Composed in both traditional and blended choral stylings, this cantata weaves the historic symbolism of both the Lion of Judah and the Lamb of God into the Christmas story. Through original songs and traditional carols, singers and listeners are reminded that this story is not just an event in history, but a living story that still impacts the world today. Narration, solos, congregational participation and optional children's voices, along with gorgeous orchestrations by Keith Christopher, all work together to make this service a time of both celebration and worship. Songs include: Overture/Sing Christmas!; And So We Wait; It Came upon a Midnight Clear; Who's the Little Baby?; Sleep Little Lion, Sleep Little Lamb; Where Is Peace Tonight?; In This Moment; Angels from the Realms of Glory; Carol of the King. Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning ‘Lion City’. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Roaring fun!

This work was commissioned by Eurofestival. Ever since antiquity, mankind has been fascinated by the lion: symbolising courage, strength and temperance. Many have made use of the lion to represent themselves in symbols and emblems. In five movements the composer describes both the history of the lion throughout centuries, as well as the characteristics. A challenging idea to turn into music! The final movement ‘King of Kings’ is extremely spectacular. A great choice for thematic concerts or as a main piece in your concert or contest.

This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871.
