Professor Gergely Ittzés invites you to an expedition exploring the instrument flute, with a focus on sounds and playing techniques beyond classical flute playing. This journey requires curiosity, playfulness, imagination, perseverance, and patience. As a reward for your efforts, you can be certain that the journey will be worthwhile, regardless of how far you wish to go. You will make new discoveries and experience previously unknown sensations and sounds. Throughout this process, you will acquire knowledge that will benefit you directly or indirectly, even if you are performing traditional tasks. The edition is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the flute, whether for instrumental practice, composition, or the intensive study of this versatile instrument and its sound worlds. Gergely Ittzés presents 42 imaginative miniature studies that lead the reader into new worlds of sound. His precise instructions and fascinating interpretation of the pieces make Ittzés' Flute Expedition an indispensable travel companion. Ittzés is deeply influenced by Hungarian music and continues the tradition of Mikrokosmos (Bartók), Fingerlarks (Veress) and Játékok (Kurtág). Ittzés is a reliable and trustworthy artist when it comes to playing and performing the most demanding flute repertoire of our time. He provides guidance and inspiration for every nuanced gesture, explicit fingering, and technical, acrobatic, and polyphonic requirement. His latest work offers a guide to modern flute playing. Additional material, including explanatory texts in English, German, and Hungarian, as well as notes on fingering notation and symbol legends, is available for download at Schott. To implement the techniques used in this Flute Expedition effectively, accompanying video material is also available through the edition. There is also an opportunity to directly contact the author and discuss ideas and experiences of using Flute Expeditions with other musicians in an online group.

The Romanian pianist and composer Violeta Dinescu was born in Bucharest on 13 July 1953. There she studied composition, piano and education at the C. Porumbescu Conservatoire and in 1977 passed her state examination with distinction. After a teaching assignment at the George Enescu Music School she moved to Germany in 1982. Since 1996 she has been professor of applied composition at the University of Oldenburg. The two pieces for solo flute appeal to the imagination of the player and require a performer with a sense of rhythmic and melodic freedom as well as with experience in using graphic notation.

In Impulso Jean Guillou regards the flute as a person who appears and asks a short, yet compelling question in front of the public. This question is followed by a statement. And when the question is asked again, it is again followed by this statement, and the whole development of this work happens through increasingly precise paraphrases to which new ideas are added which are presented like a lyrical development and like a constant amplification. All gestures, all attacks or caresses of breath and lips multiply only with the aim of lending more richness and more substance as well as more reason to this initial question and statement. With the weight given to the more eloquent deductions and developments, the discourse comes to an end, while returning, as if in conclusion, again and again to this short and final statement from the beginning. Thus, the impulse and breath of the flute is expressed - eloquent and passionate - between paraphrase, exposition and clarification.

Robert Winn's exercises for the development of articulation and tonguing shall show all flutists an interesting way to get to know and add to the character and spectrum of musical expression. This edition is centred on the technique of tonguing and a deeper knowledge of articulation with regard to conscious and unconscious movements of the tongue and diaphragm. The exercises compiled from the classical concert literature shall help to improve the player's musical imagination and help him to learn to listen closely. The coordination of the tongue and fingers as well as of sound and technique is improved, as is double and triple tonguing and other advanced articulation techniques.

The present work 'Pantomime' by Paul Hindemith, now available as a separate edition for the first time, comes from his opera 'Cardillac', performed in 1926 for the first time, a musical setting of the mysterious crime story about the goldsmith of the same name from the novella 'Das Fraulein von Scuderi' by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Act I of the opera contains a mimed scene, accompanied by two solo flutes and orchestra. The present edition contains the dialogue of the flutes, rich in gesture, and the reduced orchestra version as piano version. The expressive dialogue of the equal solo flutes is reminiscent of the characteristic music of the silent film. Our separate edition shall make the piece known among flutists and add to the contemporary flute repertoire.
