The Cat's Meow is straight-ahead swinger in the same vein as Benny Golson's classic Killer Joe. The melody is a very simple riff that repeats at different levels over the course of the form. The cat who inspired the tune is a furry exotic Persian named Berlioz who took up residence in the composer's house. Like most cats, his life consists mainly of eating and sleeping. He most often resides at the top of the stairs, and never bothers to try to get out of the way.

Basie's Blues is a rousing medium tempo big band chart which also functions as a Basie-style piano feature. Arranger Russell Schmidt has crafted a unique three-horn harmonization (plus optional flute and clarinet) of the main theme, giving this piece a very distinctive sound. In addition to solo space for the pianist, there is a bass solo (although this solo can easily be moved to another instrument, if desired). Basie's Blues is based on one of the easiest etudes from Jim Snidero's Easy Jazz Conception Series.

Introduce your band and audiences to a little 2-beat and some jazz history with this easy to prepare arrangement of this great jazz standard. Originally a ragtime piano piece, That's-A-Plenty is most commonly associated with Dixieland music. This arrangement now makes it available to jazz bands at the medium-easy level. There's lots of fun for all the sections, including some smeared notes for the bones and some short solis for the saxes. The drummer gets some tom-tom work a la Gene Krupa, and while there are no improvised solos, one (or all) of the trumpets gets to do a written out call and response solo back and forth with the rest of the band. This one is a guaranteed crowd pleaser!
