For the composition of the Christmas Oratorio, Bach made use of the parody method - as he did in other large vocal works as well - that is, he drew upon previously written pieces (here primarily from the Congratulatory Cantatas BWV 213 and 214) and skilfully adapted them to the new text. It is likely that Bach began working on the music during the Advent period of 1734. Besides the first performance which took place during the Christmas season 1734/35, it seems quite probable that other performances were held during Bachs lifetime, since the original, partly autographic performance material discloses traces of frequent use.For the composition of the Christmas Oratorio, Bach made use of the parody method - as he did in other large vocal works as well - that is, he drew upon previously written pieces and skilfully adapted them to the new text.

For this edition, Carsten Klomp has transferred the orchestral movement of the 1st cantata from Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio to the organ. It not only enables a performance with a reduced line-up, but also a tonally appealing and surprisingly coherent rendition of this wonderful music. The way the voices are distributed on the manuals and pedal and the balance between virtuosity and good playability ensure both proximity to the original score and an organ-appropriate implementation. Instead of a simple piano reduction on the organ, this version offers an independent performance option that allows the organ to be used in all of its facets and possibilities. The vocal parts (solos and choir) are identical to the edition of the original version (Carus 31.248/00), so that the piano reduction and choral score can be used.

With the edition of the Christmas Oratorio within the framework of the Stuttgart Bach Editions, Carus presents a scholarly edition for practical performance. The basis for this publication are Bach's autograph score and the original parts. The representative, clothbound volume is supplemented by a study score as well as a choral score, a vocal score and complete orchestral material. In the orchestral material short excerpts containing the conclusions of the secco recitatives are rendered with cue notes in separate vocal systems printed above the score where the instrumentalists pause, thus enabling them make their entrances in the movements which follow these recitatives. This work is also available in carus music, the choir app! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3124800.

In 'Ding Dong it's Christmas' Scottish composer Bruce Fraser makes a sport of misleading his audience time and again. The title already indicates that this piece has been based on the well-known Carol 'Ding Dong Merrily on High', even if the melody makes a somewhat halting start. When it gathers pace, however, also due to the percussion section, suddenly various other carols may be recognized. Peace and quiet reign in the middle part, during which we can enjoy Bach's charming 'O Jesulein süss'. 'Ding Dong it's Christmas' ends in the same way it began, even if more and more Carols put in an appearance. Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
