The extraordinarily high reputation among Handel's contemporaries of his Passion Oratorio to words by Brockes is indicated by the fact that no less eminent a musician than Johann Sebastian Bach himself made a copy of this work. Although Bach copied it without making substantial changes in it, our edition of the work brings together two of the greatest baroque composers. The Brockes Passion was - not only for the Leipzig Thomaskantor - an alternative to the betterknown Bach Passions. Score available separately - see item CA.5504800.

,I want to make an edition that is not a Koopman interpretation, but contains only that which Handel really wrote.' (Ton Koopman)
ISBN 9790004330883. 9 x 12 inches.
Ton Koopman's new edition of all 16 organ concertos by Handel has drawn to a close. The quality of this edition has been highly praised from all quarters. Source-critical responsibility goes hand in hand with a high level of performance practice when Koopman provides interpretative tips for the ad libitum passages in the organ part without restricting the creativity of the interpreter who is interested in stylistic matters and prefers to work out his own solutions. I want to make an edition that is not a Koopman interpretation, but contains only that which Handel really wrote. Nevertheless, there are occasional performance suggestions in small print which are elucidated in the Critical Commentary. (Ton Koopman in Concerto) Koopman offers a basically unmarked text, thus leaving the performance details up to the performer. Especially note-worthy is the clear printing, extensive preface and detailed Critical Notes. (Katholische Kirchenmusik) Whoever wishes to hear the entire Koopman edition on CD can look forward to the new recording by Christian Schmitt and the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester (Brilliant Classics). This is the first recording for which all 16 new Koopman editions were used as the basis for the performance.

The second volume continues with 43 compositions for the time of Holy Lent and Easter. For this time of year the new hymnal Gotteslob contains a great number of new songs. Therefore more than 20 pieces are commissioned renditions for this edition - for many songs they are even the first chorale arrangements overall. The collection presents some previously unknown pieces between baroque and present times. The pieces are quite easy to learn and take between two and five minutes playing time and are particularly suitable for the recessional and for the communion.

This anthology presents organ, harpsichord and piano concertos - the majority not hitherto published in modern editions - by Handel's contemporaries and successors, including works by Felton, Cooke, William Hayes, Arne, Chilcot, Philip Hayes, Hook, Rush, Stanley, Charles Wesley, Crotch, Samuel Wesley and Russell, from among the 200 examples surviving from the period c.1740-c.1815. Among the most versatile genres of the time, it found popularity in pleasure garden, theatre, concert room and the home. The contents of this volume show the form adapting well to the stylistic evolutions of the period from late Baroque via continental gallant styles to a mature Classical style, though retaining a strong native tradition linked with Handelian oratorio in the idiomatic distinction between virtuoso piano concerto and concertos for organ.

The Complete Chorales are an Urtext edition of all four-part chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach and the new standard in editing for this genre. Musicologist Thomas Daniel, a well-known specialist for the topic of Bach chorales, divided the chorales in two parts of about equal length: Chorales from cantatas, motets, and passions that were confirmedly written by Bach are found in the first part, while the second part includes chorales from later sources and printings, e.g. the four-volume edition published by Breitkopf in 1784 to 1787. Thereby, the authentic chorales are clearly separated from the chorales of partly dubious authorship for the first time. Drawing on new sources, e.g. from the archive of the Berliner Sing-Akademie, some settings can even be attributed to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - contrary to his claim in the preface of the Breitkopf edition that all songs were created by my dear late father. The volume includes an informative preface and a separate introduction on the edition for both parts while giving editorial remarks for each chorale for the first time, directly below the score. Additionally, it provides helpful indices that allow searches for text incipits, BWV numbers, melody composers, and lyricists.Get an insight into our material with the reading sample. In the Download section, you can also find a concordance to the previous edition. This is a treasure trove of fine music, beautifully presented and intelligently edited. [...] It will become my reference for Bach chorales. (Jeremy Summerly, Choir & Organ)All four-part chorales by Bach in an Urtext edition for the first time. Authentic chorales clearly separated from those of dubious attribution. New insights on the authorship of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

The Missa Beatissimae Virginis Maria was composed ca. 1758-1760, between the end of his tenure as a singer in the choir of St. Stephen's in Vienna and the beginning of his first position as violinist and music director for the Bishop of Grosswardein. The scoring of SATB (for soli as well as choir) and church trio was augmented by two trumpets (clarini) and timpani, as well as two trombones. The latter instruments double the alto and tenor voices in tutti passages but in the Et incarnatus est they are also employed in an obbligato role. On the one hand, as an early work this Mass is in the style of the festive baroque tradition, as practiced in south-German regions until the middle of the eighteenth century; on the other hand it already shows the subjective inspiration which distinguished it from many of the mass settings by Haydn's contemporaries. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5030500.

The composer Johanna Senfter (1879 1961) from Oppenheim concerned herself with chamber music for strings all her life, even studied violin in Frankfurt herself. Max Reger then gave her lessons in Leipzig, first privately, then in his composition class at the conservatoire and valued her 'extraordinary compositional talent'. The strict teacher more and more became a committed promoter of the works by Johanna Senfter. For a period of 50 years, the composer concerned herself with the string quartet genre, from Quartet No. 1 in D minor Op. 4, composed shortly after the turn of the century, to the sixth and last Quartet in C minor Op. 115 which was performed for the first time in 1960, one year before her death. The Quartet in F sharp minor Op. 28 is her second quartet which was premiered in Darmstadt on 5 November 1922. In this work, as in later works, Senfter combined traditional form models - here Baroque movements like gavotte, saraband, gigue - with expressive, late Romantic musical language. The work, consisting of six short movements, may without doubt be regarded as a valuable addition to the quartet repertoire.

A ricercar is an instrumental work that was popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Jeremy Kempton's stirring Ricercar for Sonorous Instruments harkens back to the Venetian splendor of the Gabrielis who epitomized the Glory of Venice at its height. This 3 minute work is in A-B-A form beginning with a fanfare-like Allegro that gives way to a contrasting lyrical section which seems to almost melt away. The piece then returns to the opening Allegro and a hall-ringing conclusion. This work is appropriate for advanced performers.
