This new, completely revised and reset centenary edition of Satie’s complete piano music in three volumes has returned to Satie’s manuscripts and first editions to give pianists completely accurate and reliable texts to play from.As well aspresenting every piece for piano solo or piano reduction that Satie published, this edition also includes some previously unknown pieces, like the Petite Sonate that he wrote for Vincent d’Indy at the Schola Cantorum, as well as some interestingfirst versions of well-known pieces, like San Bernardo, a trial version of Españaña (1913) and the markedly different first version of Les Pantins dansent (1914). In addition, there areexamples of the different types of exercises that Satie completedat the Schola between 1905 and 1912, some extra trial Enfantines, and some earlier drafts of his famous Sports et divertissements. To help pianists, suggested metronome marks have been added throughout, and there are also some performance suggestionsfor the Rose Croix pieces of the 1890s, which otherwise appear to be all quiet and slow. The notation has been made as user-friendly as possible, without detracting from Satie’s concerns about the “extériorisation†of his musical thought in print.

An unknown work from the so-called Buckeburger Bach, which at first was ascribed unjustly to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The story of the Suffering of the Lord is examined from a different perspective. Pilgrims have undertaken a journey to the Holy Land and when they arrive they are informed by a hermit of the suffering and death of Christ. An additional figure, an angel, lends this representation of the Passion a heightened form for communicating the importance of the suffering of Christ.

The musicologist Helmut Lauterwasser, staff member of the Repertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM) in the work group located at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, recently discovered two choral pieces for men's voices by the young Johannes Brahms: Des Postillons Morgenlied (text by Wilhelm Muller) and Goldne Bruecken (text by Emanuel Geibel).Brahms presumably wrote Des Postillons Morgenlied as early as 1847 at the age of 14. The piece is thus the earliest of all of Brahms' transmitted works. Goldne Bruecken was perhaps written for a concert given in Celle in early May 1853. Brahms dedicated the two works to the men's choral society of that town. When he later tried to collect the non-published early works in order to destroy them, he apparently forgot the Celle pieces. The previously unknown copies had been preserved in the estate of the Alte Celler Liedertafel. Their authenticity has since been confirmed by the Brahms Complete Edition in Kiel. The Chorus of the Bayerischer Rundfunk gave the first performance and the world- premiere broadcast of the pieces in its BR-KLASSIK program on 5 March 2010.

Sibelius orchestral works rediscovered It was a minor sensation when in 1996 the conductor Osmo Vanska recorded a completely unknown, more than 20-minute-long orchestral work by the young Jean Sibelius in Lahti: Skogsraet (The Forest Nymph) had suddenly re-emerged. But this was no mere rediscovery, since in his later years, Sibelius had graciously agreed that his early work could be performed in a radically abridged form. He thus left his score in a rather confusing condition. Varsang (Spring Song), the second work in this volume of the Complete Edition, has two (or even three?) early versions, which makes for a most complicated source examination. Tuija Wicklund thus faced a mountain of problems in preparing the edition. The editor's meticulous work ultimately yielded three complete orchestral scores from the years 1894/95, thus from a period in which no one can claim that such pieces are early works. By this time, Sibelius had already made a name for himself in Finland with his first masterpieces Kullervo (1892), En saga (first version, 1892), the Karelia Suite (1893) and Rakastava (1894).

This previously-unpublished Concerto a Quadro presumably started life as a concerto for the standard Baroque forces of flute, strings and continuo, now otherwise unknown; it is preserved in its surviving form for flute, violin, viola and cello in a set of manuscript parts apparently copied by an amateur musician in Sweden. Although unlikely to be the work of Handel, as a rare early example of music for flute quartet it is an attractive extension to a repertoire otherwise dominated by the works of Mozart and his contemporaries. In the present publication, editorial figuring in the cello part allows for the possibility of expanding the texture with additional continuo instruments.

This motet, no matter how popular it is, presents Bach scholars with a few puzzles: is it really by Bach? Somehow the text doesn't fit with the notes, at least not so that it's comfortable to sing. And is the musicologists' problem the same for the choral singers? Not, of course not in the Alleluia fugue: in that, there really is something to worry about ... year of composition unknown. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3123000.

