The Yiddish word ‘Klezmer’ has been derived from the Old Hebrew words ‘Kley’ (tool, instrument) and ‘Zemer’ (song, singing, making music).Klezmer is the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe.Yiddish musicians (Klezmorim) were regularly invited to come and play at Yiddish weddings as well as several other Jewish celebrations and festive occasions. Despite its close connection with traditional Eastern European folk music, Klezmer music has succeeded in preserving its distinctive Jewish character. ‘Klezmer Discovery’ is a voyage of discovery through the richly varied music of the Jewish people from Eastern Europe.The introduction consists of a number of motives from differenttraditional melodies (a Mitzve Tenzel and L’cha Dodi), followed by a melody in 3/8th time (Kandel’s Hora). This dance melody originally came from Bessarabia (present-day Moldavia) and was taken along to America by Jewish musicians round 1900. Subsequently, ‘Der Terk in Amerika’, a composition by famous clarinet player Naftule Brandwein can be heard. A number of fast, cheerful dance melodies (bulgars) form the finale of ‘Klezmer Discovery’ (Lebedyk un Freylekh, Lomir sich iberbetn and Sherele).

Het Jiddische woord ‘Klezmer’ stamt af van de oud-Hebreeuwse woorden ‘Kley’ (werktuig, instrument) en ‘Zemer’ (lied, gezang, musiceren).
Klezmer is de traditionele muziek van de Joden in Oost-Europa.
Jiddische muzikanten (Klezmorim)werden geregeld uitgenodigd om te komen spelen op traditionele Jiddische bruiloften en diverse andere Joodse feesten en gelegenheden.
Ondanks de sterke verwantschap met de traditionele volksmuziek uit Oost-Europa, heeftde klezmermuziek een duidelijk Joods karakter weten te behouden.

‘Klezmer Discovery’ is een ontdekkingstocht door de rijk gevarieerde muziek van de Joden in Oost-Europa.
De inleiding bestaat uit een aantal motieven vanverschillende traditionele melodieën (a Mitzve Tenzel en L’cha Dodi).
Daarna volgt een melodie in 3/8e maat (Kandel’s Hora). Deze dansmelodie komt oorspronkelijk uit Bessarabië (het tegenwoordige Moldavië) en is door Joodsemuzikanten zo rond 1900 meegenomen naar Amerika.
Vervolgens klinkt ‘Der Terk in Amerika’, een compositie van de befaamde klarinetist Naftule Brandwein.
Een aantal snelle, vrolijke dansmelodieën (bulgars) vormen het slot van‘Klezmer Discovery’ (Lebedyk un Freylekh, Lomir sich iberbetn en Sherele).

Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms.
Obviously, the percussion section has a conspicious role to play, but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement.
The introduction depicts the awakening of nature, and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa.
The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana.
In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblanceto a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes.

Carl Wittrock's brede interesse voor de wereldmuziek resulteerde in dit op originele Afrikaanse ritmes gebaseerde concertwerk.
Het slagwerk speelt uiteraard een opvallende rol, maar ook het orkest kan zich op een heerlijke manieruitleven.
De inleiding schildert het ontwaken van de natuur, welke overgaat in een dans. Het motief van deze dans (Apollo) is afkomstig uit Gambia. De begeleiding bestaat uit een ostinaatpatroon van de balafon-meester MaudoSusa.
De basis van het rustige middendeel is gelegen in het ritme van de Gigbo, een traditionele dans uit Ghana.
Het laatste deel (met enige gelijkenis met The Lion King) maakt gebruik van het zogenaamde Kono ritme.
Hetwerk komt het best tot zijn recht als er gebruik wordt gemaakt van djembes.

Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrastingtraditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

De wortels van de klezmerstijl liggen in wereldlijke melodieën, populaire dansen, het joodse ‘hazanut’ (cantorijmuziek) en de ‘nigunim’, de melodieën die worden gereciteerd door de ‘hasidim’ (orthodoxe joden). De term werd in de loopder tijden synoniem aan instrumentale muziek, waarin met name de viool en klarinet de hoofdrol spelen. Voor A Klezmer Karnival zijn drie traditionele melodieën gebruikt: Choson kale mazel tov, een bruiloftsdans,Freylekh, een joodse kringdans, en Sherele, een Duitse herdersdans.

