This work for violin and piano by Martin Bresnick is a play on the words suite and bittersweet. Each of the four movements is based on a Yiddish folk song, which in English translate to On the Road, My Resting Place, Black Cat, and Dona, Dona. Each of the four pieces is primarily based on a Jewish folk song, but re-envisions them in a modern context, akin to Bartok and Kodaly. The composer noted, I found it a very challenging, yet touching way to remain in contact with some part of my own past that I don't usually reveal. The title references the difficult (bitter) and pleasant (sweet) aspects of experiencing the tumultuous history of a people through their folk music. This work for violin and piano by Martin Bresnick is a play on the words suite and bittersweet. In 1929 Sibelius sent some small pieces to the New York publisher Carl Fischer for consideration. Included among these was the Suite for Violin and String Orchestra, to which he had assigned the opus number 117. The Suite for Violin and String Orchestra represents the culmination point in a series of works written for violin and orchestra which started with the serenades op. 69 and continued with the Six Humoresques opp. 87 & 89. Together these works bear witness to the composer's deep insight into the instrumental possibilities of the violin. In these works, more limited in formal scope than the Violin Concerto though they be, the voice of the solo violin - Sibelius' second mother-tongue - unites with the orchestral writing of a mature and experienced symphonist. The reduction and solo part are published together for the first time. ---.

The Pytheas Center for Contemporary Music notes: Talma was the first woman to receive two Guggenheims, the first woman elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters (1974), the first American woman to have a full-scale opera performed in Germany, the first American to teach at Fontainebleau, and the first woman to receive the Sibelius Medal for composition. This is only the highlights of a long life of composing. Talma spent a good amount of time at the MacDowell Colony, where she wrote many of her finest works, including the Violin Sonata. Having studied composition with Nadia Boulanger over 17 summers in her youth, Talma dedicated the Sonata to her former teacher and long-time friend on the occasion of Boulanger's 75th birthday. The single movement reflects Talma's style in 1962, with more than a passing nod to 12-tone construction. For advanced performers. Duration: 16'.

Odd Moments was written for the Da Capo Chamber Players in 1999 in celebration of George Perleas 85th birthday. The piece was revised in 2009, resulting in a version that is a few minutes shorter. The title of the piece obliquely refers to Perleas late piece Critical Moments, and also to an aspect of Perleas system of 12-tone tonality, which distinguishes between odd and even harmonies. The piece is in six short sections, each with its own tempo. A slight pause should be taken before each section. A A A The score is in C. Accidentals apply only within the measure, and cautionary accidentals have been added, as needed. These chamber compositions of Anthony Iannaccone (born 1943) are refined, musicianly, and intellectually honest. Rituals, for violin and piano, is an extended composition skillfully fashioned and adroit in its adaptation of characteristic 'gestures' of the virtuoso recital piece. In Iannaccone's hands these 'gestures' are transmuted into something personal, while retaining, for the listeners' sake, the general shape of familiar territory. The blend of old and new, alternating between broadly lyrical and dramatic, adds up to a satisfying musical experience. --From the American Record Guide.

The day that Australian and New Zealand forces joined the Allies for an invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula of Turkey in World War I, with disastrous consequences, is celebrated in Australia as Anzac Day (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps). To honor this special day, Bresnick takes inspiration from two selected poems by Bertolt Brecht (And I Always Thought and Legend of the Unknown Soldier Beneath the Triumphal Arch). Commissioned to commemorate Australia’s Anzac Day, similar to Memorial Day, and inspired by two Brecht poems…The somber opening violin and clarinet lines unfolded to haunting effect before eventually reaching a fervent climax. --Vivien Schweitzer, The New York Times.

Angles for Piano Trio plays with a variety of textures and timbres that can be produced on the piano. Each of the four movements takes a different textural or procedural angle. The first movement, With Pluck, uses a lot of pizzicato in the strings, with virtually no use of the pedal in the piano. The second movement, Take a Bow, uses extensive double stops in the strings. The third movement, About a Minute Waltz, is percussive and rhythmic, and the last movement, A Sad Song, contrasts repetitions of a straightforward lyrical stanza with rhapsodic interludes.
