Unusually for him, Davies starts his Bassoon Concerto not with slow music but with speed and brilliance: the opening is a Presto, initiated by the strings, and only at the entry of the soloist does the tempo relax to that of a real introduction. Out of this grow a big dancing Allegro. The slow movement begins and ends with a simple song, around fantastical ornamentation from the soloist. The finale is again a recitative and dance, with a slow coda. The whole work is an immense show of stamina, poetry and athleticism for the bassoon, set against an orchestra coloured by low wind (alto flute, clarinet in A, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, horns). Bassoon part with piano reduction of the orchestral score.

The bassoon is capable of a broad range of timbres and expression, and it is the lyrical, vocal quality of the instrument that Martin Gatt has always been attracted to. In both his performance and teaching, his emphasis is on the importance of what he calls â??vocalisingâ?? through the bassoon, and for him, music for the voice â?? especially art songs of the 19th and 20th centuries â?? has been a rich source of material for exploring the expressive tonal colours of the bassoon.The treasure trove of French art song from composers ranging from Claude Arrieu to Louis Vierne, not to mention the greats like Berlioz or Debussy or Ravel, has made the task of choosing which songs to include in this album a difficult one. This short work is partly based on the well-known bassoon solo from Peter and the Wolf, the musical fairy tale by Sergei Prokofiev. However, the original melody is presented in â??inversionâ??: ascending intervals become descending ones, and vice versa. The middle cantabile section is mainly situated in the higher bassoon register, thus forming a lovely contrast with the other parts. The piano accompaniment is modest and transparent, so that the bassoon is not drowned out.Dit korte werkje is deels geënt op de bekende fagotsolo uit Peter en de Wolf, het muzikale sprookje van Sergei Prokofjev. De oorspronkelijke melodie wordt echter in â??omkeringâ?? gepresenteerd: stijgende toonafstanden worden dus dalende en vice versa. Het middendeel is zangeriger en ligt vooral in het hogere register van de fagot, wat een fraai contrast vormt met de hoekdelen. De pianobegeleiding is bescheiden en transparant, zodat de fagot niet overstemd wordt.Dieses kurze Werk basiert zum Teil auf dem bekannten Fagott-Solo aus Sergei Prokofjews musikalischem Märchen Peter und der Wolf. There comes a time in life when your parents have passed on. What we are left with is the memories of their love, guidance, support, and the happy times together. Last August when my mum sadly passed away, I wrote an Elegy as part of my grieving. However, as a family we had happy times together and it seemed only right to compose a work which would celebrate this. So, I added a first and last movement to create a short concertino. Sonata for bassoon and piano is one of Swiders first works for a wind instrument. It was written most probably in the years 1953-1954, under a clear influence of neo-classicist stylistics. The only documented performance took place on 5th May 1955 in Katowice, or Stalinogrod, as such was the name of that city in those days. The first part of Sonata is written in a form of scherzando of a light and witty character, where the composer fully uses the facture and bassoons sound potential. The second part, full of meditation and cantilena, bears a particular expression of lower registers of the instrument. Part three is a traditional minuet in moderato tempo, with stylised folk elements in the middle fragment. The last part resumes the scherzo form, capped by a cadenza written by Marek Baranski, in which attempting to imitate the language of Jozef Swider's compositions that include numerous elements of a synthetic finale he included most music concepts outlined in the entire Sonata.
