This swingin' standard made Rolling Stones' 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list and has been recorded by various artists from The Flamingos and Art Garfunkel to Michael Bublé. This big-band style arrangement includes a dash of scat singing toward the end and plenty of jazzy syncopations along the way. Besides the obvious meaning of the title, a current-day twist hints at smizing over a face mask (wink, wink).

In the words of Jamaican musicologist Marjorie Whylie, Jamaican folk songs are full of social commentary, censure, and recrimination in a vehicle of humor. This publication includes three charming arrangements for a cappella singers and percussion. One describes a comical scene at a train station; a second playfully questions a neighbor about some missing food; and the third (complete with simple instructions to recreate a ringplay game) cheers a naughty cousin who threw his aunt's coat out the window. A printed guide and online video provide vetted learning tools for the Patois language. Unique, authentic, fun!

A Renaissance-era carol brought up to date in a fresh contemporary setting. Veteran Broadway music director and conductor Ben Cohn brings a modern musical theatre sound to this traditional English song. A serenely sparse piano part (during two opening alto solos) gradually grows to a full and glorious accompaniment as more voices join. Listen closely for the juxtaposed stillness/motion and minor/major that symbolize the cold of winter versus the warmth of the season. The entire piece garners edge-of-your-seat wonder, but the greatest chills will come when brief strains from four additional carols trickle in. Simply stunning.

What a surprising idea using the Pierpont melody of “Jingle Bells†to create a beautifully warm setting for winter concerts. The text describes a scene of nature sleeping and dreaming beneath a blanket of snow set to simple yet rich harmonies with a touch of “sleep in heavenly peace†near the end. Exquisite.

This composition was commissioned in 2012 by the Sacramento Choral Society, combined with the Sacramento Children’s Chorus, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the former institution. Sacramento Choral Society Music Director, Dr. Donald Kendrick, served as the conductor for the premiere of the work in December of that year. This is the second setting of this text by the composer [RBM-118]. Rather than the 4-movement structure of the previous composition, this version has been cast into one, uninterrupted movement. Although much more brief than the earlier multi-movement work, the entire liturgical Magnificat text has been utilized. In addition to the SATB materials, the work features a treble chorus (children or women’s voices) – which may be alternatively sung by selected women’s voices drawn from the mixed chorus rather than requiring a separate SSA ensemble. The piece is characterized by a neo-Baroque styling, which is suitable for Holiday programming as well as other choral-orchestral concert situations. This work is particularly effective when programmed at the beginning of a concert or concert half, given its fanfare-like opening and broad lyrical phrasing throughout.Duration: 5:00.
