This composition tells the story of a quest to find truth, which is relative and constantly changing. It is often to be found in the place where water becomes steam, somewhere in Between on the dividing line between Ying and Yang, somewhere in a twilight zone between dark and light, between Black and White. Black, White & In Between was conceived as a concertino for violin and string orchestra. It has been recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under direction of the composer with Marta Abraham as soloist.

In the summer of 1852, Vier Stücke ['Four Pieces'] for viola and piano by Robert Schumann were published under the title Märchenbilder ['Fairy-Tale Pictures'] by the Kassel publishing house Luckhardt, with a particularly expressive vignette on the titlepage. Unusual were both this title Märchenbilder, on the one hand, and the scoring with a solo viola, on the other. With the viola in a soloistic role in chamber music, Schumann's Märchenbilder, Op. 113, offers a rather unfamiliar, but all the more delightful sound.

Drawing on the composer's transcriptions for violin (with Samuel Dushkin) and for cello (with Gregor Piatigorsky), Kim Kashkashian has produced a long-overdue viola version of this neoclassical masterpiece. The choice of movements from Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite differs between those for violin and cello; Kashkashian has in turn made a slightly different selection comprising Introduzione, Serenata, Aria, Tarantella, Toccata and Minuetto e Finale. A show-stopping addition to the repertory of modern viola music.

As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with fairy tales: with their archetypal characters and set phrases like'Once upon a time...'and'...they all lived happily ever after'. Fairy tales were however also a source of unrest for me as a seismograph of mankinds underlying primal fears and desires. So as a performer and composer I have always felt that Robert Schumann's Marchenerzahlungen [Fairy Tales] (scored for the same instrumentation as my own composition) was a disjointed, complex contemporary work - despite the innocence and naivety of its initial appearance. I therefore do not intend my own Es war einmal (Once upon a time...)to be a mere sentimental, nostalgic flight into the distant past, but as a naive and fantastical alternative concept to our genuine world with all its upheavals. This is a unique improvisation for violin and Piano based on a theme by Erik Satie and to which other original themes have been added. The work will certainly be a delight for the public because the sound material is treated in both classical and jazzy style. Certainly this is a piece to be enjoyed by the players, but audiences have shown that they too share the same pleasure, for sure it is a smart choice for the players that want to achieve the acclaim from the audience. This piece of music is suitable both for concerts given by professionals and for auditions in schools, colleges, conservatories or can be used in various other private events.