Philip Sparke verarbeitete in seinem neuen Werk drei unterschiedliche traditionelle Klezmermelodien: einen Hochzeitstanz mit Glückwünschen für Braut und Bräutigam, einen Rundtanz und einen so genannten Scherentanz. Daraus entstand A Klezmer Karnival, das die dem Klezmer eigene Mischung aus Fröhlichkeit und Melancholie ausgezeichnet wiedergibt. Ein ebenso abwechslungsreiches wie stimmungsvolles Konzertwerk, mit dem Ihre Brass Band überzeugen wird!

Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages.‘Klezmer’ is a Yiddish term combining the Hebrew words ‘kley’ (instrument) and ‘zemer’ (song) and the roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish ‘hazanut’ (cantorial music) and also the ‘nigunim’, the wordless melodies intoned by the ‘Hasidim’ (orthodox Jews).Since the 16th century, lyrics hadbeen added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. The composer:
1st movement: Reflections by the Fjord.
Overlooking one of the mighty fjords of Norway, my mind and thoughts are with an old religious Norwegian folk-tune, with words by the famous parson Peter Dass.
The majestic fanfare-likeopening reflects the power of God our Father, the choral itself heard for the first time on flugelhorn. The choral is repeated a few times, separated only by some short variations. The movement ends in thriumph, with fanfares and the choral broughttogether.
2nd movement: Reflections in the Old Church.
In this movement my associations of a summer day, finding myself alone in an old deserted stone church. From the old walls I hear folk songs, perhaps like the ones sung in the church bypoor fishermen and farmers in days gone by. Suddenly the light from the sun breakes through the small circular window above the altar, and a lovely melody is heard, before the original figures take us to the end of the movement.
3rd movement:Festive Reflections.
Any festive occasion can be reflected in this movement. from the bonfire at midsummer-night to the children celebrating the return of the sun in the northern part of Norway. from the traditional sleigh-riding at Christmas tothe Celebrations of the National Day on the 17th of May each year.

1e deel: Reflections by the Fjord.
Uitkijkend over een van de machtige fjorden van Noorwegen, zijn mijn geest en gedachten bij een oude, religieuze Noorse folk-melodie, met woorden van de beroemde dominee Peter Dass.
Demajestueuze fanfare-achtige opening weerspiegelt de kracht van God, onze Vader. Het koraal wordt als eerste gespeeld door de bugel.
Het koraal wordt een aantal keren herhaald, slechts onderbroken door enkele korte variaties. Het deel eindigttriomfantelijk, met fanfares en het koraal bij elkaar gebracht.
2e deel: Reflections in the Old Church.
In dit deel mijn denkbeelden van een zomerse dag, ik zie mezelf staan in een oude, verlaten stenen kerk. Weerkaatsend tussen de oudemuren hoor ik volksliederen, misschien wel zoals die in de kerk gezongen werden door arme vissers en boeren in vervlogen tijden.
Plotseling breekt het licht van de zon door de kleine ronde ramen boven het altaar, en ik hoor een prachtigemelodie, voordat het oorspronkelijke thema ons naar het einde van het deel voert.
3e deel: Festive Reflections.
Feestelijke gelegenheden kunnen worden weerspiegeld in dit deel, van het nachtelijk midzomer vuur tot de kinderen die deterugkeer van de zon in het noordelijk deel van Noorwegen vieren, van het traditionele sleerijden met Kerstmis tot aan de viering van de Nationale Dag op 17 mei van elk jaar toe.

The composer: A short concert-opener where I use Norwegian folk-tunes.
I wanted to create a short musical picture of the Vikings running from the seashore towards some people they wanted to fight down.
They used to drink something made of mushrooms and became very wild.
They didn¬?t feel any pain, they didn¬?t feel any fear.
They where called the Berserkings! Ze voelden geen pijn en kenden geen angst... de Vikingen! Na het drinken van een speciale drank van paddenstoelen konden ze de hele wereld aan. Fraaie Noorse volksmelodieën gebruikend, schetst Aagaard-Nilsen het hero?sche beeld van aanvallende Vikingen. Klaar om de kust te bestormen...
