Again and again, there happen to be possibilities to bring early and previously unpublished music by B. A. Zimmermann to light - as is the case with this 'Song of Abelone' on a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke which Zimmermann set to music in 1939. The recording of all songs of the composer is now followed by a printed edition - an interesting insight into the early 'composition workshop' of Zimmermann.

'I have again composed so much that sometimes it seems to me altogether uncanny. Oh, I cannot help it, I would like to sing myself to death like a nightingale.' 138 of his roughly 250 songs were written in the 'lieder year' 1840. This was the year when the long years of quarrelling about his marriage to Clara Wieck finally came to a happy end by court order. But even the following years turned out to be productive with regards to the composition of lieder. The current edition contains the lieder that form part of Schumann's 'late work' or were published rather late. It is based on the recently published Vol. VI/6 (RSA 1043-10) of the Robert Schumann Complete Edition.

In 'Kinderfreuden' Enjott Schneider perfectly manages to set the five - partly absurdly funny - poems by Wilhelm Busch to music. The texts of 'Die Tute', 'Verfruht', 'Kurz und grob', 'Selbstgefallig' and 'Motto' virtually invite the composer to open his bag of tricks. These little pieces will certainly give every singer and his or her accompanist on the piano great pleasure.Schneider studied music and German studies and has been professor of music theory (meanwhile of film composition) in Munich since 1979. His extensive activities as composer, performer, music writer and lecturer have made him a versatile musician whose compositional oeuvre ranges from 'classic' avant-garde to pop music.

Poulenc's five songs, Poems of Ronsard were composed in 1925 during the post-war euphoria. The cycle is essential to aspiring, advanced vocalists of the French art song. Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was a highly prolific composer, and remains popular to this day. Poems of Ronsard was composed towards the beginning of the composer's career, based on poems by prolific French poet, Pierre de Ronsard. Poems of Ronsard is made up of five songs which alternatebetween lively and slow tempos - 1) Attributes, 2) The Tomb, 3) Ballet, 4) I only have the Bones, and 5) On his page. For many, the title will awaken memories of the demonstrations against the clearance of the Flörsheim Forest to allow for a new runway at the Frankfurt Airport. Both the poem, which extends beyond this local incident to remind us of the seriousness of our global situation, and the music join together to form an expressive, universally valid call for the conservation of our core values, our future together: “Die Erde jedoch wird sich wehren. Sie wird uns, am Ende, nichts mehr geben als den Staub, in dem wir aufgehn.†(The earth, however, will resist. She will, in the end, not give us any more than dust, into which we will submerge.) It is up to us, to prevent the situation from advancing so far: “Wir, die wir zu ihren Schülern wurden, sollten die Lehre der Bäume verbreiten.†(We, the students, should spread the teachings of the trees.â€
