The Moerae was written for Welcher's long-time friend Robert Freeman, director of the Eastman School of Music (1972 to 1996) and Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin (2000 to 2006). Its premiere was given by the Westwood Wind Quintet with Lisa Bergman (piano), who write, The Moerae, with its interesting instrumentation, fascinating story line, and beautiful melodies, is a true work of art. The Moerae are the three fates who spin the thread of life, measure it, and cut it when they please. The Westwood also recorded the work on their Crystal Records CD790, Fate and Fire.

There is a bit of toccata action in the organ that will require some agility, while the quartet’s part is straightforward— though not without rhythmic or harmonic interest! The piece can also be done by organ alone, or by organ with solo trumpet. The tune by David G. Wilson is also known as ONSLOW SQUARE. Horn in F can be substituted for Trombone I.

Old Time Spirit, a delightfully upbeat composition loosely based on the hymn, Old Time Religion, is also the fight song melody for Henderson State University in Arkansas. Compelling and spirited, the work features soloistic writing, soaring tutti horn lines, and exuberant tutti sections contrasting with a lyrical, reflective, slower section. The work concludes with a restatement of the lively and spirited opening material.
