String quartet SKU: HL.49045639 Chaconne. Composed by Fred Lerdahl...(+)
String quartet SKU: HL.49045639 Chaconne. Composed by Fred Lerdahl. This edition: Saddle stitching. Sheet music. String Ensemble. Softcover. Composed 2016. 108 pages. Duration 990 seconds. Schott Music #ED 30174. Published by Schott Music (HL.49045639). ISBN 9781540004796. UPC: 888680710774. 9.5x12.0x0.37 inches. Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissioned by the Daedalus Quartet to celebrate its 15th anniversary. The commission was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Helen F. Whitaker Fund, and Aaron Copland Fund for Music. My music has a substantial history with Daedalus. I composed the Third String Quartet (2008) for them, and subsequently they performed my three string quartets on several occasions and recorded them brilliantly on Bridge Records (Bridge 9352: Music of Fred Lerdahl, vol. 3). Chaconne is in one movement lasting 19 minutes. It is effectively my fourth string quartet. Quartets 1-3 form a unified cycle lasting 70 minutes. When I finished the cycle, I thought I would never write again for the medium; yet I could not resist the opportunity of working again with Daedalus. The issue was how to compose another string quartet unrelated to the earlier cycle. The solution came from my solo cello piece There and Back Again (2010), which was based on a four-bar variation pattern from a 17th-century chaconne. Unlike the asymmetrical phrases and expanding variations of much of my music, the chaconne form requires symmetrical phrases and strictly periodic variations. I wished to work again with these symmetries but on a larger scale. Chaconne also differs in character and expression from the three-quartet cycle. The cycle is inward and intense, a kind of psychological excavation. Chaconne is, for the most part, transparent and playful. Many of its textures emerge from little canons, not completely unlike the rounds that children sing. Any composer who writes in chaconne form (one thinks above all of the last movement of Bach's D minor violin partita and the finale of Brahms's Fourth Symphony) is confronted with the challenge of how to create a larger form out of a constantly repeating pattern. My Chaconne grows from paired antecedent-consequent phrases, each variation lasting eight bars. The 50 variations group into three large rotations, forming three arcs of tension and relaxation, with subtle parallel connections across the rotations. Notwithstanding my attraction to chaconne form, I purposefully disguised its symmetries and periodicities in order to build an overall dramatic shape. This theatrical miniature has carved a unique place in music literature, thanks to many warm hearts and minds. In 2005 the distinguished violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins started a project called Music Kitchen where the homeless and needy, after a meal provided by a soup kitchen, were treated to a concert performed by some of the best musicians in New York. After these concerts, Hall-Tompkins asked the listeners for comments. This became inspiration for Zwilichâ??s MUSIC KITCHEN INTERPLAY, which includes vocal settings of listenersâ?? comments in musical counterpoint with reworked fragments of her Fantasy for Solo Violin. In 2005 the wonderful violinist, Kelly Hall-Tompkins, started a project called Music Kitchen where needy (often homeless) people, after a meal provided by a Soup Kitchen, were treated to a concert performed by some of the best musicians in New York. After the concerts, Kelly asked the listeners if they had any comments, and she saved these. To celebrate of 10 years of the project, in 2015 Kelly asked a number of composers to write a composition for Music Kitchen. I loved the idea, and I was particularly inspired by the comments that the listeners had made. The premiere of Music Kitchen Interplay featured Kellyâ??s performance, based on my Fantasy for Solo Violin, with audience comments (like â??never been so close to a violinâ?) given voice by the outstanding Bass, Mark Risinger. Muqam. Each movement draws from melodies and rhythms characteristic of various regions of China many centuries ago. CHINESE FOLK DANCE SUITE is available for violin with full orchestra, or as a recital work with piano. Supported by a major commissioning award from the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress, Chinese Folk Dance Suite is written for solo violin and orchestra; it was premiered by The Women’s Philharmonic with violin soloist Terrie Baune, conducted by Apo Hsu, on March 10, 2001, at Yerba Buena Center For the Arts Theater in San Francisco.Inspired by various Chinese traditional folk dances, the suite has three movements:I. Lion Dance. Traditionally, people dance with richly decorated hand-made lions, accompanied by percussion ensemble, to celebrate happy occasions and major festivals throughout the country. In this composition, I use Chinese drum and other percussion instruments in the background, to form a dynamic and rhythmic texture responding to the solo part, which imitates the tunes played on the suona (traditional Chinese trumpet). The pitch materials came from the traditional Guangdong tune “Dragon Boat Racing,†and the Chaozhou tune “Lion Playing Ball.