The piece, commissioned by Eszter Lazar and the Hungarian Radio, was composed in 1995 on occasion of the 50th anniversary of Bela Bartok-s death. Its world premiere was held on 1 October in the Hungarian Radio, performed by Janos Fejervari.The fantasy-like one-movement composition resembles the structure of classical sonatina. Study is an important piece of contemporary viola music and deserves to be a significant part of not only international concert repertoire, but also of academic level music education.This edition has been supported by the Board of Music Publishing of the Hungarian Composers- Union.

This small suite of three solo pieces was written for violist Deborah Lander, a member of the Sydney Alpha Ensemble, which recorded Kats-Chernin's first portrait CD Clocks for ABC Classics in 1997. The first piece turns out to be a “classical†ragtime in which theabsence of the accompanying piano with its chords and alternating basses is never noticed. The second piece on the open D string flows meditatively in quiet triple time. The third piece is a solo variation of Elena Kats-Chernin's big “hitâ€, the beautiful Eliza Aria from her ballet Wild Swans. The three interludes can be included in a programme individually or together, in any order.

Géza Szilvay's Kreutzerini, here adapted for viola by David Banney, consists of 42 finger exercises for perfect intonation in the first position. These mini-studies were created to make learning and teaching ear-led finger-stopping movements even more effective and enjoyable with inventive and resourceful use of natural harmonics and left hand pizzicatos. Kreutzerini is a supplementary material for the Colourstrings Viola ABC Book B (ISMN 9790550112537), but it can be used independently as well.

This piece is commissioned by the 2nd Tokyo International Viola Competition for the second round which will take place from 26 May to 3 June 2012 in Tokyo. The work is dedicated to the numerous victims of the Tohoku Earthquake on 11 March 2011. The composer chose the sound of the viola as an expression of his prayer for these victims.

Scent Dance II for viola solo is based on the version for cello from 2010. The virtuoso work was inspired by Xuntian Hes poem Passing by the Earth, in which the author asks about the meaning of life in the face of his finiteness. The version for viola solo was written on the occasion of the 20th Viola Space Festival in Tokyo 2011.
