This piece was commissioned by Oyama City Symphonic Wind Orchestra to commemorate their 30th Anniversary. The composer was inspired by Oyama City’s slogan, ‘water, green and earth’, to write this festive fanfare. Following a gentle opening a fanfareleads to a magnificent chorale. This turns into a quickly moving energetic section with irregular rhythm. This is a short but dramatic piece that will make a brilliant concert opener.

The Okefenokee Swamp is slated as one of the seven natural wonders of Georgia. The name has two different meanings: first being bubbling waters, and the second meaning Land of Trembling Earth, so named because the peat bog (land) moves when you walk on it, because it is actually floating on water. Although the Oconi are the earliest known inhabitants, this piece is written to honor the Chehaw Indians who gave the swamp its name. The beginning of the piece depicts the grandeur of the over 438,000 acre swamp (one of the five largest swamps in the world). The middle section has a flute solo that depicts the primitive life of the early inhabitants. For a more authentic portrayal, the use of a recorder, especially an alto recorder should be used. The piece ends with a spirited dance, beginning with the thunderous roll of the timpani and bass drums. The Okefenokee Swamp is slated as one of the seven natural wonders of Georgia. It celebrates our beautiful Earth, the skies above us, and the joy of loving one another. This flexible arrangement allows ensembles to perform the work with as few as nine musicians providing accessibility and flexibility for numerous instrumentation needs, while still allowing a full ensemble sound. *The posted recording is based on the full band scoring but aligns with the suggested preferences for either woodwinds/strings or brass suggested in the score.

Fresh from the loss of his oldest daughter Maria Mahler, and knowing he had a serious heart condition, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) crafted Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) in the years 1908 and 1909. The first performance took place on November 20, 1911 at the Tonhalle in Munich, conducted by Bruno Walter. It encompasses six settings of old Chinese poems, four of them by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, loosely translated into German by Hans Bethge. Conscious of his own mortality, Mahler filled his orchestral song cycle with themes of resignation, fading beauty, and autumn loneliness. The last song, roughly the same length as the previous five movements combined, serves as a sprawling, yet deeply personal farewell to both love and life. Instrumentation: 3(3rd dPicc)+Picc.3(3rd dEH).2+BCl+Eb.3(3rd dCBsn: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(4-5): 2Hp.Clst.Mand: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Soli T, A (or Bar). Movements: 1. On average, about eight thousand (mostly light) earthquakes occur worldwide each day. Composer Jan de Haan has always been fascinated by this natural phenomenon. Earthquake portrays the beautiful South-American peninsula, Isla Iberi which lies directly on a major fault line. The peace and tranquility is shattered by a major tremor and the terrified people flee in fear. In addition to showing the earthquakes destructive power, Earthquake also conveys the courage and faith of the industrious people of Isla Iberia, as they energetically start the reconstruction of their beloved residential area. Earthquake is dedicated to the memory of all victims of the devastating Asiantsunami which occurred on 26 December 2004.

Let There Be Peace on Earth has long been a favorite of church, community and school choirs across this country. From the first few measures of the introduction, a tone of reverence and dignity is heard. The arrangement gradually builds in strength arid intensity, sensitively supporting the beauty of the text. A half-step modulation in the second verse moves to the climactic ending, which echoes the phrase, Let there be peace! This is truly a song for our time.

With imaginative text painting, Thomas Keesecker's anthem on this familiar chorale brings the text and tune to life. Along with a dramatic musical depiction of the word coming down to earth in the organ accompaniment, the sensitive choral language highlights the text beautifully. The assembly is invited to join on the final stanza, which includes the standard harmony with a soprano descant.

This composition was based on the world-famous novel by the French author Jules Verne. This novel describes the attempt to reach the centre of the earth. The descent into the crater of the volcano called Snaeffels, situated in Iceland, marks the beginning of this voyage to the sublunary world. Dedicated to the memory of my mother, Ruthann Richwine Ruehr, who was both an environmentalist and a film maker, this piece channels the things she loved: the beauty of the natural world and the glorious sound of great film music. Although a complex comment on our relationship to the natural world, it begins with a simple tenet: that to preserve the earth we must first love and appreciate it.
