There is a lot to be said for the argument that the oratorio Wacht! Euch zum Streit gefasset macht, which has been handed down anonymously, is actually the only surviving Abendmusik from Dieterich Buxtehude and that he composed this work, also known as Das Jungste Gericht, for St. Mary's Church in Lubeck, where it was probably performed around 1683. For the first time this full-length work, with its richly contrasting style and dramatic action, is made accessible for performance in its original form. Ton Koopman reconstructed the parts which were missing from the source. Score available separately - see item CA.3601900.

This work was commissioned for the choir of St. Paul's Old Church, Edinburgh, who gave the first performance on the 11th of June 1989 at St. Giles' Church, Edinburgh, conducted by Leslie Shankland. This is a setting in Scots of the passage in the Apocalypse where St. John hears a voice from the throne, that voice appearing here as soprano-alto duets from a distance, building, as Davies has said, ' fine bridge' from the time of the Edinburgh church to the present. Both vocal groups sing in translucent modal harmony with organ support.

Commissioned by the Maryknoll Community to celebrate its centenary of papal approval in 2011, Missa ad Gentes was composed with a particular vision – to create a Mass setting with the 2010 revised English texts representing both Maryknoll’s United States heritage as well as the diverse cultures in which Maryknoll missioners serve in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.  With each piece of the Mass, Fr. Joncas honors the musical heritage of a different culture, creating a truly unique setting celebrating the Church’s diversity. The title, meaning “Mass ‘to the peoples’†draws on the text of the Second Vatican Council’s document on missionary activities. “It is my hope that the Missa ad Gentes will assist English-speaking Roman Rite Catholics to worship with new liturgical texts, faithful to their heritage but enriched by the great diversity of languages and cultures that make up the Church Catholic.†-Michael Joncas.

John Tavener's Ode Of Saint Andrew Of Crete for SSSATBB. This work was comissioned by the Southern Arts Festival with funds provided by the Southern Arts Council. Composers Note: Saint Andrew of Crete was born in Damascus c. 650, and died in the early 8th century. In the Orthodox Church, his Great Canon is appointed to be read in its entirety at the Thursday Morning Service in the fifth week of Great Lent. In this work I have set the first Ode of Saint Andrew's great poem, with interpolations of the refrain Have mercy upon me, O God, have mercy upon me in English, Greek and Church Slavonic. - J.T.
