Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Papillon for solo piano was first published in 1908 by Augener Ltd. Following George Augener's retirement in 1910, the work along with the whole Augener catalogue (which contained no less than 24 other works by Coleridge-Taylor), was aquired by Schott and Co. Ltd. At the time both companies occupied offices on Great Marlborough Street, London. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and brought up in Croydon. He learnt to play the violin, was recognised as a child prodigy and at 15 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford, where he was a contemporary of Holst and Vaughan Williams. Coleridge-Taylor described himself as “Anglo-African” and, despite support from his colleagues, faced racism throughout his whole career. In spite of this prejudice and his tragically early death in 1912 aged just 37, he enjoyed great success during his lifetimeand his music was performed at the Proms no less than 116 times between 1898 and 1939. In contrast, since 1940 his music has only been heard there on thirteen occasions to date. Like many works from this period, at some point in the past Papillon became out of print. Schott Music is now very pleased to present this new modern performing edition with errors and inconsistencies from the original edition now corrected.

The story of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is of a rising star composer, one with a significant gift for melody and a simple lyricism, who embraced the previously unexplored song and dance forms from his father’s native west Africa and incorporated them into his own very European art music. Coleridge-Taylor began playing the violin at age five and by age fifteen wasadmitted to London’s Royal College of Music, where he studied both violin and composition and composed his first works. The simply titled Melody is taken from Three Short Pieces for Organ, a set of pieces originally published in Novello’s Album for the Organ, No. 3 (1898). While certainly typical of the late nineteenth century, many of Coleridge-Taylor's creations display inspiration by African musical elements much like spirituals inspired Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony.

The Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) is committed to cultivating Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access in the international guitar community and in the repertoire published for the instrument. Many factors, including a composer's race, gender, and sexual orientation, have historically created a narrow representation of our community in the classical music canon. For this first volume of the GFA Spotlight Series, the GFA commissioned seven new works by composers of color. The second volume of this series will follow with seven transcriptions of existing pieces by composers of color. These commissioned pieces and transcriptions were premiered by students in the GFA Mentorship Program in 2021.
With this collection, the guitar takes a step towards a more inclusive and representative repertoire that nurtures creativity and inclusion for generations of guitarists to come. Growing the canon enriches the musical experiences of our entire international guitar community through exposure to diverse perspectives and voices, complementing the invaluable lessons we learn from the existing contributions of pieces that form the canon.
