On 13 December 1769 Leopold Mozart and his son Wolfgang set out on their first tour of Italy. It was not until 28 March 1771 that they finally returned to Salzburg. The trip brought the young composer two commissions for opere serie. In March 1770 he was commissioned to write Mitridate, K.87 (74a), for the 1770-71 Carneval season at the Regio Ducal Teatro in Milan. Mozart started work on the opera in Bologna on 29 September 1770, and the premiere duly took place on the Feast of St. Stephen (26 December) in 1770. The second, Lucio Silla (K. 135), again commissioned for the 1771-72 Carneval season in Milan, doubtless resulted from the success of Mitridate. News of the commission reached the Mozarts in March 1771 in Verona, where they had stopped on their return to Salzburg. (At roughly the same time Wolfgang received an invitation from Vienna to supply a serenata teatrale for the wedding of Archduke Ferdinand, the third son of Maria Theresia, scheduled to take place in Milan in October 1771. This invitation ultimately resulted in Ascanio in Alba, K. 111.)

There is considerable evidence to support the claim that the present Adagio in E major is an alternative middle movement intended for the well-known A-major Violin Concerto K. 219. Ultimately, Mozart decided to leave the work (written in 1775) as it was, without change. The violin part of the present edition contains - also in the tutti sections - the upper part of the orchestra, thus leaving it up to the soloist to decide whether he should pause here or join in.From a letter sent by Leopold Mozart to his son, it would appear that Wolfgang Amadeus delivered this Adagio as a single movement to the Salzburg violinist Antonio Brunetti in 1776 after Brunetti found the original middle movement too scholarly..

The Haffner symphony was composed at the request of Leopold Mozart for the celebrations at the ennoblement of Wolfgang’s childhood friend, Sigmund Haffner, in Salzburg on 29 July 1782. Mozart was under considerable pressure at this time with, amongst other professional commitments, preparations for the opening performance of Die Entfühtung aus dem Serail on 16 July, and the necessary arrangements for his forthcoming marriage to Constanze on 4 August. It is unclear from the surviving evidence (the relevant correspondence between Wolfgang and Leopold at this period is incomplete) whether the symphony arrived at Salzburg in time for the Haffner celebrations. The symphony was first performed in Vienna, under Mozart’s direction, at the Hofburgtheater on 23 March 1783 in the presence of the Emperor.

Music in the homes of Vienna's aristocratsFranz Xaver Kleinheinz was employed at the court of Prince Elector Karl Theodor in Munich until 1799, when he left for Vienna after the Prince's death. There he met Beethoven, who was five years younger than Kleinheinz and who also very much admired him, so much so that Beethoven entrusted the young musician with arrangements of his own works. Moreover, Kleinheinz most likely owed it to Beethoven's recommendations that he obtained access to the most prestigious noble homes of the city, where he acquired an outstanding reputation as a piano teacher. This is when he composed the Piano Trio op. 13, which is now being presented in a modern edition. The title page of the sole surviving source - an alternative clarinet part that is unfortunately no longer extant - refers to an edition published in Vienna in 1802.Edition in cooperation with Leopold Mozart Competition, Augsburg.

Soleos was written to a commission of 10th International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart 2019 in Augsburg. It is not by chance that the title containes the words solo and sole, since Soleos represents a musical rendering of the gradual heating up of a star, rising inexorably to maximum effervascence. This work comprises four sections of similar duration. Its inner tension grows continuously up to the middle point of the fourth section, where it is discharged ina a climax. The violin part employs a variety of articulations, such as sul ponticello, ricochet and saltando, as well as murmuring of noise-like effects and playing in the highest possible register. Yet the solo instrument eschews neither cantilena nor virtuosity. In several places, we find distant references to stylistic figures from the music of Leopold Mozart and his era. In this work, I again impart an illusory freedom to the electronic part, which affords the soloist some latitude. I wanted Soleos to be interpreted in such a way that it sounds different each time. Despite the pracise notation, the performer can also find here material from which to create a personal vision of rhis work. [Elzbieta Siora translated by John Comber]. The commissioned work was made possible through the generous support of Forberg-Schneider-Stiftung Recording is available on the wbsite: www.pwm.com.pl/sikora/soleos/index.html.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Salzburg, where Leopold Mozart was Assistant Court Music Director, was a center for polyphonic Offertory settings and multimovement offertory concerti, which developed into a main genre of Catholic liturgical music in the south German region. The Salzburg Cathedral seems an obvious choice, which the solemn orchestration with trumpets and timpani would support. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2728900.

Thekla, the portable piano of the Mozart family, now gathering dust in a dark loft and remembering past - and better - times, has a lot to tell: when Wolfgang made his first composition attempts on the piano and father Leopold made the first great concert tours with Wolfgang and his sister Nannerl in a coach, about the concert performance of the children before Empress Maria Theresia in Vienna (1762), about the trip to Paris and the rough crossing to England, and, finally, about the return to Salzburg in 1766. Mozart is described as a boy who has quite ordinary problems, who gets homesick on his trips and who longs for friendship. In addition, the book gives a short preview of his further musical oeuvre.Numerous - sometimes full-page - pictures as well as an illustrated history of his life paint a colourful portrait of Mozart. With the help of a map, the reader can even follow Mozart's travel route.
