Pietro Mascagnis Cavalleria rusticana ist einer der ersten Vertreter des sogenannten verismo in der Oper. Diese Stilrichtung des spaten 19. In Cavalleria rusticana zeigt sich Mascagni auf einer kompositorischen Hohe, die er zeitlebens nicht mehr erreicht hat.Dieses Buch enthalt neben dem italienischen Textbuch und der gebrauchlichen deutschen Ubersetzung einfuhrende Kommentare von Kurt Pahlen. Er begleitet das musikalische und aussere wie innere dramatische Geschehen der Oper mit Hinweisen zu kompositorischer Struktur und Sinnzusammenhang.
