Although TOCCATA was originally conceived for harpsichord, the 6½-minute showpiece is notably pianistic. It is full of pedaling, surging and swelling hairpin dynamics, and dramatic effects in the extreme registers. As with baroque toccatas, Ewazen’s main theme is an energetic perpetual motion with repeated and stable “anchoring” notes. However the overall work is a dramatic argument between that central theme and opposing harmonic styles, long notes interrupting the rapid fire, and a tug-of-war between triplets and sixteenths.

Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a French composer who was well-known and well-regarded in his lifetime. His legacy included breaking from the grand opera tradition and influencing the next generation of Frenchcomposers. March of the Marionette was originally a piano solo titled Funeral March of a Marionette. Gounod wrote the piece to make fun of the music critic, Henry Chorley. The marionette dies in a duel, possibly a musical imitation of a public argument about the merits of Gounod’s compositions. The marionette’s friends have a funeral for him, creating a procession through the streets, with a brief stop for refreshments, illustrated in the D major section. This now-familiar theme has been used in frequently in advertisements, movies, and television shows. It was used as the theme music for Alfred Hitchcock Presents television show (1956-66) introducing dramas, mysteries, and thrillers.The prevailing bow strokes in this piece range from spiccato stroke to a light brush stroke for all eighth notes, regardless of articulation markings. Students should experiment with bow distribution to discover the appropriate placement for different dynamics. Students just learning the spiccato bow stroke will be more successful if they start this bow stroke close to their bow hand. Encourage students to discuss the character of the music and how to bring the storyline to life as an ensemble.

In ,,Beds and Brackets gibt es ein Stuck im Stuck: Statement zu einem Faustschlag Nonos. Kurz vor seinem Tod war ich mit Nono zusammen in einer Kompositionswettbewerbs-Jury. Wahrend dieser Tage schlug er manchmal mit der Faust schwere, massige Rhythmen elementarster Proportion auf den Tisch. Vierfaches Forte. Diese Befreiungsschlage hafteten die ganze Zeit wahrend der Arbeit an Statement in meinem Gedachtnis. Sie waren ganz aus dem Nahbereich des Machens und Wahrnehmens geboren. Solcher Nahbereich menschlicher Sinnenwelt ist auch musikalisches Ausfuhrungs- und Hormodell des ubrigen Stuckes. Die jeweiligen Tone werden aus der 88-tastigen Klaviatur aufgrund von Bewegungsentwurfen abgerufen, deren Streckenmasse und Geschwindigkeiten, multipliziert mit den jeweils zu bewegenden Organ(gewicht)en, Ton und Harmonik charakterisieren. Der horizontale, zeitliche Verlauf des Stuckes verwirrt zeitweise die Nahbereichswahrnehmung durch Wiederholung. In der Partitur zeigen numerierte Klammern das jeweilige Notentextfragment an, das an einer anderen Stelle in den musikalischen Verlauf eingeschoben werden soll, und zwar so, als wurde es zum ersten Mal erklingen. Es geht also nicht um psychisch-dynamische Weiterspinnung, sondern um eine live simulierte Wiederholung von Vergangenem, als ware es gar nicht vergangen. Derartige horizontale Bewegungsentwurfe betonen an Wiederholung eher das Fremde, Sprengende, nicht das Zusammenhangschaffende. Gegen Ende argumentiert der korperliche Nahbereich, schlagt um in ,,Umgebung: Lauft da nicht ein Radio, ein Fernseher, ein Kuhlschrank? Geht da nicht ein Wind draussen? Fahrt nicht ein Auto? Spielen da nicht Kinder? Tonbander sind nur eine schwache Simulation! Im Optimalfall sollen Fenster und Turen des Konzertsaales geoffnet und wieder geschlossen werden. (Nicolaus A. The Petite Suite, published in 1885, is Borodin's major work for the Piano and originally comprised of seven movements. Mr. Sauer's arrangement incorporates three of them: Intermezzo, Reverie and Serenade. The Petite Suite was dedicated to the Belgian Countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau, who was a supporter of Borodin and his music. After Borodin's death in 1887, Glazunov orchestrated the Suite.

The music has that Eastern flavor so indicative of Borodin's melodies, mysterious, lyrical and subtle. Advanced performers will enjoy this work which has been so beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauer.

Quella fra Schubert e la chitarra è la storia di un amore mancato. Franz a 16 anni compose una piccola Cantata per lâ??onomastico di suo padre per tre voci maschili e chitarra, dimostrando di saper scrivere efficacemente per uno strumento da sempre considerato un rompicapo per i compositori non chitarristi. Lâ??anno successivo riadattò un Trio per flauto, viola e chitarra di Wenzeslaus Matiegka, uno dei migliori chitarristi presenti a Vienna in quel periodo, aggiungendovi la parte per violoncello, e così poté studiare una partitura in cui la chitarra si muove con grande estro e maestria, se mai la sua immensa ispirazione ne avesse avuto bisogno.
Dunque, le premesse per dedicare alla chitarra qualcosa di importante câ??erano tutte, e se non si sono realizzate, lâ??unico motivo non può che essere il disinteresse di Schubert per lâ??universo delle sei corde.
Eppure in lui câ??è qualcosa di affine alla chitarra: il suo carattere implosivo, la sua vita povera e borderline. Qualcosa che ha ispirato i chitarristi. Qualcosa che è appunto lâ??argomento di questo libro, perché, si sa, spesso anche gli amori senza storia in realtà una storia ce lâ??hanno.
