Louis Spohr's technically, extremely demanding concertos have long been part of clarinetists' standard repertoire. Like the first clarinet concerto, this second concerto was composed for the clarinetist Johann Hermstedt, probably in the spring of 1810. Critics praised the concerto at its premiere, stating that it was undeniably one of the most accomplished works of art of its kind. Emphasized was also the great and brilliant treatment of the solo instrument, combined with a very original orchestra accompaniment, where every part, even the timpani, is obbligato. The concerto was even then a great success with the audience. For publication, Spohr supplemented the solo part with various ossia passages as simplifying alternatives. These can of course be found in the score as well as in the piano reduction presented in Ullrich Scheideler's new critical Urtext edition in collaboration with G. Henle Verlag, now for the first time in a reliable edition.

The 40 Studies compiled by Cyrille Rose are still today one of the most used by clarinetists. Adapting major violin studies of the 18th and 19th century, Rose made an excellent choice of technical and expressive materials. The clarinettist Irith Gabriely was inspired by her love of Barbara Heller's Dialogues (for violin and viola) to arrange these duets for two Bb clarinets. The result is a set of varied concertante dialogues that present clarinettists with a few challenges, requiring stamina, breath control, intense and contrasting dynamics, chromatic passages, whole tone passages, sensitive tone production, leaps across wide intervals, fast playing, disciplined rhythmic control and listening to one another closely. In this edition all tempo indications and dynamic markings are intended for guidance: these duets may equally well be interpreted in other ways. This edition therefore also includes a second section where all the pieces are reproduced without such markings, ready for individual interpretation. The Dialogues lend themselves very well to chamber performances; they are also short enough to serve as brief interludesat readings or exhibitions. Their expressive qualities, brevity and range of musical and technical demands make them highly suitable material for youth music competitions. A flute or oboe might well be played with the clarinet as alternative instrumentation for these duets (ED 22017).

Composer Arthur Gottschalk says, Suite Nothings was commissioned by Houston Symphony clarinetist Richard Nunemaker for his Effortless Clarinet Studio. It is dedicated to Michael Perricone, a talented amateur clarinetists and member of Nunemaker's studio, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer just prior to rehearsals for the seventh annual studio recital. Movement 1 ('The March of the Licorice Stick Figures') is a strange little march, at times duple and others compound. Movement 2 ('Weird Harold's Stomp') is a touch more funky, albeit in 13 beat groupings, and owes a partial debt and perhaps apology to jazz legend Herbie Hancock. The final movement is an all-out atonal yet swinging romp, whose theme was originally written for the Band of the First Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, based in Townsville, Queensland. These guys march into battle with full field packs, their weapons, AND their instruments! Hence the title, 'The Royal Australian Regiment Rondo'..
