Three Little Nocturnes was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2005. Commissioned by the Cikada Ensemble, with support from NOMUS, and written for Frode Haltli and the Cikada String Quartet. Programme Note: In the first nocturne a slow, falling music emerges on an irregular pulse, filled with high harmonics in the strings. The second nocturne is fast and unrestful music, with a lot of passion, which in a moment runs into a glimpse of a tango. In this movement the accordion is employed in its traditional fashion, using the chord bass, with its “oom-pah-pah” standard chords. The third nocturne is again slow, indeed very slow, and it has German tempo and expression markings. Thepiece ends with a lullaby in the accordion, played with an unusual technique, imitating the string portato. This is accompanied by high harmonics in the strings, while the first violin slowly and softly plays a melody from the second nocturne. Hans Abrahamsen.

Minna (Vilhelmina Matilda Augusta) von Knorring (1846-1918) was a fascinating character in the musical scene of Helsinki. She had no formal music education, but composed and published nevertheles several songs. Some of them were part of the repertoire of Aino Ackte and Jenny Spennert, the most celebrated Finnish singers of the period. Nocturnal (1998-2001) for Trombone and String Quartet was composed by Bent Sorensen . Progamme note: The two movements of Nocturnal were written with a gab of three years. The last movement, which bears the title The Wings of Night, was commisioned by Warsaw Autumn in 1998, while the first movement - Mondnacht - was commisioned for Ultima Festival in Oslo in 2001. Despite the three years gab, these are not two separate pieces which have been linked together. The sketches for the first movement were begun immediately after the first performance of the second movement in Warsaw 1998. As the title suggests, there is a nocturnal atmosphere in the work. In the first movement weare perhaps in a park and notice the shadows of the clouds passing the bright moon. In the short second movement we are perhaps with Shakespeare's Juliet, calling for love, calling for the night: Come night, come Romeo, come, thou day in night, For thou wilt lie upon the wings of night Whither than snow upon a raven's back. ...perhaps we are elsewhere - at night! Nocturnal was written for Christian Lindberg and the Arditti Quartet and premiered in Oslo in 2001.

Composed between 1973 and 1976, Ainsi la nuit for string quartet is one of the most important works of its genre, by Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013), a French composer. Commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation for the JuilliardQuartet, Ainsi la nuit is based on a series of studies, lasts 18 minutes and is divided into 7 sections: 1. Nocturne 2. Miroir d'espace 3. Lasting 27 minutes, Kalevi Aho’s String quartet no. 4 (2021) is in four movements. The first, Nocturne, begins with a hazily muted melody dominated by the interval of a minor third on the second violin. Though the first movement begins in nocturnal mood, there is also some more forceful music around the middle. The second movement, Allegro capriccioso, is quick with quirky rhythms. At times tempestuous, it faces the players with the biggest technical and virtuoso challenges. The following Largo is slow. A couple of times in the first half it is dominated by soft, mysterious harmonies. The tempo marking of the virtuosic closing movement is Presto, leggiore. The movement begins with quick, flickering, will-o’-the-wisp-like music. It later builds up to an extremely violent climax dominated by tremolo figures on the second violin and thick chords on the other instruments. The flickering music of the beginning returns at the end, before dissolving into silence.
