These are fifteen short, but intense works by Leos Janacek. This music is indeed a great gift to the Euphonium solo literature by Mr. Sauer.

Originally for solo piano, the Fifteen Moravian Folksongs are remarkable for their musicality as well as their brevity - the only notated, repeated passage in the entire work is in Number 5. Because Janacek included the text in his piano score (with no indication that it should be sung), and the fact that there are, in many cases, indications that the text is only a first verse, I have included some additional repeats.

--Gabriel Faure's Opus 7 is a grouping of three songs written between 1870 and 1878 and then published together almost 20 years later.

The songs are:
--Apres une reve (After a Dream) - Faure's most famous song, text by Romain Bussine
--Hymne - also an ethereal love song, text by Charles Baudelaire
--Barcarolle - a flowing song in 6/8 time from a poem by Marc Monnier

--Mr. Sauer has beautifully arranged these songs for advanced performers and provided English translations of the lyrics for better understanding of the spirit of each song.

Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel wrote over 460 works, mostly for solo piano and voice (lieder). She set over 34 songs to poems by Goethe, who was her favorite poet. Her songs are very expressive and are in a similar style as Schubert. The Goethe Lieder is a collection of four songs and is just right for a young performer at the intermediate level, however even a mature artist will enjoy the beautiful music of this talented composer.

The Chants du Rhin (Songs of the Rhine), a cycle of six pieces, based on poems by Joseph Mery, were written in 1865, and Bizet performed two of them on 16 April 1866 at a soiree of the Beaujolais Philharmonic Society. The songs are grouped symmetrically around La bohemienne as the central piece, framed by two meditatively yearning pieces (in E and D flat major) and two vividly exuberant ones (similarly in E and D flat major), with L'aurore serving as an introduction.

In this cycle Bizet takes up the theme of the gypsy girl which had already entered European music in the operas The Bohemian Girl by the Irish composer Michael William Balfe and Verdi's Il trovatore, as well as in Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano. Bizet will return to it one year later in La jolie fille de Perth and ten years later in Carmen. The fourth piece Les confidences shows similarities in tonality, structure and motifs to the middle part of the third movement of Chopin's Sonata in B minor.

This version includes parts in B-flat treble clef as well as bass clef.

British composer Frank Bridge is mainly remembered for his beautiful chamber music. The Four Pieces from 1912 are originally for Violin and Piano and are titled:
1. Meditation
2. Spring Song
3. Lullaby
4. Country Dance
Mr. Sauer has done a beautiful job scoring these works for Euphonium. There is a wonderful simplicity to Bridge's music, a simplicity that was lost forever just two years later at the beginning of the Great War, WW I. Bridge's most famous composition student was Benjamin Britten, who wrote one of his greatest works as an homage to Bridge.

Beau Soir (Beautiful Evening) is a French song written by Claude Debussy in the Impressionist style. The work has been arranged for many instruments. This version for Trombone (or Euphonium) and Piano by Gordon Cherry is in the original key and in bass clef. The music is subtle and full of beautiful colors, giving an impression of peace, warm breezes, rose-colored sunsets and fields of wheat. This music is appropriate for intermediate level performers and is about 3 minutes in length.

The Four Pieces, Op. 70 were written for Cello and Piano in Berlin, 1896. The four movements are titled:

Aria, Finnish, Scottish and Swedish

1. Aria is an Adagio in A minor reminiscent of the Kol Nidre
2. Finnish is a brooding lyrical Andante in G Minor
3. Scottish is a proud song in B major with dotted rhythms
4. Swedish, an unruly Allegro dance in A-B-A form in A minor

For advanced performers, this work of about 12 minutes in length has been superbly arranged by Ralph Sauer.

Le Rossignol or the Nightingale is originally a vocalise for Soprano solo from Saint-Saen's incidental orchestral music for the play, Parysatis written in 1902. This 4 minute work is all about mood. For this arrangement, Mr. Sauer transposes into the key of C, which lays perfectly for all of the bird-like calls that are in phrases which are slurred. The music has a lot of ad lib. tempo sections which gives the performer plenty of time to create that magic call of the Nightingale. Early writers thought it was the female that sang, but in fact it is the male. The Nightingale usually sings at night or just before dawn when other birds are silent and has a strong spontaneous song with an impressive range of trills and whistles.
