This work was commissioned by the Miyazaki Prefectural Police Band from Kyushu, Japan, and was premièred in 2017. Bandmaster Sano is an elder alumni of Musashino Academia Musicae, Toyko, where Satoshi Yagisawa also studied. He asked Yagisawa to write a brilliant one-minute fanfare that could be played as an opening piece for any concert. It will be perfect for yours!

Dit werk is geschreven in opdracht van de Miyazaki Prefectural Police Band uit Miyazaki, gelegen op het Japanse eiland Kyushu. Sano, de muzikaal leider van het orkest, is afgestudeerd aan de Musashino Academia Musicae, waar ook Satoshi Yagisawa studeerde. Questo lavoro, commissionato dalla Banda della Polizia della Prefettura di Miyazaki, è stato eseguito per la prima volta nel 2017. The ultimate full score medley of beautiful melodies from the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke (1997, dir. Hayao Miyazaki), arranged for concert band in the series: New Sounds in Brass (NSB). Arranger Takashi Hoshide says, I have selected beautiful melodies from the soundtrack of 'Princess Mononoke' (1997, directed by Hayao Miyazaki) and arranged them into a medley. What can be said about these songs as a whole is that they combine a grand continental scale with the delicacy that reflects Japanese emotions. Since there are no upbeat songs in this selection, I had to work hard on the arrangement, but this allowed for creating contrasts and transitions between each scene in the performance. 'Ashitaka Sekki (English title: The Legend of Ashitaka)' - 'Sekki' means a story that is not recorded but passed down orally. In this anime, this can be considered a sub-main theme. The song starts with a feeling that the story is about to begin and, once the theme kicks in, aim for a grand performance to convey its scale. 'Encounter' - This is the music that plays during the scene where the protagonist Ashitaka meets San. Interestingly, the motif of the main theme 'Princess Mononoke' is used in this melody. Here, let's pursue the shifts in the timbre of individual phrases, creating a beautiful and aesthetic soundscape. 'Princess Mononoke' - This is the main title of the anime. The melody line is carried by horns and trumpets.

Little Tokyo Suite is a work in three movements for wind ensemble, with a flexible 10-part orchestration suitable for concert band or fanfare band. It portrays the “Japantowns” established by Japanese emigrants around the world. They are often called “Little Tokyo”, in reference to the capital of Japan. The three movements each focus on a region with such a Japanese community. This suite is dedicated to the concert band of the conservatory of the 12th arrondissement of Paris, whose conductor is a lover of Japanese culture, and to Mochizuki Junior High School, Saku City (Nagano, Japan). They premiered this work, 10,000 km away from each other, in 2022.

Evolution was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing brass band repertoire. The composer writes:-The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine and astrology, and in simpleterms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life. An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions: Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Evolution has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle.

Het openingsmateriaal komt, in getransformeerde gedaante, terug aan het einde van het werk, waarmee de cyclus wordt afgerond.

Dieses Prinzip nimmt eine zentrale Positionim gesamten chinesischen Gedankengut ein, sei es in der Wissenschaft, Medizin oder Astrologie. Einfach ausgedruckt, werden damit in allen Lebensbereichen verschiedene zyklische Beziehungen zwischen funf Elementen hergestellt.Zum Beispiel: Erde - Metall - Wasser - Holz - Feuer - (Erde) - usw. In diesem Zyklus enthalt die Erde Metall, das sich bei Erhitzung verflussigt (Wasser); Wasser lasst Baume wachsen, deren Holz verbrennt (Feuer) und zu Asche wird (Erde), womit der Kreislauf von neuem beginnt.Mich interessierte besonders der Kreislauf von Gefuhlen: Meditation - Trauer - Angst - Arger - Freude - (Meditation) usw. Ich dachte mir, dass dieser Kreislauf eine wirkungsvolle emotionale Reise durch ein Musikstuck darstellen konnte. Folglich besteht Evolution aus funf gleichen Abschnitten, die diesen Kreislauf der Gefuhle grob nachzeichnen. Ich habe versucht, die Musik organisch wachsen zu lassen mit moglichst wenig Wiederholungen. Jeder Satz entwickelt sich aus den Elementen vom Ende des vorhergehenden Satzes und das Material der Eroffnung vollendet am Schluss des Werkes den Kreis.

Cette oeuvre est dediee a Jappie Dijkstra et au Music Information Centre (MUI) d'Arnhem, aux Pays-Bas, en hommage a leur role exceptionnel dans le developpement du repertoire pour Brass Band. Evolution se compose donc de cinq parties egales qui refletent assez librement ce cycle des emotions. J'ai essaye de faire en sorte que la musique se developpe de maniere fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de repetitions. Chaque mouvement s'ouvre a partir des elements musicaux qui parachevent le mouvement precedent, tandis que le motif premier reapparait.

The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the ‘Tiroler Landeshymne’ (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

