Georg Kreisler - that's sharp, profoundly dark humor! The Singphoniker have arranged Georg Kreisler's most famous songs for male ensemble and recorded on CD. The corresponding sheet music edition for female choir SSAA with piano accompaniment was published by Schott Music (Georg Kreisler - Lieder und Chansons, ED22736). In addition to this, individual editions of all songs from the sheet music album are available: Pigeons poison in the park brings the relationship between pigeon and human to the point and proposes a funny described, if not ethically correct approach against the pigeon terror. This appealing arrangement with Kreisler's humorous lyrics guarantees a livelyatmosphere in the concert.

The procession of King Renaud Op. 19b is a suite in five parts and is based on tales that originated in southern European folk songs, dating back as far as the 16th century. A large portion of these songs are of the genre “Complaintesâ€, songs in which the text gives a detailed description of events of a generally criminal or macabre character. The first movement of the suite is based on the song La porcheronne (The Swineherd). It tells the story of a young woman forced by her mother-in-law to tend pigs while her husband is away fighting in the war. She is freed only when her husband returns, seven years later. The second movement tells the story of La marquise empoisonnée (The Poisoned Marquise). A marquise is coerced by her king to become his mistress. The jealous queen poisons her by means of a bouquet of deadly scented flowers. Despite having the character of a merry dance, the third movement, La maumariée vengée (The Avenged Bride) tells the touching story of Queen Clotilde, persecuted for her refusal to live according to Aryan beliefs.La belle engloutie (The Swallowed Beauty) relates the tale of the young wife of King Renaud. She cannot imagine a life without her husband, who was mortally wounded in the war, and begs the earth to open and swallow her up so that she may rejoin her love. The gruesome content of the final part, Le tueur de femmes (The Wife Killer), bears a strong resemblance to the tale of Bluebeard. The story is about a young wife in danger of being drowned in a pond by her husband, which is what happened to her 13 predecessors. Thanks to her cunning, she manages to turn the tables and contrive her husband's demise.

Gliere's Two Pieces, Op. 9 is an early work, originally written for double bass with the two movements having been beautifully arranged for Euphonium and Piano by Ralph Sauer. The Intermezzo is lyrical, sensual and Eastern sounding. The Tarantella is a sprightly folk dance of southern Italy. The curious name comes from the wolf spider or Tarantula whose bite is highly poisonous and in earlier times was believed to cause the victims to engage in a frenzied dance. The two movements are about 9.5 minutes in length and are appropriate for advanced performers. The mp3 clip is of Ralph Sauer on Trombone and Mac Booke on Piano.

The title of the piece refers to Lethe, one of the rivers of Hades, known from Greek mythology. The meaning of the world is 'oblivion'; the dead souls were drinking from it in order to forget about their earthly life, whose memories might have poisoned their eternal life. According to tradition, river Lethe also the symbol of time as a dynamically moving, flowing, changing entity. Mate Bella's composition follows this ancent symbolic structure, the flow of this mythical river and its waves in the acoustic space created by the music. The composer prescribes an unusual arrangement of the string orchestra, reminiscent of the polychoral technique of composition of the early Baroque, with larger and smaller groups of performers. To the right and left of the podium sit string quintets (two violins, a viola, a cello and a double bass), while the center is held by a larger string ensemble (eight violins, two violas and two cellos). The musical materials for the quintets are somewhat solistic, but the parts diverge and reunite repeatedly, while becoming shorter or eventually fading out into oblivion. The workings of these resemble the waves of a river, followed by ever smaller ripples and whirls of the surface. The piece was commissioned by the Musica Viva concert series of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. (Janos Malina).

On 20 December 1823 Helmina von Chezy'sRosamundereceived its premiere performance at Vienna's Theater an der Wien. Unfortunately the Viennese version of this drama with ghosts, pirates, attempted poisonings and other horrifying ingredients has not survived - unlike Schubert's popular incidental music which also includes choruses and dances. This music was already highly praised by contemporary critics, with special acknowledgment given tothe genius of this much-loved master. As evidence of its popularity, the overture and theHunters' Chorushad to be encored at the premiere. Now Barenreiter is issuing one of Schubert's best-known compositions in a complete vocal score with piano reduction.
