The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

French composer Daniel François Esprit Aubers extensive outputconsisted mainly of operas, but unfortunately today only two of theseare still well known, including the comic opera Fra Diavolo. The storyconcerns Fra Diavolo, a famous Italian bandit and soldier from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and is one of crime, lust and treachery. The overture has a classical structure filled with striking themes and motifs with a particularly unusual introduction (for the time) with the snare drum taking the leading role!

De ouverture van Fra Diavolo, een komische opera van de Franse componist Daniel François Esprit Auber (1782-1871), heeft een klassieke opbouw. De gebruikte thema’s zijn zeer herkenbaar en roepen duidelijke beelden op. Signaalmotievenzijn rijkelijk aanwezig - en deze mogen natuurlijk ook niet ontbreken als het in de handeling gaat over rovers en gendarmes. De inleiding is voor Aubers tijd bijzonder ge nstrumenteerd: de kleine trom speelt een solistischerol!

Die Ouvertüre zu Aubers komischer Oper Fra Diavolo hat eine klassische Form mit leicht wieder erkennbaren Themen, klaren Bildern und deutlichen Motiven - sehr passend zu einer ebenfalls einprägsamen, turbulenten Handlung voll von Gerichtsvollziehern und Dieben! Unsentimentale, reizvolle Musik, die auch in der Transkription von Wil van der Beek das Publikum in ihren Bann ziehen wird!

Daniel François Esprit Auber (Caen, 1782 ; Paris, 1871) a été témoin de tout un cycle de l’histoire de la musique, de Luigi Cherubini Richard Wagner. Son répertoire comporte essentiellement des opéras. Des quarante opéras qu’il a composés, seuls deux ont su résister aux vicissitudes du temps : La Muette de Portici (parfois nommée Masaniello) et Fra Diavolo. La Muette de Portici est un opéra révolutionnaire de nombreux égards ; la légende veut même que la représentation du 29 juin 1830, au Thé tre de la Monnaie de Bruxelles ait déclenché l’insurrection qui fut l’origine du mouvement révolutionnaire entraînant la séparation de la Belgique et de laHollande. L’opéra-comique Fra Diavolo se révèle par son intérêt musical, qui lui vaut d’être interprété de nos jours encore. Les nombreuses aventures du capitaine Fra Diavolo sont restées captivantes gr ce un langage musical attrayant, dénué de sentimentalité.L’ouverture Fra Diavolo est de structure classique. Les thèmes simples et débonnaires évoquent des images claires, et de nombreux appels et échos militaires nous rappellent que l’intrigue se développe au rythme des péripéties des brigands et des carabiniers ! L’introduction de l’ouverture est orchestrée de façon inhabituelle pour l’époque. La caisse claire tient le rôle principal.

Julius Fucik (1872-1916) was born in Prague, Czech Republic. He studied under Antonin Dvorák and at a young age played in military bands and later became bandmaster, a profession he practiced in various cities with many bands. In 1913 he settled in Berlin where he started his own music publishing house. As a composer Fucik is known for his light entertaining music however he also wrote chamber music, songs, choral works, a mass, a requiem and an unfinished opera. Many of his works have fallen into oblivion but many of his marches such as Einzug der Gladiatoren, Regimentskinder and Florentiner Marsch are still often played. With the concert overture Marinarella, Fucik takes us toan imaginary seaside resort on a beautiful spring day. Marinarella, a girl of the sea, accompanies us on our stroll. Leisurely walking couples on the boulevard, the murmur of the sea, fragments of a waltz melody from a café and a concert band performing a promenade concert pass you by. A fantastic opening work for any concert.

Met de concertouverture Marinarella neemt de Tsjechische componist Julius Fucik ons mee naar een denkbeeldige badplaats aan de kust op een mooie lentedag. Marinarella, een meisje van de zee, vergezelt ons op onze wandeling.Slenterende paartjes op de boulevard, het ruisen van de zee, flarden van een walsmelodie uit een café en een blaasorkest dat een promenadeconcert verzorgt passeren de revue. De vorm van deze ouverture is eenvoudig: na een snelleen luide opening volgt een langzaam, ongedwongen deel waarin enige solopassages zijn verwerkt. De afsluiting is weer krachtig en snel.

Julius Fucik (1872-1916) hat sich als Komponist vor allem mit Marschmusik wie dem Florentiner Marsch aber auch mit Werken in anderen Genres einen Namen gemacht. Mit dieser Konzertouvertüre entführt er uns auf einen Spaziergang ans Meer, in charmanter Begleitung eines Mädchens namens Marinarella. Gemütlich am Boulevard entlang schlendernd, schnappen wir verschiedene Geräusche und Konzerte auf. Ihr Publikum wird die Musik gerne auf diesen einfach strukturierten, aber sehr unterhaltsamen musikalischen Spaziergang begleiten!