This collection of oboe music, written by living composers, is an invaluable resource for any oboist of Grade 8 and conservatoire standard who is curious about widening their repertoire, and exploring the various languages of modern music. The term modern music can alienate many minds who may think it will be too difficult technically; aurally unknown and therefore unsatisfying; harmful or damaging to their musical sensibility. To all these points this volume has the answers. Every one of these pieces requires challenging technical skills demanded of any of the more traditional oboe repertoire, and additionally they will improve technique. Each piece portrays a characterand language that is approachable and compelling. Far from damaging musical sensibility these musical types will open the ear and enrich the spirit. Some are physically demanding and require very good breath control, others need patience in learning new fingerings and timbres, and some travel to extreme registers. But, in all cases, the effort will be rewarding, and not only that, the knowledge gained about the oboe and how it works will be equally entertaining and stimulating.

Goethe, who studied in Leipzig between 1765 and 1768 (a period he wrote about in Dichtung und Wahrheit), was friends there with a young man of his age, Bernhard Theodor Breitkopf, the grandson of the publishing house's founder. Breitkopf set his friend's first poems to music in the style of the day. The Neue Lieder und Melodien came out for the 1770 Leipzig spring fair, though without any mention of the poet, still completely unknown at that time. The title Goethes Leipziger Liederbuch dates only from 1932, when Gunter Raphael prepared a new edition for the Goethe commemorative year. Since several poems from the Neue Lieder are found in highly altered forms in later work collections, this publication of Goethe's first poems is also of great value to literary scholars.Goethe, who studied in Leipzig between 1765 and 1768 (a period he wrote about in Dichtung und Wahrheit), was friends there with a young man of his age, Bernhard Theodor Breitkopf, the grandson of the publishing house's founder.

The Caprice d'Adieu (autograph unknown) is appended to Eduard Eliason's Six Caprices Caractéristiques pour le Violon, Op. 12, which was published in Mayence by B. Schott in 1833. This piece, which Paganini dedicated to Eliason, is part of a series of compositions for violin solo that have been widely ignored by both performers and scholars of the great Genoese musician. It is a composition whose size and structure (A-B-A, with two refrains) follows the pattern of some of his Capricci, Op. 1, but, unlike these proper studies, the Caprice d'adieu is lighter and more lively in character. Although not as brilliant, musically, as the Capricci, it still contains some original musical ideas, mostly articulated in two parts with a few complex technical passages and a central, contrasting section featuring different dynamics and a range of chords and trills. This critical edition is based on the first edition and is collated with the most important nineteenth and twentieth-century editions.

Look up the word Gizmo, and you will find references to its origin in the slang used by United States Marines and Navy personnel when referring to a gadget of unknown origin or design. Ralph Ford's inventive work for your first-year players uses a ratchet in the percussion section to musically depict a gizmo. Great fun! (1:30) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Volume 15 reveals a largely unknown treasure of the romantic song for voice with piano accompaniment in which his complete 100 solo songs with opus numbers are united in one collection. The musical spectrum ranges from the naive-witty Kinderlieder op. 152 to the highly dramatic setting of Des Madchens Klage op. 57,7 from Schiller's Wallenstein. Among the authors of these poems Rheinberger's scarcely-known contemporaries are represented, just as are the great names of German literature, including Goethe, Eichendorff, and Scheffel. English and Italian poets are also represented (Burns, Moore, Petrarca, Savonarola).

In English-speaking countries ‘Away in a Manger’ is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words, which makes it easy to understand. The song is also known as ‘Luther’s Cradle Hymn’. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers, however, this is a misconception the author is unknown. In England ‘Away in a Manger’ is sung to a different melody than in the USA, for example. The ‘English’ melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick. Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the ‘English’ melody, which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.

The image of a path not taken may evoke a sense of mystery and excitement at the unknown, as well as the satisfaction of following our own individual path in life - a unique journey different from all others. This engaging work for band follows an arc of emotions ranging from the eager anticipation at the start of a journey; frustration and doubt as the path becomes more difficult and perilous; then elation and joy as the goal is reached and our dreams are realized.
