The plot of Elgar's King Olaf cantata has been criticized for it lack of cohesion, but the musical settings contain power, majesty, stirring melodies, joyous lyricism and a finale of immense proportion and emotional effect. As a lesser work of a great composer, it certainly bears study. As a work on its own, King Olaf rewards performers and listeners with superb moments. A final a capella Chorus, As Torrents In Summer, is frequently performed on its own.Scenes from the Saga of King Olaf is widely considered to be the best of Elgar's pre-Enigma compositions. He was commissioned to write this work for the North Staffordshire Music Festival in 1896, and he chose to adaptsections of Longfellow's Tales of a Wayside Inn with the assistance of his neighbour, the translator H A Acworth. Acworth reduced the length of Longfellow's twenty-two sections to just eight with added material.

This is the best of me, wrote Edward Elgar after the final measure of his Dream of Gerontius. Premiered in 1900, in Great Britain the work has long been a standard work in the repertoire of large oratorio choirs. Elgar's delightful Salut d'Amour, one of his earliest successes, dates from 1889, when Elgar had just turned 30: this proved to be a year of great happiness for him, for at that time he married Caroline Alice Roberts - a lady who was to mean so much to him as man and musician. Pleading is a song for solo voice with Piano accompaniment, written in 1908. It was composed for, and dedicated to, the composer's great friend Lady Maud Warrender. It was published as the composer's opus 41 in three arrangements: No. 1 is for medium voice, and is set in the Key of G major. Versions for low and high voices are also available. The text is from a poem by Arthur L. Salmon.

Edward Elgar (1857-1934) is one of England's best-known and most-loved composers. He was self-taught as composer, coming from outside the musical and social establishment, which allowed his music to be fresh and unencumbered.
