This edition of the Catalan folk songs is more complete and contains more works than in any other edition. It is particularly generously documented. There is also an illustrated 12 page chronology of Llobet's life with 61 rare photographs and documents. As in all our editions both a detailed documented critical commentary and copious notes are included. Catalan song also connects Llobet to the cultural restlessness of the epoch in which he was born and grew up, to the movement relating to the birth and definition of a Catalan cultural identity, which, when properly understood, was to reveal all the more fully Llobet's intellectual and above all his musical stature, before we came to consider him a great poet of the guitar as well.

Emilio Calandin: Piccola sfumaturaClaudia Montero: Lagrimas de Buenos AiresMarco Reghezza: Como PreludioMarco Smaili: PreludioAlessandro Spazzoli: Preludio in Do maggioreRoberto Tagliamacco: Prelude sur le nom de TarregaPaolo Ugoletti: Prelude sur le nom de TarregaHaving been invited several times onto the jury of the prestigious Certamen Tarrega in Benicasim, I thought I would involve a few composers in a gift to the father of the modern guitar. So I asked the composers to write a Prelude of the kind that Tarrega wrote and which count among his most significant compositions. These Preludes for Tarrega, all written between August and November 2015, are very different from each other. The common feature, however, between these and the Preludes by Tarrega is their brevity, an average level of performance difficulty and guaranteed easy listening, even when written in a non-tonal language (like the meditative and melancholy piece by Emilio Calandin and the one by Marco Smaili, with its Impressionistic feel reminding one of Tarrega's most famous pupil, Miguel Llobet). In some Preludes (the ones by Paolo Ugoletti, Roberto Tagliamacco, Claudia Montero) the reference to Lagrima, one of Tarrega's most famous Preludes, is evident in form, title and some citations. Ugoletti and Tagliamacco work well and expressively on harmony and counterpoint, while the Argentinian Claudia Montero links Tarrega to a heartbreaking Buenos Aires...In Alessandro Spazzoli there is rather more a connection with Tarrega's sense of melody and deep simplicity, while Marco Reghezza remembers ironically what was brewing in European music when Tarrega was alive: in fact, his Como Preludio goes across the 24 keys - and even a reference to Wagner's Tristan raises its head...I am delighted for this volume to come out at the time of the fiftieth edition of the Certamen Tarrega.(Piero Bonaguri).

Composed at various times of the composer's life, Lirica Catalana op. 14 [Catalan Lyric] is an anthology of Catalan texts from various authors and reviews of popular songs. This is the same process Comellas followed in Lirica Castellana and Lirica Inglesa. The songs of these groups do not have a musical connection, but more a linguistic connection. The melodic flow in the different groups, shows how the text and the language used, produced a concrete response Comellas' harmonic vocabulary. The highlight of this group is the Cant de la Sibil·la [Song of the Sybil·la], a liturgical drama and Gregorian chant, whose lyrics recounts a prophecy of the Apocalypse and was originally interpreted in Latin. From the thirteenth century there are versions in Catalan. These earlier versions Judici Signum weren't direct translations from Latin, but came from previous adaptations Old Provencal and Old Catalan, which gives us the idea of the enormous popularity of this song must have had in the past. The text by Comellas used is one of the most popular in Catalonia.

Miguel Llobet's famous Catalan plucked string orchestra called the 'Lira Orfeo' was active in Barcelona from 1899-1906. Here we present a new engraving of all the surviving original scores, set in the same performing score format in which they were originally used 120 years ago. The Lira Orfeo quickly became an important part of Barcelona's cultural scene; with Tárrega as its honorary president the Lira Orfeo society was founded in 1898 and an official inaugural concert, shared between Manuel Burgés (pno) and Miguel Llobet (gtr) took place in Barcelona in 1898. The aim of the society was to offer a full musical education, both theoretical and instrumental, for guitarists and players of other plucked instrument family, with eventually with a place in its Catalan plucked instrument orchestra of the same name. The teachers for guitar were Miguel Llobet, Pedro Lloret and Domingo Prat. Prominent musicians such as Manuel Burgés and Baldomera Cateura were also on the teaching staff. Classes were given three times a week, and as the players were mainly amateurs with day jobs, these took place in the evening and often went on until 2 o'clock in the morning. The debut of the orchestra took place in 1903 and it gave regular concerts at top venues right up to the society's dissolution in 1907, mainly due to lack of funding. For the instruments used see the list of works below. The repertoire is varied, selected, arranged by Miguel Llobet it was mainly drawn from traditional and impressionist Iberian music, as well as the German classics, it includes a specially commissioned work Triomphe d'Orphée' by the famous Catalán pianist Manuel Burgés. We at Guitar Heritage are proud to present the first publication of this huge cultural contribution to music in its original form and prepared from the source manuscripts which were the work of Miguel Llobet. The edition has many illustrations, rare documents and photographs as well as a comprehensive critical commentary by Stefano Grondona - whose knowledge of Miguel Llobet, as well as of Catalonian culture, has made an edition of this scope possible. These arrangements are superb and presented as they originally were in the same score form. The now relatively rare instruments called for can be replaced by suitable alternatives - this is ideal and interesting material for adapting to guitar orchestra/ensemble or mandolin orchestra, or similar.

German composer, Kurt Weill (1900-1950) is best remembered as a leading composer for the stage. His collaboration with playwright Jacques Deval to create the dramatised production of Marie Galante was well received. Marie Galantewas originally a novel by Deval. Weill composed music for the play in 1934, and later for the screen version. This collection of the favourite pieces from the stage show include The Ladies from Bordeaux and Dancing Scene. For allopera or musical theatre vocalists, the songs from Marie Galante are varied and make for an exciting addition to the repertoire.

The Reverend Alan Gaunt, a minister of the United Reformed Church, is particularly known for his hymn texts We pray for peace and Lord Christ, we praise your sacrifice. This volume brings together his corpus of writing. He is strongly biblical in his approach and is prepared to look at Bible, faith and the contemporary world squarely, bringing them together in texts for use in worship. His work also includes some new translations from early texts intended for use by a new generation. Such new exposure to the original through a new translation can be salutary. The introduction is written by the Reverend Alan Luff.

Try this in your Christmas concert if you want a calm reflective moment. Its haunting melodic setting provides an enticing mood that sounds vocally advanced, but is actually technically within the grasp of most choirs.
