Because of changes in our school's schedule and the taking away of the music requirement in 7th and 8th grade, our choir numbers have dropped significantly. Searching for music that has educational value and that the choir will sound good on (we know that's important for the parents and faculty) I came across Light arranged by Andy Beck. This quickly became a favorite of my choir! The kids are excited to rehearse it every day and the sound they are achieving fits the folk-like feel of the piece.

We are using the 2-Part version. Being 7th and 8th graders, of my nine boys, three are unchanged voices (singing alto as written) and my other six are in varying stages of voice change. Those six are bouncing back and forth between alto and soprano parts, singing them down an octave.

In a film portrait of dancer, painter and sculptor Antje Tesche-Mentzen, I learned that in former times she was a proficient pianist. When she told me that she intended to begin playing again, I promised to compose her a cycle for her new beginning: 34 miniatures, some of them with a direct connection to her paintings and sculptures.The main part of Kosmos was composed in 2014, 400 years after Albrecht Durer created his copperplate engraving 'Melencolia I', in which a magic square appears. In a magicsquare, numbers are arranged in a grid so that their sum in each column, row, and the two diagonals is the same number. In the square I have chosen, the magic number is 34. In the seventies, Elvis Presley gave many concerts with an orchestra that included a large wind section. These concerts were characterised by enthusiasm and a fast tempo. Burning Love was one of the up-tempo numbers where the bass guitar player played an especially important role. Thus, this arrangement of Burning Love, written by Thijs Oud, brings a specific challenge for the musicians in the low register. The trumpets and the trombones can also play standing behind the band adding to the visual and dynamic enhancement.

Elvis Presley gab in den siebziger Jahren viele Konzerte, auf denen er sich von einem großen Orchester mit zahlreichen Bläsern begleiten ließ. Ein hohes Tempo und absolut mitreißende Begeisterung kennzeichneten diese Auftritte. Eine der beliebten schnellen Nummern war Burning Love, in dem die Bassgitarre eine wichtige Rolle spielte. So ist denn auch Thijs Ouds gelungene Bearbeitung von Burning Love eine besondere Herausforderung für das tiefe Register, während die Trompeten und Posaunen die ursprünglichen Bläserstimmen übernehmen.

Begun in early 1999, the Sibelius Complete Edition brings to a close the publication of the songs for voice and piano with opus numbers in this volume, Series VIII/3 (Works for Voice). Book 3 contains collections written after 1900, when Sibelius was conceiving his songs both textually and stylistically in a more cohesive context without, however, grouping them officially into cycles. As could already be seen in Book 2, Sibelius also shows a preference here for poems in Swedish. Indeed, the Finnish composer's vocal oeuvre is stamped by poets such as Ernst Josephson, Johan Ludvig Runeberg and Karl August Tawaststjerna.
