Bach's cantata BWV 151, whose wonderfully heartfelt opening aria has been rightly numbered among Bach's most inspired ideas (Alfred Durr), was composed for the 3rd day of Christmas 1725. Flute and oboe d'amore lend pastoral coloring to the chamber music sound picture. The oboe d'amore was not originally included in Bach's score; after completing the score he added the part to the orchestra for the first performance. In a later performance about 1728-1731 Bach replaced the flute by a solo violin, adding various performing instructions and ornaments, of which a flautist can make use in his originally rather modest part. This new edition by Klaus Hofmann replaces the 1962 publication by Diethard Hellmann. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3115100.

WithElverskud(The Erl-Kings Daughter), Gade presented his secondsecular cantata for soloists, choir and orchestra, the first having been his successfulComalaOp. 12 (1845/46). The genre was quite popular among his contemporaries. This time, Gade planned to base the work on the text of a folk song. Originally, he had approached Hans Christian Andersen for a text but a collaboration did not materialize. The text Gade ultimately chose for his music was that of a ballad most likely penned by Emil Erslev and Gade himself. A German translation by Edmund Lobedanz was added at a later time. The composition, started in 1851 and finished in March of 1854, soon became an international success and one of Gade's most-performed works. In 1864, the composer made a number of changes to the instrumentation. While the new version was subsequently used for all performances conducted by Gade, the changes were never incorporated into the printed edition of the score. This edition is the first to present this 1864 version.

Since the days of Renaissance composers - beyond accusations of plagiarism - the admiration for a fellow composer has taken the form of quotations from his works or even new versions of his works. No less a work from the classical period than Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation (first performed in 1798), was the basis for the Schopfungsmesse (Creation Mass) by the Salzburg Court and Cathedral Music Director, Luigi Gatti. Gatti heard the oratorio in Salzburg performances conducted by Johann Michael Haydn in 1800. With great skill and sensitivity Gatti was able to underlay the choruses and arias of The Creation with the text of the Mass (at times he reduced and adapted the instrumentation), without doing harm to the admired original. Score available separately - see item CA.2705300.

The Missa pastoralis bohemica (Bohemian Shepherds' Mass), composed in 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba, is the most significant of the so-called Czech Christmas Masses. These are masses in a folkloristic style, in which the individual movements consist of a series of vocal-instrumental scenes in the Czech language; their topic is the birth of Christ and they are performed during the Christmas service. The story is about four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced, whereupon they visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is regarded - even today - as a symbol of Czech Christmas. The present critical edition represents the first edition of the work in its original form and the original keys; it contains a singable alternate text in German. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067800.

Written with developing voices and ears in mind, this partner song setting of the colorful poem The Rainbow is just right for choirs seeking to build harmony-singing skills. Independent yet complementary melodic lines encourage singers to retain their individual parts, while the cascading piano accompaniment subtly reinforces key notes and entrances. A great piece to grow on!

About Jónas HalgrÃmsson (1807-1845) was an Icelandic poet, author and naturalist, who is considered one of Iceland's most renowned poets. Considered a Romantic writer, the strong imagery in his poetry was influenced heavily by the landscapes around him.The imagery, excitement, and curiosity of the universe leapt off the page and the music almost wrote itself. Reflecting on the cosmos and origin of the heavens, the poetry elicits excitement and stirs spatial imagery - ...speeding spark of light, ...wings swifter than wind..., ...I watched the stars...rise from the still stream of heaven... The pure and almost child-like fascination with the universe and its expansion and progression fuels the perpetual rhythm of the work as it continually pushes forward.A good friend asked if I would write a song for her ensemble. The original voicing, for SAB choir, contained parameters in that it had to be three-part with a limited range in the Bass part. With these stipulations I began to write. I searched for something that would be exciting for them and landed on Jonas Halgrimsson’s writings. I believe it is equally as exciting, accessible and challenging for tenor-bass choirs. Director’s NoteTruly consider how the work can come to ‘life’ off the page. Rise and fall with phrase and sometimes each note. The magic exists beyond the ink on the page!Consideration to range, tessitura, and content was all considered as part of this process in creating music that is accessible to all programs and ensembles.Accompaniment NoteThe accompaniment can look intimidating, but please feel free to alter the pulsing eighth notes in the left hand with the eighth notes in the right-hand so it creates a compound rhythm. So long as the momentum of the work is pressed onward, you are doing this work justice.About Jónas HalgrÃmsson (1807-1845) was an Icelandic poet, author and naturalist, who is considered one of Iceland's most renowned poets. Chen Yi’s original A Set of Chinese Folk Songs included ten songs, first arranged for the vocal ensemble Chanticleer to perform with students in the “Singing-in-the-Schools†programs in the 1990's. Taken from a wide range of geographic regions in China, with rich characteristics and expressive contrast, the set has been sung by many choirs around the world in the past thirty years. Three songs from that collection have been thoughtfully arranged into a three-movement suite for intermediate string orchestras, bringing this beautiful Chinese folk music to even more young musicians. The celebratory Fengyang Song is from Anhui province which is popular in the whole country. The lyrical love song Flowing Stream is from Yunnan province in the southwest, and the passionate and vivid Mayila is from the ethnic group known as Kazakhs in the northwest.

The text for the first voicing (SSA) of this piece came to me in the fall of 2020 while teaching at Crosby High School in Crosby, Texas. My students, though enthusiastic to be back in Choir, were struggling to cope with the civil unrest around them, in addition to the pandemic. When considering how I could help them navigate this time, I realized that they were in need of some sort of consistency, of feeling grounded in themselves. As we focused on building of community and citizenship, this text and tune came to mind, each phrase highlighting an element of personal and community wellness.I lead with my spirit keeping love in the circle around me. (Social)Expressing my spirit (Occupational)Loving what I can see and cannot see, I'll take care of the vessel I am in (Physical)I love with me that's under the skin (Emotional)Taking care of my mind (Intellectual)Envisioning the me I want to be (Spiritual)I had the honor of collaborating with composer/educator Saleel Menon to create the beautiful piano accompaniment and SATB setting.Who I Want To Be opens with a solo functioning as a mantra throughout the tune. As the piece continues, voices join in unison and harmony to emphasize the intent. When the repeats in mm. 48–51 occur, invite students to share some of their own mantras and affirmations, or feel free to borrow from the words my students in the Crosby HS choir inspired me to write:Allow yourself graceI am persistentI am fragile, not brokenYou are worthyI am worthyI know that your success is not my demise! The only validation I need is my ownI believe in myselfI see youIt’s okay to not be okayBreatheI love and I am lovedPrepare yourself for not only a powerful performance, but a rewarding experience and conversations with your students.THIS is the piece you want stuck in your students’ heads!~CRM.
