Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen 3 EPIGRAMS'3 Epigrams' (1963) came into existence following my piece for chamber orchestra 'Chronos' (1962). My purpose with these pieces (and others of the same period) was to explore the sound experiences of serialism in space and time but without using the original and fundamental substance of serialism - the tone row. The chromatic space was constituted by four identical and complementary tone columns (established by transposition). The time was divided into 25 different sizes, plasticly conceived and graphically notated. These distances were then divided in 25 new distances in the same proportions etc ... into smaller and smaller durations completely hierarchally carried through. This time division, 'rhythm', de-termines the gradual or sudden shifts from one tone column to another. The 3 Epigrams became a little play of my own with this material and the work is, therefore, quite clear to read and easy to play - a kind of bagatelle, really.I am now afraid that a classic situation is emerging: If this programme note is any longer it will take more time to read this than it will take to play the three pieces.Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen.

Texts: Latin and EnglishPublisher: Boosey & HawkesDifficulty level: 3The Ceremony of Carols is one of Britten's best-known and most-performed works. It is a brilliantly conceived and dramatic concert work which sees the voices process to their places singing unaccompanied plainsong and, at the end, processing out again to the same chant. These movements can also be accompanied but strictly only if the voices do not process. The final Alleluia can be repeated as many times as necessary to get the singers to and from their destination. The carols are for three-part children's voices (though, of course they can be sung by female adults as well) and they form a two-part work around a central Interlude for harp which is based on the plainsong from the Procession. Variety is the key word here as all the carols have such individual identities. The forthright Wolcum Yole!, the deliciously lyrical There is no Rose, the swinging Balulalow, the fiery and dramatic This little Babe all contribute to a work which is a feast of discovery throughout. Lovely solos and duos add further colour and the harp part, an inspired choice of accompaniment, enriches, colours and surrounds the voices with its pictorial musical imagery. If anything shows Britten's genius for writing for voices it must be this work. The challenges here are in creating a real equality between voice parts, fielding a confident pair of soloists, and making the most of the wonderfully colourful poems Britten has chosen to set. Pronunciation is not really an issue, but when I recorded this work with the Finzi Singers I decided to follow the example of Sacred and Profane and use authentic medieval pronunciation for which an expert coach was necessary. It brings an added element of colour to a familiar aural experience.Duration: 22 minutesPaul Spicer, Lichfield, 2011.

This major work is an affirmation of assurance that takes us on a musical and spiritual pilgrimage through the beloved 23rd Psalm. Singers and listeners will be carried from peaceful meadows to the shadowed valleys, and from the fragile hope of faith, to life everlasting. A work of scope and substance, Psalm 23 - A Journey with the Shepherd gives directors a wonderful opportunity to program outside the seasonal box. A glorious orchestration by Michael Lawrence decorates the expressive choral writing with color and a theatrical sweep. Songs include: We Are Not Alone; The Lord Is My Shepherd; Restore My Soul; Lead Me on the Paths of Righteousness; Though I Walk through the Valley; You Comfort Me; My Cup Overflows; We Are Not Alone (reprise); Surely Goodness and Mercy. The text of this lush tune emphasizes the universal message - finding the sacred in the present moment - that is appropriate not just during a particular season, but every day of the year. Gorgeous with or without the optional oboe or orchestra.

From Judas Maccabeus comes a sacred reworking of one of Handel's most beloved melodic creations. Adapted for use at Christmas, the score overflows with a Baroque elegance, ideal for a holiday concert or worship service. Its brief performance time (under two minutes) makes it a wonderful call to worship. The accompanying chamber orchestration keeps in the style and delivers a sparkling option for churches with string resources. Bravo! This hymn-anthem is based on a new tune of the composer's own devising. The 1806 text is given a lyrical treatment rather than the usual rollicking one, and the result is expressive and effective. The first stanza is in unison, the second split between TB and SA alternating. The third stanza is set for SATB voices. The fourth and final stanza has lower voices in unison and sopranos descanting. Duration: 4:10.

Reviewers, trying to find a label for Godfrey's music, will compare him to Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, even Barber, using words such as lyrical, lush, and always tonal and melodic. 2004 saw the release of an all-Godfrey CD, including String Quartet No. 2, by the Cassatt String Quartet, an album that the New Yorker hailed as one of the 10 best of that year. Formerly available only on a rental basis, String Quartet No. 2 is now available for sale. Real sensual warmth, with a touch of the sensibility of Schoenberg's Transfigured Nightà These very touching works are completely tonal and basically pick up from the point where music was derailed some four score years ago... It is remarkable that music like this is being written, recorded, and widely celebrated. Robert Reilly, Surprised by Beauty: A Listener's Guide to the Recovery of Modern Music (Ignatius Press).

Venezian version The Laudate pueri was composed between 1735 and 1749 for the Ospedale degl'Incurabili in Venice. Since the Ospedale was an institution for the musical training of gifted girls and young women, the vocal parts are scored for female voices. As Director of Music at the Saxon-Polish Court of Dresden, Hasse was also responsible for church music, and therefore he arranged works which were originally written for the Ospedale.. Now that the Dresden version has already been published in the Hasse-Werk-Ausgabe, the original composition is printed here for the first time. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4070000.

Homilius is known for having always searched for new forms in order to avoid any schematic pattern. Thus, one looks in vain in the present cantata for arias. The opening choir is introduced by two choral groups: One calls to take up the fight against the devil, while the other fearfully hesitates and finally, in the chorale Jesus Christus, wohn uns bei agrees to join in. Following each of the three stanzas of the embellished chorale, in a recitative the hesitant one is given courage before he also takes up arms, in a confident final chorus.
