Rimsky-Korsakov composed his three greatest orchestral works over a short period: he completed Capriccio Espagnol in 1887, and he composed Russian Easter Overture in 1888, simultaneously with the symphonic suite Scheherazade. Russian Easter Overture is a magnificent overture in a single movement that was dedicated to the composers Borodin and Moussorgsky. Several hymns of the Russian Orthodox Church create a characteristic atmosphere. Vaughan Williams traveled during 1903 to 1906, collecting folk songs first-hand from residents. This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the premiere the composer wrote: I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here, swaying in the west wind. I wrote this, hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece. Opening with a heroic fanfare, this stunning original composition was inspired by the 15th century Inca citadel Machu Picchu and specifically the Intihuatana stone in what is now southeastern Peru where sun worship was favored. Many historians have come to refer to the Inca Empire as Children of the Sun. The work continues with an intense, almost frenzied, component that sets the stage for an active interplay of contrasting themes featuring a melodic statement interrupted by accented percussive statements. A pensive and lush moment builds with strong percussion contribution to a bold and satisfying conclusion. (4:45).

When one sees the name of Elliot Del Borgo, it is immediately associated with concert band music of the highest order. Dervish Dance is no exception. Here is an energetic dance set in the Dorian mode (natural minor), which gives it the Middle Eastern flavor. The opening section can be played as fast as possible followed by a contrasting slow section. The closing is a powerful depiction of the famed Whirling Dervish. Even though the piece is speedy, the notes lay well under the fingers, and it sounds much more difficult than it is. A great festival opener or closer!
