In this beautiful composition, melodic fragments of the hymn tune Beecher are morphed into a series of variations, showing the melody in various moods from expressive, then quiet and soft, to bright and triumphant in the end. An Emerald Jubilee celebrates a 40th anniversary. Jan de Haan composed this colourfully orchestrated concert march to celebrate Will van der Beek’s 40th anniversary as conductor of the Deutsche Musikverein Haaren. As publisher of van der Beek’s transcriptions of classical works Jan de Haan can look back on many years of successful collaboration with the knowledge that there will be many more to come. Unusually cast in a minor key, the main theme provides an interesting contrast to the more melodic major key of the second movement. The relatively slow theme gives this march a dignified stately and subdued quality.Een veertigjarig jubileum? Dat is een smaragden jubileum! En zo ontstond de titel voor Emerald Jubilee, refererend aan het veertigjarige jubileum van Wil van der Beek als dirigent bij de Duitse muziekvereniging Haaren. Jande Haan componeerde deze kleurrijke mars. Als voormalig uitgever van de klassieke transcripties van Wil van der Beek kan Jan de Haan terugblikken op vele jaren van succesvolle samenwerking met deze componist. Aus der Moll- Tonart in f-Moll des Hauptthemas und dem melodischen mittleren Satz in Dur ergibt sich ein schöner Kontrast; das relativ langsame Thema verleiht dem Marsch seinen erhabenen und gedämpften Charakter.Pour célébrer les quarante ans de carrière (jubilé d’émeraude) de son confrère, Wil van der Beek, Jan de Haan a composé cette marche de concert l’orchestration colorée. Si, traditionnellement, les marches festives sont écrites dans une tonalité majeure, Jan de Haan s’est affranchi de cette logique pour installer son thème principal dans la tonalité de Fa mineur. Ce faisant, il obtient un charmant contraste avec le passage central mélodique, écrit dans une tonalité majeure. En choisissant un tempo relativement lent, l’œuvre prend une tournure majestueuse, parfois retenue.

The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001. Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town. There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home, but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon. The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone. The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people. However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off. Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon, a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after! Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit, however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus. Self-taught, she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet, The Dutch Brass Ensemble, The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability. Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble. Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music. The songs of Leonard Cohen are difficult to categorize. His songs are sometimes more like poems to music. ‘Hallelujah’ is probably the most widely known Cohen composition and has been covered many times, most notably by Jeff Buckley. This is a beautiful addition to the brass band repertoire and is suitable for young bands working on phrasing, intonation and musicality. De liedjes van Leonard Cohen zijn moeilijk onder één noemer te brengen. Soms zijn het eerder gedichten op muziek. ‘Hallelujah’ is misschien wel de bekendste compositie van Cohen. Het nummer is door vele artiesten gecoverd, bijvoorbeeld door Jeff Buckley, in een versie die veel mensen zullen kennen. Deze prachtige toevoeging aan het brassbandrepertoire is met name geschikt voor jonge bands die werken aan frasering, intonatie en muzikaliteit. Die Songs von Leonard Cohen sind schwer einzuordnen. Manchmal sind seine Lieder eher wie Gedichte zur Musik. Hallelujah“ ist wahrscheinlich die bekannteste Komposition von Cohen, von der es zahlreiche Coverversionen gibt. In 1989, the demonstration named the Baltic Way also known as the Baltic Chain— was held in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania by its citizens in a call for independence from the Soviet Union. On 23rd August 1989, some two million participants formed a human chain, hand-in-hand all the way from the Estonian capital of Tallinn its Latvian counterpart, Riga, through to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius - six hundred kilometres long. It became the longest human chain