The march style is important to the heritage of the modern concert band. Why not get beginners off to a great start by teaching them this essential band style as early as possible? Achieve uses only the first six notes of the Bb-major scale and utilizes two repeated eighth notes as the most difficult rhythm. It is written in traditional march form and style, but without modulation in the trio. The march style is important to the heritage of the modern concert band, and it is my opinion that even the youngest of students should be taught the march style and form as early as possible. This march sets out to give these students that opportunity. It uses only the first six notes of the Bb-major scale, and the most difficult rhythm is two repeated eighth notes. Yet it has all of the traditional march form and style. The form of this easy march is the traditional intro, first strain, second strain and trio. The only difference from more challenge marches is that the key does not change to the subdominant at the trio. Most everything else is the same as you would find in the American marches of Sousa, Fillmore or King. The march begins forte with a quote from the end of the second strain, something that is common in many marches. This is followed by the first strain at a softer dynamic level. Additional voices are added on the repeat for variety. The second strain has tradition changes in dynamics, first starting out loud, then getting soft with crescendos to the end of the strain. The trio following again in typical fashion with the first time being very soft and legato. There are some suggestions for changing the orchestration, but you can use your creativity to tailor the instrumentation to your musical taste. The repeat of the trio should then be back to a more marcato march style. This should start with the last note of the first ending in m. 70. The march then ends with the traditional stinger. It is my opinion that in marches with this form that the repeats should not be eliminated. By doing so, it changes the form and makes the march lopsided, with the first half of the marching being too short compared to the trio section. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.—Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2018.

Based on oral history of the Anishinaabeg, this piece draws its name from Ojibwe historian Basil Johnston, who offered the literal translation of the name as Spontaneous Beings. Based on authentic folk music and steeped in tradition, the piece relies heavily on traditional percussion instruments (with optional substitutes suggested). Very approachable, yet extremely powerful.

The Eastman Wind Ensemble is America's leading wind ensemble. Frederick Fennell first formulated the general concept of the wind ensemble at Eastman nearly 65 years ago. Under his leadership the group became known as the pioneering force in the wind ensemble movement in the United States and abroad. A. Clyde Roller served as conductor between 1962 and 1964, continuing the tradition established by Fennell. Donald Hunsberger became conductor in 1965 and led the ensemble for 37 years to international prominence. The ensemble's current director, Mark Davis Scatterday, was introduced as the fourth conductor of this prestigious group during the EWE's 50th anniversary celebration on February 8, 2002. Since its founding, the EWE has been the leader in elevating the wind repertory through recordings. Fennell's Mercury Recordings albums of the 1950s and early '60s are notable for their pioneering use of binaural, stereo, and 35mm recording techniques. These Living Presence recordings focused on standard band literature by the most respected classical composers -- heard for the first time in the newly balanced one-per-part instrumentation. They also centered on major repertory not found on traditional band programs, such as Mozart's Serenade in B-flat (the Gran Partita), Messiaen's Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum, and Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments. Under Hunsberger, the EWE continued its progressive stance in recording techniques with participation in quadraphonic and digital recording. Since its founding, the ensemble has premiered more than 200 new works. The EWE and Mark Scatterday have continued this rich recording tradition with several CDs starting in 2005 with Danzante (featuring trumpet virtuosi James Thompson) on Summit Records. Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditional march form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short, introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into a second theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional 'bass strain', played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicately scored and featuring the tenor instruments and the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close.

In these challenging economic times, what better way to show creativity and compliance than this hilarious setting of the traditional Jingle Bells? The opening announcement reminds the audience that our budgets have been cut and the band has been forced to reduce the amount of new instrument purchases. As a result, the band went to the toy shop and bought several new instruments including the kazoo, toy drum, toy xylophone, and trash can lid cymbals among others. Following the tuning of the toys, the swing setting kicks off and features the toys in melody, improvisation and response quotes throughout. Now that’s what I call using our resources!.

An outstanding work for soloist and band, this distinctive composition focuses on three unique performance styles. Based on quartal harmonies and melodic structures, Intrada is technically challenging, yet quite accessible to the more advanced high school or collegiate students. A rubato, quazi-improvised jazz style is required in the second movement (Recitative), with the Rondo written in a more traditional, classical style. The band accompaniment is very playable, allowing for the showcasing of your trumpet, saxophone or euphonium soloist. Don't miss this opportunity to WOW your audiences!

In Dublin Dances Jan Van der Roost has combined three well-known traditional Irish melodies to form an attractive medley. The medley contains Brian Boru’s March, a melody made popular by worldfamous flautist James Galway, followed bythe atmospheric tune The Minstrel Man and, as a cheerful finale, The Irish Washerwoman. Add a little magic from the Emerald Isle to your concert with this rousing medley. This charming holiday novelty piece opens with Bavarian-style folk melodies. We then hear a musical depiction of the toys with percussionists quickly alternating between traditional and accessory instruments while winds and brass add humor with glissandos, color punches, and imitation. This clever composition is an excellent choice for the holiday season that will bring smiles to your audience. Glucklich beim spielen! (Happy playing!).

This traditional melody is known worldwide as a song of farewell. Jan Van der Roost treated it as an anthem in this splendid arrangement. The melody is brought to us in whole or in part by various instruments and is surrounded by logical yet original - sometimes surprising - chords that dare to fluctuate. After a broad tutti, the ensemble begins to die out. The piece ends with an impressive diminuendo of the final chord, almost as if the orchestra itself were saying goodbye.
