Rheinberger began work on his second Symphony during his visit to Italy with his wife in 1874. He was commissioned to write it by an orchestral society in Florence - an indication that his reputation had already spread throughout Europe. The autograph score contains a poem by his wife Fanny, which in four sections expressed the moods of impressions of the visit which seem to underlie the symphony. Contemporaries praised particularly the beauty of the Adagio. The work is here presented for the first time in an edition based critically on the sources. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5008700.

Beethoven described his Missa solemnis as his greatest work several times, a work which, coming from the heart, was to touch and move audiences. The surviving sources enable us to recognize how intensively and how long he worked on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings, and the premiere took place, for good reason, in a concert hall. The chorus plays a key structural role in the work, and in the process has to master some extremely demanding sections. The leading Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich has produced an Urtext edition based on the available sources, and reflecting the latest state of scholarship. The cantata Freue dich, erloste Schar BWV 30 is one of Bach's last church cantatas. Originally composed as a parody of the cantata Angenehmes Wiederau BWV 30a for the Feast of St. John's Day in 1738, it still enjoys a great popularity today. Its extraordinary length (12 movements) made it possible for Bach to employ four vocal soloists who, together with instrumental soloists, choir and orchestra contribute to the generally festive character of this work. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3103000.

A special charm of the mass is the fact that it dispenses with soloists. In this mass, exemplary for Cherubini's church music is the richness of color in the treatment of the orchestra, as well as in the choral parts, and the expressiveness of the dynamic nuances. In honor of the 150th anniversary of the death of Louis Spohr, for the first time Carus is publishing a critical edition of The Last Judgment, the most important of his four oratorios. It was first performed on Good Friday, 1826 in Kassel. It is based on the theologically most significant portions of the Revelations of John in the New Testament, whose visions of death and eternity Spohr vividly portrayed in music. The work represents an important enrichment to the repertoire of the oratorio, especially suitable for the end of the church year. It is captivating on account of its masterful instrumentation, excellent use of chromaticism, large-scale solo recitatives and accessible choral passages filled with heartfelt sensitivity on the one hand, and exciting drama on the other. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2300300.

The Te Deum, that was composed in 1832, is a convincing work with quick changes of expression and warm orchestral colors. Choruses, including a double chorus, alternate with arias and soloist ensembles, smooth woodwind sounds and an obbligato solo violin with orchestral tuttis and special sound combinations, e.g., in Tibi gloriosus for male voices, bassoons, contrabassoon and three trombones.

Brahms's Ave Maria was composed in 1858. The widely-held opinions in the literature on Brahms - that the work has justifiably been forgotten, the part-writing is monotonous and the style and diction is ponderous - don't do justice to a truly charming piece, based on folksong-like models. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4018000.

With its tonal language of subjective avowal, the first of Beethoven's two masses opens up new worlds of expression for the liturgical texts of the Mass which are expressly modern and point towards the future. Not to be considered a preliminary work to the Missa solemnis, it is an entirely independent work which set standards for the further development of settings of the Mass in the 19th century. Its newness, of which the composer himself was fully aware (I do not speak gladly of my Mass, or of myself, but I do believe that I have treated the text in a manner in which only few have treated it.), paves a way to an hitherto unknown, contemporary avenue to faith which today is still current. Carus presents this important work of church music history in a new critical edition by the Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich. Score available separately - see item CA.4068800.

Max Bruch succeeded in composing an impressive setting of the well known Advent text, O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf (O Saviour, tear open the heavens). Compositionally it is extremely sophisticated in its construction; Bruch combines both the choir and orchestra in a powerfully expressive and moving portrayal of mankind waiting for the coming of the Saviour. Following the premiere of the work in 1869 it was celebrated as Bruch's most important choral work, but later it fell largely into oblivion. Almost 150 years after it was composed, for the first time a critical-scholarly edition is now available to the public. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.1036400.

Carus 70.301/10, which is part of the material associated with this piece, can be used as the choral score. Gabriel Faure composed the Cantique de Jean Racine in 1865, the prizewinning work for the completion of his musical training. The composer expanded the original scoring for choir and organ by adding a string accompaniment; the version with orchestra was first performed in 1906. As a text Faure chose a French adaptation by Jean Racine of the Latin hymn Consors paterni luminis. The Cantique already displays the characteristics of an expressive choral setting typical for Faure, as well as the finely worked out orchestral accompaniment, and together with the Requiem, composed considerably later, it is among the most popular works of the composer. Score and part available separately - see item CA.7030300.

While the solos in earlier masses form an integral part of the structure of the entire work, Christian Bach made the solo sections independent in the sense of the Neopolitan school. The orchestra is occupied with longer preludes and rustling figures. In the eleven movements, Bach was able to unite the compositional techniques and expressivity of the Baroque with the beautiful sound of an Italian cantilena. From the forward by Traugott Fedtke. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3810900.