ever created and turned out to be the final push needed for much sought-after independence. This historic event became the source of inspiration for this composition. The introduction of thefirst movement, ‘Struggle for Independence’, is based on a nocturne for piano by the renowned Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis (1875-1911), thematic material from which has been incorporated throughout the whole composition. The melancholic beginning is followed by a powerful theme which reflects the resolve of the Baltic people. The sudden aggressive, dissonant chords and a dominant and—in rhythmic terms—contrary bass drum announce that the resistance is not going smoothly. Just for a moment, we hear the anthem of the Soviet Union in the lower brass, but this is relentlessly pushed to the background by the rest of the band playing the Lithuanian national anthem, ‘Tautiška giesm ’ (Lithuania, our homeland). The second movement, ‘Decades of Suffering’, echoes life under the Soviet Union's thumb. In the pursuit of independence, a peaceful protest is planned in which a human chain is formed across the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This ‘Chain of Freedom’ is depicted in the final movement of the work. De Baltische Weg (The Baltic Way) was een demonstratie van de bevolking van de Baltische staten die in 1989 plaatsvond als een roep om onafhankelijkheid van de Sovjet-Unie. Deze historische gebeurtenis vormde de inspiratiebron voor deze compositie. Van Vilnius via Riga naar Tallinn werd een zeshonderd kilometer lange keten van naar schatting twee miljoen mensen gevormd. Op 23 augustus 1989 gaven al die mensen elkaar de hand en werd De Baltische Weg de langste menselijke keten ooit. Het bleek de uiteindelijke opmaat tot de zo gewenste onafhankelijkheid. De inleiding van het eerste deel, ‘Struggle for Independence’, is gebaseerd op een nocturne voor piano van devooraanstaande Litouwse componist en kunstschilder Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis (1875-1911). Het thematische materiaal van deze nocturne is door de hele compositie heen verwerkt. Na het melancholische begin volgt een krachtig thema, waarmee de strijdbaarheid van de Baltische bevolking wordt uitgebeeld. De plotselinge agressieve dissonante akkoorden en een dominante en ritmisch gezien tegendraadse grote trom laten horen dat het verzet niet eenvoudig verloopt. Even klinkt het begin van het volkslied van de Sovjet-Unie in het lage koper, maar dat wordt door de rest van de band onverbiddelijk naar de achtergrond verwezen door het Litouwse nationale volkslied ‘Tautiška giesm ’ (Litouwen, ons vaderland). In deel twee, ‘Decades of Suffering’, wordt het leven onder het juk van de Sovjet-Unie verklankt. In het streven naar onafhankelijkheid worden plannen gemaakt om als vreedzaam protest tegen de onderdrukking een menselijke keten te vormen over de wegen van de Baltische staten Litouwen, Letland en Estland. Deze ‘Chain of Freedom’ wordt in het laatste deel van het werk muzikaal weergegeven. Der zweite Satz, Decades of Suffering“, spiegelt das Leben unter dem Joch der Sowjetunion wider. Für das Streben nach Unabhängigkeit war ein friedlicher Protest geplant, bei dem eine Menschenkette durch die baltischen Staaten Estland, Lettland und Litauen gebildet wurde. Diese Chain of Freedom“ wird im letzten Satz des Werkes beschrieben. Le 23 ao t 1989, quelque deux millions de personnes se tenant par la main ont formé une chaîne humaine de 600 km de long reliant les trois capitales Tallinn (Estonie), Riga (Lettonie) et Vilnius (Lituanie). Cette chaîne humaine, la plus longue ce jour, donna une impulsion décisive au rétablissement d’une indépendance vivement souhaitée. Cet événement historique est devenu source d’inspiration pour cette composition. Nous entendons momentanément l’hymne soviétique dans les cuivres graves, mais cet air est inexorablement repoussé l’arrière-plan par le reste de l’orchestre interprétant l’hymne national de Lettonie, « Tautiška giesm » (Lettonie, notre patrie). Le deuxième mouvement, « Decades of Suffering », dépeint la vie sous le joug de l’Union soviétique. la recherche de l’indépendance, une manifestation pacifique est organisée sous la forme d’une chaîne humaine traversant les trois pays baltes l ’Estonie, la Lettonie et la Lituanie. Evolution was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing brass band repertoire. The composer writes:-The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine and astrology, and in