Scarlet Letters was composed in 1984 on commission of the pianist and harpsichordist Franzpeter Goebels (1920-1988) on the occasion of the 300th birth day of Domenico Scarlatti. The original working title 'Lettere scarlattine' is a concealed homage to the Italian composer. The compositional material is limited to the tones D, E, C, Es (= S, spoken 'Es' = E flat in German notation) and A, derived from the musical letters of Domenico Scarlatti's name, and the tones B (= B flat in German nota tion) and H (= B natural), the initials of my name. With 7 tones and 7 parts, this music is a sort of story about my imaginary encounter with the composer Domenico Scarlatti who was then one of my favourite composers. Sometimes I also used compositional means which I discovered in the sonatas of Scarlatti, such as quick 6/8 figures, afterbeat octaves and repetitions of short motifs. I tried to translatethe clarity, brightness and cheerfulness, the astounding modulations and the pianistic brilliance of his music into my compositional language.Barbara HellerThe piece was recorded on CD by the American pianist Deborah Richards (WERGO 6610-02). First performance: 31. October 1987 International Festival of Women Composers, Unna; Rosario Marciano, piano.

Shukshyn Miracle Play - Choral Symphony. Throughout the piece one finds the image of an endless road - as a river of life - travelled by generation to generation. The tenor solo and narrator are pivotal in this dark story-telling second movement while the chorus repeatedly responds with tolling bells and ticking clocks.

Rienzi remains one of the most popular works from the ?master of romantic opera?, Richard Wagner. The Friedensmarsch from the fourth act (scene 2) of Rienzi is subdued and solemn in character: in the sounds of this march, Rienzi strides to a stately church service. This is sure to be a very popular addition to any performance and is one not to be missed.

The title Par-feshani-ye 'Eshq translates, in English, to The Fluttering Wings Of Love and was taken from a text by the 18th century Sufi poet Bidel . Each brief movement takes a couplet from the poem as inspiration, drawing on an extraordinary array of images of clay pots on waterwheels, a nightingale’s fluttering wings, weighty fetters links and the world’s garden roses. The work is dedicated to friends Renée Reznek and Bruce Wannell. Bruce introduced Harrison to the poetry of Bidel and Renée had the privilege of performing the piece on its premiere performance. Australian born freelance composer and performer Sadie Harrison ’s unique fusion of elements from indigenousLithuanian music and poetry with her own modernist, often abrasive, style have led her to be compared with Bartok, but with her own warmth and grandeur. Since 2012 Harrison has been working alongside a long list of well accomplished musicians; Paul Carey, Peter Sheppard Skaerved, Sergej Okrushko, Alex South, Duncan Honeybourne are among many who have had the privilege work with Harrison so far. Performances of Harrison 's works have been given across the world by Lontano, London Chamber Symphony, Music Projects/ London, Ixion, Okeanos, Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Kokoro and the St. Christopherus Chamber Orchestra, and many others.

To strive for the highest in art - these are the words with which Franz Schubert announced his A flat major Mass in 1828.

To strive for the highest in art - these are the words with which Franz Schubert announced his A flat major Mass in 1828, a work which he designated as Missa solemnis in his autograph. Alone the genesis of the work shows the importance which the composer placed on this work. Schubert wrote the score between 1819 and 1822, an unusually long period of time for him. He later fundamentally revised the mass when he applied for the post of Vice Court Kapellmeister in Vienna, which he did not obtain. After this disappointment, he rejected his original intent of dedicating the mass to the Emperor or Empress. Thanks to Peter Jost's Breitkopf Urtext edition, Schubert's Missa solemnis once again adds its luster to the publisher's catalogue: Breitkopf & Hartel published its final version in the Schubert Gesamtausgabe in 1887. Teachers again and again ask for easy-to-play double bass music suitable for lessons or the competition 'Jugend musiziert'. The composer Peter Wittrich from Munich has undertaken this task and composed a varied cycle of seven easy pieces for double bass and piano. All pieces have been tried and tested in double bass lessons and are well positioned on the instrument. Some can even be played in the first position. The collection covers various styles, including blues, tango and classical. The piano part is more demanding so that the demands made on the ensemble playing are somewhat higher. An interesting addition to the repertoire for lessons and concerts. Contents: Giovannino discovers the Blues • Gostly Cadenza • Walking Bass with Johann Sebastian Bach • Salute to Vienna with a kiss on the hand for Elise • Danse grotesque • Drei Chinesen mit dem Kontrabass (Theme and Variations) • Basso doble.

Ida Moberg (1859-1947) was the first widely educated female Finnish composer. Born in Helsinki she grew up in a musical family and studied singing and piano at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Later the studies continued: composing and singing at the Helsinki Orchestra School, composing at the Royal Musical Academy in Dresden, improvisation in Berlin and pedagogue in Hellerau. Stillhet (Swedish for Silence), a short cradle song for string orchestra is extracted from her unfinished opera Asiens ljus (The Light of Asia), based on a text by Viktor Rydberg about Buddhism. Stillhet is also suitable for pupil orchestra (duration c. 2,5 minutes).

In his Christmas cantata Allein Gott in der Hoh sei Ehr (To God, on high alone be praise), Telemann celebrates the birth of Jesus as a symbol of the reconciliation with God and as a message of salvation for a sinful humanity. The cantata makes provision for a competent baritone soloist who sings two challenging arias, as well as a four-part choir which provides the framework for the composition with two unadorned chorale verses and, as a climax, intones the Christmas paean from Luke 2:14 Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe (Praise to God in his high heaven). In the first aria, the muted sounds of the optional high trumpet accompany the words O Freudengetone, wie lieblich, wie schone (O music of blessing! How lovely, how pleasing), evoking a gentle Christmas luster. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3911900.