â€II. YangKo. Originating in northern China, this is a major folk dance form in mass performance popularized in the country. In YangKo performance, people play rhythmic patterns on the drums hung around their waists while singing and dancing. In the second movement, I imagined a warm scene of YangKo dancing in distance. The solo violin plays a sweet and gracious melodic line while all members of the orchestra sing non-pitched syllables in different layers as the soft background, to imitate the percussion sound which produces the ever-going pulse.III. Muqam. This large-scale music and dance form, from the Uygur nationality in Xinjiang province, originated in the 15th century. My third movement use a 7/8 meter and the melodic style of Muqam music. The fiery dancing gesture culminates in the sustained climax section at the end of the work, after a colorful violin cadenza in both improvisational singing style and polyphonic writing with woven lines. $26.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Violin and piano SKU: BO.B.3673 Composed by Jordi Cervello. Published by Editorial de Musica Boileau (BO.B.3673). It is a work for violin and piano inspired directly by Paganini's Capriccio No. 13, known as La risata del diavolo and one of the most renowned capriccios from the series of twenty-four composed by the celebrated Genovese violinist and composer. In my version for violin and piano, I have singled out the two essential features of the work: the third notes on a double string that emulate the devil's laughter, and the quick eighth notes that follow, all of it within a light and humorous chromaticism.
Il diavolo begins with a slow and fragmented but suggestive violin cadenza. It then follows the Allegro deciso, built on the two features mentioned above. In the central part, yet another violin cadenza of a similar character but which recalls the devil's laughter more evidently. The Allegro deciso goes on up to a carefree and virtuosic finale.
The work is dedicated to violinist Jesus Reina. $24.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.144407050). UPC: 680160655519. 9 x 12 inches. Celebrating 30 years, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society commissioned a work of 20-25 minutes for violin and piano from James Primosch, University of Pennsylvania professor of music. Primosch had originally thought to create a new sonata, but what developed is more appropriately a set of five character pieces, two of which were directly inspired by poems. Five Poems was premiered in May, 2016, and Primosch's thoughts are recorded at his website: https://jamesprimosch.com/2016/05/10/five-poems-premiere/. Upon receiving a commission from the Philadelphia Chamber MusicSociety for a violin and piano piece in honor of its 30th anniversary, myplan was to write a sonata, a term suggesting a relatively abstractdiscourse. But as the piece developed, the movements struck me ascharacter pieces rather than music employing a more “symphonicâ€approach. When specific poems started to attach themselves in my mindwith two of the movements, the overall title Five Poems became clear. The title of the second movement is a line from Susan Stewart’s“Descentâ€, which deals with Aeneas’s visit to the underworld. The musicis alternately fiercely driving and quite still, though tense. RobertFrost’s Nothing Gold Can Stay summons fleet scale passages framinglyrical counterpoint. The remaining movements do not refer to specificpoems, but have titles reflecting their expressive tone. Dreamscape ismusing with an improvisatory violin line over shifting pairs of pianochords. Nightsong is a bluesy lullaby that turns highly dramatic.Vision begins with a closely argued struggle but breaks through tosomething spacious and clear. $33.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

