This delightful new composition takes its inspiration from the classic French swash buckling tale of Cyrano de Bergerac and his fight to win the love of the beautiful maiden Roxane. The subject was a perfect departure point for composing a symphonic poem with a variety of musical aspects reflecting the story. Lyricism (the theme of Roxane), dramatic episodes, as well as Debussy-inspired impressionist moments are some of the elements that give the band and its conductor the chance to expose themselves as a versatile ensemble being able to create colour, to sing and to play like virtuosi. This work is sure to become a standard item in the concert band repertoire.

In Cyrano verklankt de componist Piet Swerts het romantische en tragische verhaal van de briljante dichter en zwaardkunstenaar Cyrano de Bergerac en zijn mooie, intellectuele nicht Roxane, op wie hij tot over zijn oren verliefdis. Zijn uiterlijk, met name zijn buitengewoon grote neus, belet hem om zijn gevoelens tegenover haar te uiten. De vele verwikkelingen die uit deze situatie voortkomen zijn te herkennen in deze programmatische compositie.

Piet Swerts erzählt hier musikalisch die tragisch-romantische Geschichte von Cyrano de Bergerac, der einem verliebten Freund hilft, seine Liebe zu erobern und sich dann selbst unglücklich in dessen Angebetete verliebt. Diese Komposition spiegelt die Geschichte mit einer Vielfalt an musikalischen Aspekten eindrucksvoll wider. Lyrik, dramatische Episoden sowie von Debussy inspirierte, impressionistische Momente sind einige der Elemente, die dem Blasorchester und seinem Dirigenten die Chance bieten, sich als vielseitiges Ensemble, das zugleich Farben entfalten, singen und virtuos spielen kann, zu präsentieren.

Cyrano, héros tragique et attachant, est entré dans le patrimoine universel, sans doute parce qu’il incarne superbement un mythe bien ancien : celui de l’amour et du bonheur impossibles. Ce délicieux chef-d’œuvre thé tral d’Edmond Rostand a inspiré ce poème symphonique de Piet Swerts qui s’articule autour d’une grande diversité musicale exprimant différentes scènes de la pièce. DUNHUANG FANTASIA is a fascinating 12-minute drama inspired by art from grottoes in the ancient town of Dunhuang in western China. These frescoes preserve images of music and dance scenes, including the postures and attitudes of performers, and of the musical instruments used. Zhou Long’s music begins with a mysterious introduction driven by drum-like textures, followed by a series of episodes, enhanced by captions of the artwork inspiring each section and evocations of the ancient musical instruments.
Commissioned and with fingering by Zou Xiang, Dunhuang Fantasia was composed in the fall of 2017. The music was inspired by the art of the Mogaoku grottoes in the ancient town of Dunhuang in western China. The frescoes of the Dunhuang grottos preserve a number of music and dance performance scenes, including images of the postures and attitudes of performers, and of a number of musical instrument types are used.The most popular form of music indigenous to this region is the huar, a folk-song type current among a number of nationalities. The huar is actually a kind of mountain song. Along with huar, Dunhuang pipa qupu (Dunhuang pipa notation) is also an inspiration for elements in this music.The music begins in adagio as a mysterious introduction. The drum-like rhythm patterns beating in the lowest region of the piano, with a muted-string sonority, creates an expanded space to enhance the echoes from the grottos. This is soon followed by the first main section, Cup of Happiness, featuring the huar and Dunhuang pipa melodies along with the dance rhythm. In the next section, Water Drum, the music becomes medium tempo. In the section Dialogue in Presto, the music becomes more active and contrapuntal. The section Tune: Changsha Girl is in a faster tempo as a dance scene. The Coda starts with dense rhythms, and tension is gradually intensified to reach a climax, culminating in a return of the opening section.

L’enfance en éclats 2001 [Childhood Shattered]
As its title suggests, Childhood Shattered is program music. A simple and graceful tune, symbolizing childhood, is abruptly interrupted by a horrific, dissonant chord. The tune returns ; but the echo of the chord, still lingering in the background, tells us that the memory of the traumatic event persists. Life has darkened. Nothing is as it was before. The initial melody wanders into keys ever stranger and more distant, ultimately arriving at a new theme, obsessive, with grating seconds and thrusting accents. This shattered childhood and its episodes of aimlessness, will it give birth to new certainties?
The piece is an exercise in contrasting detached notes with tied notes.

Toccata (2004)
This piece by Caroline Charrière issues from the historical lineage of the toccata, traditionally an exercise of dexterity characterized by repeated musical motifs.
The introduction is constructed of subtly displaced upper-register chords in the right hand that alternate with two lower notes in the left hand, creating an almost meditative preamble. In the rapid section of the piece, the performer playfully exploits the keyboard's full breadth in the course of spirited dialogues between notes high and low.
