This set of chorales was written to embrace a wide range of musical concepts, allowing directors multiple opportunities for working on ensemble sound, intonation, and phrasing. Each chorale includes various tempo and dynamic markings, while additional elements (such as fermatas) are introduced throughout. These chorales will work in a variety of situations - from beginning band (the first chorales use only 6 notes) to accomplished middle school band. Two mallet parts are included - an easier part and a more advanced part that includes multiple notes and rolls. In addition, an auxiliary percussion part is included so students may secure proper techniques on triangle, suspended cymbal, and crash cymbals. Finally, the piano part is useful for directors wishing to either supplement the ensemble or assist during singing.

Teaching suggestions are included for each chorale. Several applications and techniques are provided, along with further possibilities for more advanced groups. Certainly, varying techniques may be applied to each chorale. Directors are encouraged to diversify for fresh and interesting rehearsals.

Spirit of Endeavour is a virtuosic piece of music with a positive musical message. It tells the story of a wind band embracing hard work, friendship, musical excellence, love, marriage and birth, as well as the sad loss of cherished members. Composer Philip Sparke decided to salute the history of the Canadian concert band 'Harmonie de Charlesbourg' with a work that falls into two contrasted sections. One Vision deals with forming the band and the subsequent united desire to create an ensemble espousing the idea of musical perfection. The Pursuit of Excellence salutes the 20 years of hard work of the wind band. This concert work ends with a chorale of thefull band, symbolising the fulfilment of a united dream!

Het werk weerspiegelt het verhaal achter de Harmonie de Charlesbourg vanaf het begin in 1993. Dat verhaal kent vele facetten en behelst verschillende aspecten van het menselijk bestaan: hard werk, vriendschap, het streven naar muzikale schoonheid, liefde, huwelijk en geboorte, maar ook het droevige verlies van gewaardeerde leden. Componist Philip Sparke besloot dit alles weer te geven in twee contrasterende delen: het eerste, One Vision, verklankt Francois Dorions vooruitziende blik bij de oprichting van het orkest en de daaropvolgende wens om een ensemble te creeren dat het ideaal van muzikale perfectie zou omarmen. Het tweede deel, The Pursuit of Excellence, is een odeaan twintig jaar van grote inspanningen waardoor de Harmonie de Charlesbourg de nagestreefde doelen heeft kunnen bereiken: inmiddels neemt het orkest een trotse plaats in binnen het muziekleven van Quebec.

Cette histoire aux multiples facettes embrasse tous les aspects de la vie humaine : le travail, l'amitie, l'excellence musicale, l'amour, lemariage et la naissance, ainsi que la perte douloureuse de membres aimes.

A New Beginning begins with a beautiful and sensitive chorale shaping the musical ideas. This chorale builds up to a fast and rhythmical setting, creating a vivid and spectacular feel, with lots of percussion. The instrumentation is versatile and colourful, which makes the piece very pleasant to play and work on for each instrumental group within the band. The music slows down again in the finale, but in a maestoso style. This leads onto a dramatic and impressive ending!

Dit werk van Satoshi Yagisawa begint met een prachtig, gevoelig koraal dat de mogelijkheid biedt om muzikale ideeën vorm te geven. Het koraal mondt uit in een snel, ritmisch gedeelte dat levendig en spectaculair klinkt, met veel slagwerk. De instrumentatie is veelzijdig en kleurrijk, waardoor het werk leuk is om te spelen en te repeteren voor elke sectie in het orkest. De langzame finale, in een maestoso stijl, eindigt in een luisterrijk en indrukwekkend slot!
