Based on the true story of the sister of George III, Caroline Mathilde (1751-1775), who at the age of 15 was sent to Denmark to marry the 17-year-old eccentric and schizophrenic Danish King, Christian VII. Halloween is celebrated in many countries around the world on October 31. Traditionally, children go door-to-door dressed up in costumes and collect sweets and treats. A hollowed out pumpkin with a face carved into it, called a jack-o-lantern, is a traditional symbol of Halloween. Some jack-o-lanterns have scary faces, while others have fun, whimsical faces. The trombones in this piece represent the jack-o-lanterns with their whimsical faces—hence the title The Funny Pumpkins. Your trombone section will have immense fun with this new solo feature.

The energetic activities of three craftsmen at a local crafts market inspired the composer Christian Bouthier to write this work in three movements. The clockmaker gets many curious visitors at his stand. He patiently and proudly shows the precision work of his beautiful clocks and lets all of them tick - the small ones and large ones. The cooper (barrel-maker) skillfully puts together fine-looking, sturdy barrels of the best types of wood. From afar, you can hear the cooper hammering. In the final movement things are hectic at the blacksmith because the local horse-riding society has just arrived. Many horses are provided with new shoes. The experienced blacksmith hits thehorseshoes into the proper shape on his anvil; now the horses can spiritedly trot and gallop on the way back. A fascinating new addition to the concert band repertoire.

De energieke werkzaamheden van drie ambachtslieden op een plaatselijke ambachtsmarkt inspireerden de Belgische componist Christian Bouthier tot het schrijven van The Craftsmen, een compositie in drie delen. De klokkenmaker,de kuiper (tonnenmaker) en de hoefsmid worden achtereenvolgens op ludieke wijze in de muziek weergegeven.

Zu The Craftsmen - ‘Die Handwerker’ - ließ sich Christian Bouthier beim Bummel über einen Markt inspirieren, wo alte Handwerkskünste vorgeführt wurden. In den drei Sätzen seiner Komposition werden sehr anschaulich die Klangeindrücke in Musik umgesetzt: das Ticken nostalgischer Uhren beim Uhrmacher, das Hämmern des Böttchers beim Bau von Holzfässern und schließlich das Schlagen der Hufeisen, bevor der Hufschmied die Pferde beschlägt. Ein Werk der Reihe Flexible 5 für eine fünfstimmig variable Besetzung, an dem Musiker und Publikum ihre Freude haben werden!

Hymne an die Nacht is a deeply moving theme by the master composer Ludwig van Beethoven. It is taken from his Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (Appassionata), which he composed between 1804-1806. This theme originates from the second movement of this famous sonata which Beethoven himself considered his best work in this genre. The passion of this sonata inspired Michael Bilkes to make this beautiful arrangement.

Hymne an die Nacht is een ontroerend thema van meestercomponist Ludwig van Beethoven. Het is afkomstig uit zijn sonate nr. 23 in F-mineur, opus 57 (Appassionata), die hij componeerde in 1804-1806. Dit thema komt uithet tweede deel van deze beroemde sonate, die door Beethoven zelf werd beschouwd als zijn beste. Het inspireerde Michael Bilkes tot het schrijven van deze mooie bewerking.

Die Hymne an die Nacht ist ein bewegendes Thema aus der Sonate Nr. 23 in f-Moll, op. 57 (Apassionata) von Ludwig van Beethoven, welche er in den Jahren 1804-1806 komponierte. Inspiré par ce chef-d’œuvre d’émotion, Michael Bilkes en a réalisé un arrangement gracieux et harmonieux.

La linea melodica è tratta dal secondo movimento della celebre Sonata per piano n. 23 in Fa minore Op. 57 detta “Appassionata” (1804-1806) che Beethoven stesso considerava come la più riuscita. Ispirato da questo capolavoro, Michael Bilkes ha realizzato un armonioso arrangiamento per banda.

Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him.
