The introductory theme of this composition echoes the majestic size of the mountains that are visible from the picture-postcard Cortina d’Ampezzo—the so called Queen of the Dolomites. Then we hear a lyrical theme, in which we feel the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. We can even hear the hustle and bustle of the popular ski resort, before the two opening themes return in reverse order to bring this musical sight-seeing excursion to a close.

Jacob de Haan neemt ons mee naar de majestueuze bergen rondom het schilderachtige Italiaanse bergdorp Cortina d’Ampezzo, ook bekend als de koningin van de Dolomieten. Het beginthema verbeeldt de imposante rotsformaties die je rondom je ziet in Cortina. Dan klinkt een lyrisch thema, refererend aan het vredige berglandschap van deze contreien. Ook de bedrijvigheid van het geliefde wintersportdorp weerklinkt in deze mooie compositie. Beide thema’s komen nog één keer terug in omgekeerde volgorde om tenslotte dit muzikale panorama te besluiten.

Auch die Betriebsamkeit des beliebten Wintersportortes ist zu hören, bevor die beiden Eingangsthemen in umgekehrter Reihenfolge den musikalischen Rundblick beenden.

Il est suivi d’un thème lyrique qui évoque la tranquillité du cadre ainsi que les maisons nichées dans la vallée. De retour en ville, nous entendons les accents joyeux de l’harmonie locale qui joue pour les vacanciers descendant des téléphériques. L’œuvre s’achève avec les sons grandioses du motif initial, qui exprime nouveau la beauté imposante de la couronne montagneuse.

Cortina d’Ampezzo è anche chiamata “la regina delle Dolomiti” per la bellezza mozzafiato del suo paesaggio. Cortina è la meta obbligatoria invernale di VIP italiani ma anche di molti turisti desiderosi di affrontare le splendide piste d’inverno e gli innumerevoli sentieri per indimenticabili passeggiate d’estate. La musica di Jacob de Haan riflette la sublime bellezza dei paesaggi ed è un vero omaggio alla natura.

Erich Schmid (1907 - 2000) was an orchestra conductor, choir director and university lecturer who promoted world premieres and radiobroadcasts of contemporary music in Switzerland. He himself studied with Bernhard Sekles, among others, then with Arnold Schönberg and followed the aesthetics of the New Viennese School in his compositions. The historical-critical Erich Schmid Edition publishes for the first time all sixteen opus-numbered works as well as three additional piano works. The playfully inventive cycle for voice, piano and string quartet, dedicated to his “dear wife” Martha, brings together short compositions written in 1937-40. “These are,” says Schmid, “12 small pieces in a wide variety of instrumentation and different forms - some of them twelve-tone pieces, some of them in a technique that comes close. An attempt to write music that is technically easier to perform.” The arch-like overall form combines folksong-like vocal numbers on text from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” with solo pieces, quartet movements and counterpoint art on the name of “BACH” and expresses Schmid's view of music in a subtly personal way.

Martin Luther expressed radical views which began the reformation movement. His followers protested at the treatment given to Martin Luther, the event from which the term 'Protestant' was derived. It was first published in Joseph Klug's Gesangsbuch in around 1535. Add a majestic Baroque feel to any concert with this simple yet effective arrangement.

The Ukrainian Bell Carol is part of a large choral work entitled Shchedryk by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). The tune is an adaptation of an old 'shchedrivka', a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year's Eve (January 13th) which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. The tune has since been the inspiration for at least four different Christmas carols, of which Carol of the Bells is the most famous. Philip Sparke has sourced the original Ukrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement.

De Ukrainian Bell Carol is onderdeel van het grote koorwerk Shchedryk van de Oekraiense componist Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). De melodie is gebaseerd op een 'shchedrivka', een lied dat van oudsher werdgezongen op de Oekraiense oudejaarsavond (13 januari). In Shchedryk voegde Leontovych de tekst toe over de legende die vertelt dat bij de geboorte van Jezus alle klokken op aarde begonnen te luiden. Sindsdien is deze melodiede inspiratiebron geweest voor ten minste vier verschillende Christmas carols, waarvan Carol of the Bells de beroemdste is. Voor dit meeslepende arrangement heeft Philip Sparke echter de oorspronkelijke Oekraiense melodiegebruikt.

Sein Text handelt von der Legende, die besagt, dass zu Ehren von Jesu Geburt alle Glocken lauteten. Aus der Melodie entstand unter anderem auch das bekannte Carol of the Bells von Peter J. Wilhousky. Philip Sparke griff fur seine bewegende Bearbeitung jedoch auf die originale ukrainische Melodie zuruck.

Ukrainian Bell Carol constitue une des parties de l'œuvre chorale Shchedryk du compositeur ukrainien Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovich (1877-1921). La melodie s'inspire d'un vieux chant traditionnel ukrainien (shchedrivka) chante le Jour de l'An (celebre le 13 janvier, conformement au calendrier julien) dans l'espoir que l'annee a venir se presente sous de bons hospices. A l'ecriture de Shchedryk, Mykola Leontovich a choisi de changer les paroles. Il opte pour la legende selon laquelle, toutes les cloches des eglises se sont mises a carillonner joyeusement pour annoncer la naissance de Jesus. La melodie du chant a inspire au moins quatre noelsdifferents. Carol of the Bells en est la version la plus celebre. Elle a ete adaptee en 1936 (texte et melodie) par Peter J. Wilhousky (1902-1978) d'apres la version originale de Mykola Leontovich. Philip Sparke s'est base sur la melodie du chant traditionnel ukrainien pour realiser cet arrangement brillant et petillant.