My second String Quartet was written twenty years after the first, Opus 4 from 1978. The First Quartet is an obsessively contrapuntal work in one movement, which was no doubt influenced by my studies with David Diamond. I had always intended to return to the medium once I left the astringency of my earlier style, but it was only when the National Federation of Music Clubs commissioned a major chamber work, with unspecified instrumentation, to celebrate their 100th Anniversary that I was enabled to do so. The Second Quartet is in four movements: Moderato, Allegro isterico, an Andante theme with 11 variations, and the closing Allegro, which then returns to the tempo of the first movement. An audience member at the premiere told me that she heard echoes of recent tragic events such as the Oklahoma bombing in this work. While I had no such programmatic intent while writing the quartet, it was not an entirely incorrect assessment of the work's intended emotional impact. The quartet is pervaded by a sense of seriousness, even mournfulness. The second movement's scherzo is an aggressively animated piece of musical machinery. The third movement's Variations unfold into a greater variety of moods than the others - but the moments of lyricism are countered by aggressive or ironic outbursts. The final movement's attempt at triumph quickly subsides into a return of the first movement, before being transformed onto a sense of resignation and acceptance as the chromaticism of the opening theme is transformed into a pure and diatonic C-Major. The work received its world premiere by the Shanghai Quartet at the 100th Anniversary Congress of the National Federation of Music Clubs at the Congress Hotel in Chicago on August 19th 1998. Clarinet, 2 violins, viola, cello (Clarinet, Violins (2), Viola, Violoncello) (+)
Clarinet, 2 violins, viola, cello (Clarinet, Violins (2), Viola, Violoncello) SKU: BA.BA08731 Sonate pour la Clarinette avec accompagnement de 2 Violons, Alto and Violoncelle. Erstausgabe. Composed by Giacomo Meyerbeer. Edited by Dieter Klöcker. This edition: urtext edition. Stapled. Barenreiter Urtext. First edition. Score, Set of parts. Duration 13 minutes. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA08731. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA08731). ISBN 9790006506194. 30 x 23 cm inches. Key: E-flat major. This scholarly-critical volume is the first published edition of Meyerbeer's Clarinet Quintet, which vanished in World War ll and only recently resurfaced in the estate of the clarinetist Carl Bärmann. Meyerbeer wrote the piece in Vienna in 1813 for his friend Heinrich Bärmann, a celebrated clarinettist to whom C. M. von Weber also dedicated several works. The extremely novel and virtuoso handling of the clarinet was unusual for its day: Meyerbeer allows it to stand out clearly from the string ensemble and pushes it to the utmost limits of its technique. The Work enriched the meager chamber music repertoire for the clarinet in the 19th century. Our scholarly-critical edition makes this masterpiece available to performers for the first time in print. Besides the musical text, it offers a critical report and a detailed preface discussing the work's genesis. The parts have been given performance markings by Dieter Klöcker.

| Fiddle Dance Suite Violin [Score] Subito Music
Solo Violin SKU: SU.29110060 For Solo Violin. Composed by Wynton M...(+)
Solo Violin SKU: SU.29110060 For Solo Violin. Composed by Wynton Marsalis. Strings, Violin. Unaccompanied. Score. Subito Music Corporation #29110060. Published by Subito Music Corporation (SU.29110060). 1. Sidestep Reel - In 19th Century America, the Afro-Celtic fiddle style was the centerpiece of many a dance. Reels and hornpipes were very popular forms. Their repetitive, even-metered rhythms were easy and fun to dance to, and their infectious singable melodies stayed in the mind and on the tongue. More adventurous fiddlers were given to syncopating on these forms by accenting off beats and by embellishing melodies with oddmetered note groupings. Syncopation is a fundamental rhythmic attitude of jazz and this movement is a celebration of that art. The melodic language is a home-grown concoction of commonality between traditional reels and hornpipes and the Baroque, Ragtime and the quartal concepts of Modern Jazz. 2. As the Wind Goes - the wistful late night song of a lullabye, a campfire song, a ballad...a spiritual. It is sung as if on the wind, yearning to experience once again that which will only ever again live as memory. 3. Jones’ Jig - the Irish Jig, the African 6/8 bell pattern, the shuffle rhythm of jazz and the drum style of Elvin Jones all play around with the relationship of 3 in the time-space of 2. The juxtaposition, negotiation and reconciliation of these opposing rhythmic perspectives create interesting musical relationships all over the globe. 