A rare and beautiful chart from the Glenn Miller Orchestra, this chart was originally scored by Bill Finegan and is his iterpretation of Tschaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. The arrangement is full of tonal and dynamic contrast, with a mix of raw brass energy and muted sectional playing, with some lush scoring in all the sections and of course the famous Miller reed sound with plunger brass figures behind the reed section. The piano has a couple of solo spots, but the chart is not a piano feature. The brass ranges are not too demanding, the second alto doubles clarinet, and baritone doubles alto. As with all Miller charts, precision and sectional discipline is required.

As commissioned (and recorded) by the SWR Big Band of Stuttgart, Germany, this is an extended arrangement based on a gorgeous melody by Pat Metheny. The saxophone players double on flute (sax 1), clarinets (sax 2-4) and bass clarinet (sax 5). There is solo space for piano, tenor sax and trombone, as the chart moves from a rubato ballad, to a bossa feel, to a rock ballad feel, and back to the rubato again. This is a highly, emotionally charged piece which makes a wonderful addition to any program. Limited brass ranges. The chart also includes an interweaving of Metheny's pensive melody Tell Her You Saw Me. The CD on which this piece is recorded is Towednack, Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4.

As recorded on Libertango ! Hommage to Astor Piazzolla by the HR Big Band (Germany), this arrangement will surely lift your audiences out of their seats. It features a main soloist of your choice (originally recorded with bandoneon solo) and another solo for tenor saxophone. Various parts are included for different soloists to use. This marvelous arrangement opens with warm sounds in clarinets, muted trombones and flugelhorns behind the beautiful melody stated by the primary soloist. The setting is a medium tango, with a short, exciting swing section near the end of the chart. Once the piece moves into a strong, rock-fusion feel, there is no turning back. You and your band will love this chart. This requires clarinet doubles on the top 3 saxophone parts and bass clarinet on the baritone part. There is also a mallet part (marimba, vibes and xylophone). 5-4-4-5.

Every once in a while a melody is written that words cannot convey and only the soul understands. Master-of-melodies, Pat Metheny, did just that in his composition of Tell Her You Saw Me, and Bob Curnow magnificently transformed it into a majestic big band arrangement. A ballad throughout that slowly builds in intensity; this piece utilizes woodwind doubles and flugelhorns with a short, written-out piano solo up front. If you are looking to provide a moving ballad for your audiences, then this is it. 5-4-4-4.

A monumental piece of big band jazz. This was written for Les' fantastic Chicago band. It is an extensive work (about 12 minutes) which features trumpet (or flugelhorn) throughout in various settings and styles, based on one of the most beautiful melodies Les has ever written. There are also piano solos. Woodwind players must be good doublers and it is well worth the effort. This is certainly one of Hooper's most dynamic and interesting creations (among a great many)! As recorded on the Dorian Blue LP. 5-4-4-3.

This arrangement by Oliver Nelson is a gorgeous alto saxophone feature of Cole Porter's I Worship You. The alto player can either perform the solo part (completely written out) as originally played and recorded by Cannonball Adderley on his album Domination, or can choose to read the basic melody and improvise. There is also short solo space for piano. Clarinet doubles are required, but the ensemble writing is very playable. This is a great alto feature on a beautiful melody! 5-4-4-3.

There may not be a more beautiful ballad anywhere in jazz ensemble literature. This is an alto saxophone feature throughout and was recorded on the Full Nelson album and also included in the Verve Jazz Masters collection CD. This is a stunning piece, which has a decidedly orchestral/classical sound to it. The possibility of using the original clarinet, flute oboe, bass clarinet and celeste parts makes this a most interesting and special piece. Regular saxophone parts are also included if doubles are not available. 5-4-4-4.

Rich DeRosa, Professor of Jazz Composition at the University of North Texas, has composed a fascinating, brooding, and pensive melody of 'Mixed Emotions.' Set in a very contemporary feel with lush harmonies and reasonable brass ranges (highest note for trumpet is a written B), this flugelhorn feature also includes wonderfully written ensemble passages and will enchant your band and audiences alike. Originally recorded by the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band on their album Lab 2014, this piece requires woodwind doubles (clarinet). 5-4-4-4.

This chart is destined to become a best-seller because of its unique and exciting format ... an orchestration of Jelly Roll Morton's original recording of one of his most famous compositions. The arranger has successfully captured the spirit of the '20's with the modern big band. Scored for 5 woodwinds (incl. clarinet and 2 soprano saxes) 6 brass and 4 rhythm, this is one piece that your band and audiences will ask for again and again. 5-3-3-4.

In addition to featuring the depth of your ensemble, including woodwind doubles, lots of counterpoint, and tempo and style changes, there is also solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet. This chart is the real deal! 5-4-4-4.

Also known as Patterns For Orchestra (as recorded on the Verve jazz masters 48 CD), this is one of Nelson's very interesting charts. It has a very angular, exciting melody in a brisk swing tempo, and lots of solo space for trombone (as recorded by J.J. Johnson). The solo space could be filled by piano or any other instrument as well. The instrumentation has been converted to 5-4-4-4, a standard big band.
