This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The ââ¬ÅSanctusââ¬Â begins quietly, with divided sopranos trading off on a major second in a mysterious and meditative way. Parts add and build until the basses enter with a cantus firmus of sorts. The major second continues to figure prominently in the ensuing material. The movement ends with a simple melody repeated in unison (ââ¬ÅHosanna in excelsisââ¬Â) fading away into the distance. Duration 3:55.

Charles Callahan’s “Celtic Prelude†is the composer’s setting for string orchestra of the first movement of his well-known “Celtic Suite for Organ.†Based on an original tune composed in the Celtic spirit, the prelude elaborates on the tune’s graceful simplicity through a traditional tonal harmonic setting with the thematic materials shared among the voices. The introductory measures may be performed by solo players in each section, or the entire work can be played by quintet or quartet alone. The prelude is a welcome addition to the literature for middle school or high school string orchestra (Grade 3) and is also suitable repertoire for church ensembles.

Tuomas Turriago's (b. 1979) Sonata for Guitar solo (2019, rev. 2020) reflects the main source of anguish of the 21st century: according to the composer things are growing so fast that we can't keep up with the pace. That is true of global warming, of population, of economy, of pandemics. The second movement builds up to a huge climax after which the material of the fist slow part returns, but in a distorted and ghost-like manner. The Sonata dies away gloomily. Janne Malinen commissioned the work and premiered it in Tampere, Finland in June 2019.

Arranged for SATB choir, two keyboards, strings, and optional harp, with soprano, tenor (optional) and baritone soloists, this fresh and unorthodox interpretation reflects on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. For soprano solo and SATB choir, this movement begins with the choir on the English text by Phineas Fletcher (1633). A 32-measure soprano solo follows, which covers the majority of the English text. The soloist then begins the ââ¬ÅRecordare,ââ¬Â a calm, descending melodic line with the choir singing the opening ââ¬ÅDrop, dropââ¬Â motif as accompaniment. The choir then concludes with the slow, descending lines ââ¬ÅJesu pie, Jesu pie.ââ¬Â Duration 4:04.

Arranged for SATB choir, two keyboards, strings, and optional harp, with soprano, tenor (optional) and baritone soloists, this fresh and unorthodox interpretation reflects on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. The “Kyrie†uses Francis Quarles’ “Close now thine eyes and rest secure†as the opposing English text. After the choir begins the requiem text in Latin (“Requiem aeternam†through the “Kyrie eleison,â€) the soprano soloist has a 27-measure solo in which the English text appears. Then the solo is repeated over choir accompaniment and the opening Latin text reappears to close the movement. Duration 9:13.

Four poems by Percy Bysshe Shelley:The Invitation,Hymn of Pan, With Music Sweet as Love from To a Skylark, andMusic, When Soft Voices Die. Notable addition to repertoire for capable women's choirs. Added-note triads, and non-triadic constructions (such as sonorities built from seconds), create colorful harmonic base. Melodic writing basically lyrical. SSA a cappella.

This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The mood of the text is faithfully represented in the setting, yet with a lot of originality. The setting is sometimes declamatory, sometimes mysterious, with a ââ¬ÅCrucifixusââ¬Â which is hushed and reverent. Material from the ââ¬ÅKyrieââ¬Â returns at ââ¬ÅEt resurrexit.ââ¬Â Sections of this movement are in eight parts. Duration 7:16.
