Maria durch ein? Dornwald ging (Blest Mary Wanders Through the Thorn) is a traditional German Christmas song. The earliest known version is recorded in the Andernacher Gesangbuch from 1608. Halfway through the nineteenth century it was a regional pilgrimage song in Thüringen, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, the current version was registered in the songbook Zupfgeigenhansl of the German youth movement. Michael Bilkes used the well-known melody to create this attractive arrangement for concert band.Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging (Maria door een doornwoud trad) is een traditioneel Duits kerstlied. Exultation is a short and energetic concert opener that is similar to a palindrome. A fanfare opens the work, juxtaposing 3/4 and 6/8, reminiscent of Latin-American music. The main theme is first heard on the euphonium, horns and saxophones which is very bluesy. The contrasting second theme is short and spikey and played by the bass instruments of the band. A lyric melody emerges as the rest of the orchestra joins in. The second theme reappears which leads back to the ‘blues’ melody, which leads back to the opening fanfare. Palindromic!Exultation (Jubel) ist ein kurzes, rhythmisch und stilistisch abwechslungsreiches Eröffnungsstück, das in seiner Form einem Palindrom ähnelt: Nach einer Fanfare in einem fast lateinamerikanischen Stil erscheint ein bluesiges“ Hauptthema, das nach einer kurzen Ãœberleitung zu einem zweiten Staccato-Thema führt. Best playability and musical spirit - this is what characterizes the music of Bertold Hummel who died in 2002, and why his music must be part of the repertoire of any amateur and semi-professional orchestra. The 'Oregon Symphony' occupies a special position in his oeuvre: it was written by Hummel for the typically American symphonic wind bands, requiring almost 100 musicians, including 15 clarinets in three groups of five alone, as well as four piccolos and six flutes, bass clarinet, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, horns, tubas and the typically American sousaphone, and five percussionists. There are just over twenty secular cantatas in Bach's prolific output, which include The Coffee Cantata (No 211), The Wedding Cantata (No 202), Phoebus and Pan (No 201) and the Hunt Cantata (No 208) which contains the famous aria Sheep May Safely Graze. Written for four vocal soloists it was originally scored for a relatively large orchestra (including flutes (recorders), oboes and horns) and mixed choir. Although secular in character, the words describe how well a faithful shepherd keeps watch over his flock and hence has obvious allusions to the teachings of the Christian church. Rihards Dubra (born Latvia, 1964) wrote his Symphony No. 2 in 2014. It is a large-scale work, over 30 minutes long, in three movements (titled 'Visio', 'Cantus', 'Et vidi...'), for large orchestra comprising triple wind and brass, percussion and harp.
Speaking of symphonic writing, the composer says: 'I don't think a symphony should speak about small, everyday things and issues; it should speak of global, fundamental and substantial things. Only then does it justify the name 'symphony'. It must be something serious.'