simpleterms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life. An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions: Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Evolution has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. Evolution is geschreven in opdracht van Kunstfactor voor de 4e divisie van de NBK (Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen) 2011. Het werk is opgedragen aan Jappie Dijkstra en het MUI (Muziekuitleen- en Informatiecentrum) te Arnhem, als waardering voor hun inspanningen met betrekking tot de ontwikkeling van het brassbandrepertoire.De componist schrijft:Het idee voor Evolution kwam in mij op toen ik een artikel las over een tak binnen de Chinese filosofie waarvan de naam wordt afgekort tot Wu Xing - waar geen exacte vertaling voor is, maar wat zoveel betekent als vijf elementen, vijf fasen of vijf stadia van verandering. Het gaat om een wezenlijk onderdeel van allecomponenten binnen het Chinese gedachtegoed, inclusief de wetenschap, filosofie, geneeskunst en astrologie. Simpel gezegd draait het om het creëren van diverse cyclische verbanden tussen vijf elementen die in ieders leven een rol spelen. Een voorbeeld: Aarde - Metaal - Water - Hout - Vuur - (Aarde) enz. In deze cyclus bevat aarde metaal; metaal verandert in vloeistof (water) door verhitting; water helpt bomen te groeien; hout dat brandt creëert vuur; en vuur produceert as (aarde). Zo blijft de cyclus voortgaan. Zelf was ik vooral ge nteresseerd in de cyclus van emoties: Meditatie - Verdriet - Angst - Boosheid - Vreugde - (Meditatie) enz. De gedachte aan dit cyclische principe leverde een reis door een muzikale wereld van emoties op. Evolution bestaat uit vijf delen die betrekking hebben op de emotionele cyclus. Ik heb geprobeerd de muziek op natuurlijke wijze te laten ontstaan, met zo weinig mogelijk herhalingen. Elk deel vloeit voort uit de muzikale elementen uit het slot van het voorgaande deel. Het openingsmateriaal komt, in getransformeerde gedaante, terug aan het einde van het werk, waarmee de cyclus wordt afgerond. Evolution wurde von Kunstfactor für die vierte Abteilung der Holländischen Nationalen Brass-Band-Meisterschaft (NBK) 2011 in Auftrag gegeben. Die Widmung gilt Jappie Dijkstra und dem Musik-Informationszentrum (MUI) in Arnhem (Holland), in Anerkennung ihrer außerordentlichen Bemühungen um die Entwicklung des Brass-Band-Repertoires.Der Komponist über sein Werk:Die Idee zu diesem Stück kam mir beim Lesen eines Artikels über eine Richtung der chinesischen Philosophie, die abgekürzt Wu Xing heißt, was nicht wörtlich übersetzt werden kann, aber so viel wie fünf Elemente, fünf Phasen oder fünf Stadien der Verwandlung bedeutet. In diesem Zyklus enthält die Erde Metall, das sich bei Erhitzung verflüssigt (Wasser); Wasser lässt Bäume wachsen, deren Holz verbrennt (Feuer) und zu Asche wird (Erde), womit der Kreislauf von neuem beginnt.Mich interessierte besonders der Kreislauf von Gefühlen: Meditation - Trauer - Angst - Ärger - Freude - (Meditation) usw. Folglich besteht Evolution aus fünf gleichen Abschnitten, die diesen Kreislauf der Gefühle grob nachzeichnen. Ich habe versucht, die Musik organisch wachsen zu lassen mit möglichst wenig Wiederholungen. Jeder Satz entwickelt sich aus den Elementen vom Ende des vorhergehenden Satzes und das Material der Eröffnung vollendet am Schluss des Werkes den Kreis. Evolution se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. Chaque mouvement s’ouvre partir des éléments musicaux qui parachèvent le mouvement précédent, tandis que le motif premier réapparaît.

A Classical Christmas (“Noël classiqueâ€) rassemble des œuvres de trois grands compositeurs français du XIXe siècle.Le premier mouvement nous fait découvrir César Franck (1822-1890), grand organiste et brillant compositeur, qui a donné une réelle valeur artistique certains chants de Noël français traditionnels. Ce mouvement apaisé, au charme captivant, offre de nombreuses possibilités en termes de nuances et d’expression. La percussion intervient mais ne tient qu’un rôle modeste.Le thème de l’oratorio L’Enfance du Christ d’Hector Berlioz(1803-1869) est au centre du deuxième mouvement. Le thème est conçu comme une ode la sainte Famille. Ce deuxième mouvement, expressif et tendre, possède un caractère intimiste.Le thème du troisième et dernier mouvement est extrait de l’Oratorio de Noël de Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921). Il s’agit d’une page bien connue, le célèbre chœur final Tollite Hostias. La puissance et l’intensité donnent ce finale le ton festif qui caractérise Noël.