4. Nicola’s Strathspey - In the traditional Strathspey, improvised embellishments, syncopated dotted rhythms and the use of space between notes create expectation, momentum and surprise. These same elements and their effect on the listener are the same in the blues. It seems like a natural marriage. 5. Bye Bye Breakdown - This is good ol’, Saturday night barn dance, hoedown fiddling. It revels in the whining cry of open double stops, in all types of musical onomatopoeia from train sounds to animal calls to country whistling, and in the steady 2/4 rhythm that is as basic as walking. The harmonic framework of several popular fiddle and folk tunes provide a practical grid for the cutting of challenging melodic and rhythmic figures. It is designed to tire fiddler and dancers out. Then we stomp our way home in varying states of delight and disrepair.Solo Violin Duration: 24' Composed: 2018 Published by: Wynton Marsalis (administered by Skayne's Music). $26.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Playing with a teacher or friend helps develop rhythmic independence, intonation, listening skills, and sense of pulse that are vital to playing in an ensemble. These progressive duets offer beginning and developing players the opportunity to play along with others, or with the helpful support of the teacher in a lesson. Each duet adds new techniques and challenges that align with the natural advancement of lessons, moving from easy rhythms and keys to staccato bow strokes, slurs, accidentals (low or extended finger patterns), and more complex or independent rhythms. While the melody remains in the top line, musicians can alternate playing the melody as all efforts have been made to keep both parts at a similar difficulty level. This book features familiar melodies for the holidays, including sacred and secular Christmas songs, music for Hanukkah, and folk tunes from many countries. Appropriate for caroling, recitals, or chamber holiday concerts, there are 30 festive selections of different tempi, styles, and keys for variety, while remaining in string-friendly ranges. Each duet is one page or less in length, ensuring an immediate sense of success for young players. Reviewers, trying to find a label for Godfrey's music, will compare him to Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, even Barber, using words such as lyrical, lush, and always tonal and melodic. 2004 saw the release of an all-Godfrey CD, including String Quartet No. 2, by the Cassatt String Quartet, an album that the New Yorker hailed as one of the 10 best of that year. Formerly available only on a rental basis, String Quartet No. 2 is now available for sale. Real sensual warmth, with a touch of the sensibility of Schoenberg's Transfigured Nightà These very touching works are completely tonal and basically pick up from the point where music was derailed some four score years ago... It is remarkable that music like this is being written, recorded, and widely celebrated. Duration 15 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #114-41626. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114416260). ISBN 9781491101070. UPC: 680160620043. 9 x 12 inches. Adler's milestone String Quartet No. 10 was composed for the Cassatt String Quartet for performance at the Bowdoin International Music Festival's 50th Anniversary season in 2014. Built in a single movement of contrasting sections, Adler's 10th will continue to be featured in upcoming concerts by the Cassatt Quartet, including a performance in Beijing in July. The String Quartet No. 10 was written in 2013 for the 50th anniversary of the Bowdoin International Summer Music Festival and is dedicated to the Cassatt Quartet who premiered the work during the 50th anniversary celebration in July 2014.  The work was written with a generous grant from the Fromm Music Foundation. The 10th String Quartet is in one continuous movement but divided into four sections.  The first section is a slow introduction which presents the basic harmonic material of the entire work.  This is suddenly interrupted by a very agitated movement forming a great contrast to the calm of the beginning.  This rhythmic drive comes to a stop and is relieved by the third section which is a variation of the beginning, but is a bit longer and more developed.  This is followed by the final section which again captures the agitation of the second section and brings the work to a wild and most aggressive end.—Samuel Adler. $46.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