In diesem Zyklus enthält die Erde Metall, das sich bei Erhitzung verflüssigt (Wasser); Wasser lässt Bäume wachsen, deren Holz verbrennt (Feuer)und zu Asche wird (Erde), womit der Kreislauf von neuem beginnt.Mich interessierte besonders der Kreislauf von Gefühlen:Meditation - Trauer - Angst - Ärger - Freude - (Meditation) usw.Ich dachte mir, dass dieser Kreislauf eine wirkungsvolleemotionale Reise“ durch ein Musikstück darstellen könnte. Folglich besteht Five States of Change aus fünf gleichen Abschnitten, die diesen Kreislauf der Gefühle grob nachzeichnen. Ich habe versucht, die Musik organischwachsen zu lassen mit möglichst wenig Wiederholungen. Five States of Change est une commande de l’institut Kunstfactor pour la 4e division des Championnats néerlandais de Brass Band en 2011. Cette œuvre est dédiée Jappie Dijkstra et au Music Information Centre (MUI) d’Arnhem, aux Pays-Bas, en hommage leur rôle exceptionnel dans le développement du répertoire pour Orchestre Vent.Le compositeur écrit : L’idée de cette composition m’est venue alors que je lisais un article sur un aspect de la philosophie chinoise, connu sous l’abréviation de Wu Xing*, qu’il est impossible de traduire littéralement mais qui peut signifier, par exemple, cinq éléments, cinq phases ou cinq états de changement. Toutechose dans l’univers est le fruit d’un cycle de création (ou d’engendrement) et de domination (ou contrôle). Ce concept est essentiel tous les éléments de la pensée chinoise, y compris les sciences, la philosophie, la médecine et l’astrologie et, en termes simples, il représente les multiples rapports cycliques qui existent entre cinq éléments liés l’univers et toute chose dans l’univers, donc l’homme.Évoquons le cycle de la création : Terre - Métal - Eau - Bois - Feu - (Terre) etc. La terre contient des minéraux, source de métal, le métal peut être fondu et se liquéfie, l’eau arrose et fait pousser les arbres, le bois br le et produit du feu, le feu produit des cendres, une sorte de terre, dans une dynamique cyclique perpétuelle.Parmi tous les cycles existants, celui des émotions éveilla particulièrement mon intérêt : Méditation - Chagrin - Peur - Colère - Joie - (Méditation) etc. et je me suis dit que ce principe cyclique pourrait être la source d’un puissant et émotionnel voyage musical. Five States of Change se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. L’idea di comporre questo brano è venuta a Philip Sparke leggendo un articolo sulla filosofi a cinese che si basa su cicli di cinque elementi, fasi e stadi di cambiamento. A Sparke interessavano in particolare il flusso dei sentimenti come la meditazione, il lutto, la paura, la rabbia e la gioia. A partire da questi elementi ha composto un impressionante “viaggio” musicale suddiviso in cinque sezioni, tematicamente intrecciate tra loro, quasi a voler formare un cerchio.

In German mythology, Donar is the God of Thunder, and in the area around Heek, ‘Thunder Mountain’ is a household name. The work begins with a stately opening, followed by a beautiful trio melody with rhythmical and energetic sections. This is a march that features and showcases a range of musical aspects. It is perfect as an opener or to create variety during a concert.

Deze nobele concertmars werd geschreven in opdracht van de Duitse Musikverein Heek, ter gelegenheid van het 125-jarig bestaan van deze vereniging in 2017. De première vond onder leiding van de componist op 2 september plaats in de gemeente Heek. Donar is de dondergod uit de Germaanse mythologie en er is een specifieke reden voor de keuze van deze naam: in de regio rond Heek is de ‘Donderberg’ een begrip, zodat deze titel zeer toepasselijk is. Het lage register komt een paar keer duidelijk op de voorgrond om de donder en bliksem weer te geven. Het werk begint echter met een plechtstatige ‘entree’ een godheid waardig! De triomelodie daarentegen is naar de loffelijkegewoonte van Jan Van der Roost zangerig en melodieus. Kortom: dit is een mars die diverse muzikale aspecten bevat en etaleert.

In 1906 Bohemian violinist and composer Frantisek Drdla (1868-1944) composed the delightfully charming piece entitled Souvenir. This piece for violin and piano is one of the most popular compositions by Drdla. Wil van der Beek has produced this arrangement for Flute and Concert Band which remains faithful to the original version. The texture of the work allows the soloist to show off both their technical and musical talents and its charm makes it an ideal encore item at any concert.

Commitment to Courage is een eerbetoon aan brandweerlieden overal ter wereld. Dagelijks stellen zij hun leven in de waagschaal voor het welzijn van hun medemens. Het eerste deel Oath (eed) beschrijft hoe de brandweermoedig het vuur bestrijdt om mensen te redden. Het tweede deel Grief (verdriet) is een requiem voor de slachtoffers. Het derde deel Resolutions spreekt een belofte uit: ook in de toekomst zal de brandweer telkens haaropdracht vervullen.

Commitment to Courage ist eine Hommage an die Arbeit der Feuerwehrleute auf der ganzen Welt, die täglich ihr Leben für die Sicherheit der Bevölkerung riskieren. Der erste Satz Oath (Eid) beschreibt, wie die Feuerwehr mutig das Feuer bekämpft, um Zivilisten zu retten. Der zweite Satz Grief (Trauer) ist ein Requiem für die Opfer. Der dritte Satz ist mit Resolutions (Vorsätze) überschrieben: Auch in Zukunft wird die Feuerwehr ihre Mission erfüllen, damit alle Menschen in Sicherheit leben können.

Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865, after his officer’s education, he joined the guard’s regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers, including Balakirev, Cui, Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a “classical style” of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris, who with the support of the people, declared himself Tsar, but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Tohru Takahashi has usedthe beautiful musical themes of this opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - a captivating work for concert band.

Moussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov - gebaseerd op het gelijknamige drama van Aleksandr Pushkin (waarin Boris Godunov zichzelf met steun van het volk uitroept tot tsaar, maar in deze rol compleet tekortschiet) - werd populairin de bewerking die Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896 maakte. De oorspronkelijke partituur van Moussorgsky staat echter vol originele vondsten en vooruitstrevende harmonische, melodische en instrumentale details. Tohru Takahashi gebruiktede prachtige muzikale thematiek van deze opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - een boeiend werk voor harmonieorkest.

Sein Meisterwerk, die Oper Boris Godunow, schrieb Mussorgski auf der Grundlage des gleichnamigen Dramas von Alexander Puschkin.
