Holst's masterful military band orchestration of J.S. Bach's Organ Fugue in G Major BWV 577. Michael Brand's new edition expands/doubles some of Holst's original parts to make the piece playable by today's modern concert band. When Holst was commissioned to write 'Hammersmith' for the BBC Wireless Military Band in 1928 he felt rather out of practice in orchestrating for the medium. For some years he had had the idea of arranging some Bach fugues for brass and military band so he set himself the task of scoring the Organ Fugue in G Major BWV 577 (from Preludes, Fugues and Fantasias). He, rather than Bach, called it 'Fugue a la Gigue.' The piece made an ideal exercise and Holst's brilliant dovetailing of the counterpoint between different instruments shows his mastery. The piece is technically demanding and the characteristic unison clarinet writing suggests the orchestral conception of a large wind ensemble rather than a band. It was this conception which the composer carried forward into 'Hammersmith.' 'Fugue a la Gigue' was published for military band in 1928 by Boosey & Hawkes and shortly afterwards for orchestra, but with only short scores, as was customary at the time. This edition has the full score of Holst's original orchestration with optional added parts for full concert band.

Hardcover full score. Text in Polish, German, and English. This edition of the works of Mieczyslaw Karlowicz is based on critically examined sources. It includes all his compositions. The aim of the edition is to present the composer's original text as authentically as possible. This is not an easy task. The source materials of Karlowicz's music are very diverse in nature. Apart from most of the songs, the composer prepared for printing and published in his lifetime the following: Serenade for Strings Op. 2, Prelude and Fugue Op. 5, Concerto in A major for Violin and Orchestra Op. 8, Returning Waves Op. 9 and Eternal Songs Op. 10. Being highly experienced in writing for a symphony orchestra, and knowledgeable in the modern method of instrumentation in the neoromantic style, he prepared his scores with great care. The remaining symphonic poems were not published before the composer's death; and the 'Rebirth' Symphony, the manuscript of which miraculously survived the ravages of World War II, was issued only in 1993, as part of the present Complete Works edition. During this war the autographs of the most compositions by Karlowicz, including all his symphonic poems (except for The Sorrowful Tale), were lost. The present publication, therefore, is based as a rule on the first editions, compared with extant autographs or authorized copies of the scores. The amendments of misprints or self-evident mistakes on the part of the composer are not indicated graphically in the text but referred to in the Editorial Notes.

This publication offers a source-critical edition of Mozartâ??s fragmentary â??Requiemâ? as well as an alternative to the traditional SüÃ?mayr version. It makes it possible to perform 1) the fragment, identified in print in both the score and the parts, 2) the authentic sections left incomplete by Mozart, now in a stylistically appropriate orchestration, and 3) those sections missing entirely in the fragment, newly added in Mozartâ??s idiom taking into account historical additions by SüÃ?mayr and Eybler. When completing the fragment, the editor drew on comprehensive comparative and analytical studies of Mozartâ??s church style and compositional workmanship. The influence of Handel and Bach manifested in his final years, particularly in the â??Requiemâ? fragment, is taken into account in those sections requiring completion or fresh composition. At two points readers may choose between alternative movements (or sections), since proceeding from SüÃ?mayrâ??s historical version, two divergent options cannot be weighed against each other but each one may well reflect Mozartâ??s intentions: the â??Lacrimosaâ? may end with or without â??Amenâ? fugue, and the â??Sanctusâ? may begin in the customary D major or in D minor. Above all, this makes it possible to retain the B-flat major â??Hosannaâ? from SüÃ?mayrâ??s autograph, a movement which, until now, has not been appreciated as compositionally flawless.â?¢ Scholarly-critical edition of the â??Requiemâ? fragmentâ?¢ With performance material for presentation of1) the fragment,2) a version with completions of the authentic Mozart sections or3) a full completion consistent with Mozartâ??s musical idiomâ?¢ Missing sections were completed by drawing from other fragmentary sacred works by Mozartâ?¢ Added or completed sections incorporate influences from Bach and Handel already detectable in the fragmentâ?¢ Alternative performance options for the â??Lacrimosaâ?, â??Sanctusâ? and â??Benedictusâ?â?¢ Easy-to-play piano reductionâ?¢ Extensive foreword (Ger/Eng) on the workâ??s history, reception and modern completions, with analytical stylistic critiqueâ?¢ Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng), partly available on the Bärenreiter websiteâ?¢ Tried and tested on many occasions, e.g. at Harvard University, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Monadnock Music Festival (New Hampshire), in Salt Lake City (Utah), as well as in radio broadcasts (NDR, SWR, WDR) and CD recordings with Concerto Köln, Chorwerk Ruhr and Florian Helgath (â??Le Disque classique du jourâ? from francemusique.fr and three nominations for Opus Klassik 2021 in the categories â??Ensembleâ?, â??Choral Recordingâ? and â??Editorial Achievementâ?)You will find a detailed brochure on the new completion of Mozart's Requiem here.

Eugen d'Albert (1864-1932) enjoyed an illustrious and colourful career as both concert pianist and composer. He wished to include J.S. Bach's music in his concerts and sought the grandeur of some of the large secular organ works. The transcriptions he made for this purpose are arguably better than the numerous Bach transcriptions made by his contemporaries. D'Albert's versions of eight secular masterworks present them remarkably close to their original form, yet perfectly matched to the modern piano. At times, they make very considerable technical demands, but the effort to master them is amply rewarded. This 116-page volume marks their first appearance since they were first issued over a century ago. Many errors and inaccuracies have been remedied and English translations of his musical terms have been provided.
