O Nata Lux is a six-part, a cappella motet. The anonymous tenth-century text is suitable for inclusion throughout the liturgical year. Evoking a deep sense of longing, this contemplative motet would enhance any concert programme of a capella choral music.

What a lovely melody—at once new and familiar! The arrangement is not complicated, but everyone will have to exercise good tuning throughout, especially the two soloists. In the end, any effort you put into the piece will surely be well spent.

This is one of the most moving anthems you will find. Master composer and arranger Lloyd Larson has taken the well-known, but anonymously written, affirmation of faith, “I believe in the sun even when it is not shining,†and set it to music. To complement this beautiful affirmation, he pairs it with one of the most cherished passages in all of Scripture, Mark 9:24. This truly inspired anthem will move your listeners and minister to those who are hurting or dealing with doubt.

Mention the key words Johann Sebastian and Magnificat, and one thinks involuntarily of his well-known Magnificat in D major BWV 243 or in E flat major BWV 243a. However, during the time of his tenure as St. Thomas Kantor, several times Bach also referred back to older settings of the Magnificat text and arranged these for his own purposes. Thus, for the first time it can be documented that in its original version the double choir Magnificat in C major BWV Anh. 30 contained in Bach's music library, which was originally handed down anonymously, was composed by Pietro Torri. Torri was the Music Director at the Court of the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. For performance purposes in Leipzig in ca. 1742 Bach retained the substance of the work but composed additional parts for a 3rd trumpet and timpani. For the first time ever this splendid work appears at Carus in a printed edition. Score available separately - see item CA.3501200.