Mark Taylor wrote the trumpet feature Scream Machine for a vinyl album by the Army Blues Jazz Ensemble in 1985. It was later published in a slightly simpler version called Brass Machine. This brass band arrangement by Philip Sparke has been arranged directly from the published jazz ensemble score and features soprano cornet and four solo cornets. Mark Taylor componeerde het stuk Scream Machine, waarin de trompet de hoofdrol speelt, voor een vinylalbum dat in 1985 werd uitgebracht door het Army Blues Jazz Ensemble. Het werd later uitgegeven in een iets eenvoudiger versie, met als titel Brass Machine. Dit arrangement voor brassband is een rechtstreekse bewerking van de partituur voor het jazzensemble. Het is geschreven voor sopraancornet en vier solocornetten. Mark Taylor schrieb das Trompetenstück Scream Machine 1985 für das gleichnamige Vinylalbum des Army Blues Jazz Ensemble. Es erschien später in einer etwas leichteren Version unter dem Titel Brass Machine. Dieses Arrangement für Brass Band von Philip Sparke wurde auf der Grundlage der veröffentlichten Version für Jazz Ensemble erstellt und verwendet ein Sopran-Kornett und vier Solo-Kornette. It is true that tastes differ. Coffee has known a long history : it has been drunk since the 17th century. On one hand people drink coffee for relaxation, on the other hand it is drunk to ward off tiredness or sleepiness. ‘Strong Coffee’ composed by Ron Gilmore works both ways. There will be people who will be able to relax during ‘Strong Coffee’, whereas others will experience it as a real boost. Is it a bit too strong after all, such a funky Soul Beat? Then adding a little milk might help. As said before, tastes differ!Zoveel mensen zoveel smaken. Koffie kent een lange geschiedenis. Al sinds de 17e eeuw wordt deze drank genuttigd. Enerzijds wordt koffie gedronken voor de gezelligheid, anderzijds wordt koffie gebruikt als middel om vermoeidheidof slaperigheid weg te drinken. Met ‘Strong Coffee’ van Ron Gilmore kunt u beide kanten op. Er zullen mensen zijn die bij Strong Coffee even bijkomen, voor de ander is het een echte opkikker. Is het toch een beetje te sterk,zo’n lekkere Soul Beat? Een scheutje melk helpt. Smaken verschillen nu eenmaal.

The 'Admiral Spirit' is the pride of the Navy. The ship is at sea, there is no wind, the sun is shining. The crew are busy piloting the ship into port in prime condition. The admiral himself will inspect the vessel. The first movement (Allegro Con Spirito) gives musical expression to the majestic ship and its toiling crew. In the second movement (Andante), the ship sails into port. It has been polished and technically everything is in order. The admiral will be proud when he inspects the ship. Third movement (Allegro Molto): the captain and his crew are nervous (modulations) while working at the 'finishing touch'. The Navy Band is ready to receive the admiral !. Hemay be proud of his flagship. De bemanning van het marineschip Admiral Spirit is druk bezig om het schip in optimale conditie de haven binnen te loodsen, de admiraal gaat namelijk het schip zelf inspecteren. In het eerste deel (Allegro con spirito) horen weeen verklanking van het majestueuze schip en de zwoegende bemanning. Hoe beeldend zijn de emmertjes water welke overboord gaan (trombones). In het tweede deel (Andante) vaart het schip de haven binnen. Het schip is gepoetsten technisch is alles in orde. Derde deel (Allegro molto): De kapitein en zijn bemanning zijn nerveus (modulaties) en er wordt aan de finishing touch gewerkt. De Navy Band staat klaar om de admiraal te ontvangen! De admiraal kantrots zijn op het vlaggenschip. Een schitterend speelwerk voor de lagere afdelingen! Dit werk is opgenomen in het Klein repertorium, brassband - 5e divisie.

Gek kun je worden van een metronoom, vooral als het tempo (nog) wat aan de hoge kant ligt. Maar wat te denken van een metronoom die zelf van slag raakt? In dit kostelijke werkje probeert het apparaat vanaf maat 1 het orkestop het verkeerde been te zetten en dat lukt bijna. Componist Peter Martin maakte er een charmant stukje muziek maar of het goed afloopt? Gebruik uw fantasie en creativiteit bij de Manic Metronome!
