Kennebunkport Suite (2016) was written for and is dedicated to Joyce Painter Rice, First Congregational Church, Kennebunkport, Maine, and the church's 1854 E. & G. G. Hook pipe organ (Opus 177). First Congregational Church is a congregation that particularly enjoys singing the classic hymns, and this organ suite thus consists of preludes on three well-known old American hymns: Foundation (How Firm a Foundation), Bethany (Nearer, My God, To Thee), and Land of Rest (Jerusalem, My Happy Home.) (Although conceived originally for a small one-manual pipe organ with divided stops and pedals, the work can be played effectively on any organ.) Gerard Bunk worked in Dortmund and was highly esteemed as a composer and organist by such illustrious contemporaries as Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Max Reger and Albert Schweitzer. His works in the late-romantic vein fell into oblivion in the 1930s with the rise of the Baroque-oriented organ movement. Happy Birthday! ist - bewusst historisierend - in die ehrwürdige Tradition der Choralbearbeitung gestellt worden. Dabei liegt ein gewisser Reiz in dem Gegensatz, der darin besteht, dass es sich um eine verhältnismäßig junge und in modernem Sinne populäre, dazu in einschlägigem Zusammenhang funktionale Melodie weltlichen Charakters handelt, die hier in das reiche und schwere Gewand gehüllt wird. Lar in Roman mythology refers to the so-called Lares, gods of households, fields and pathways, deified souls of the deceased and tutelary deities, especially of the house and its inhabitants. Lar is also the fireplace in a house - and thus a place where you feel protected. Lar II is part of a cycle. Each piece focusses on a kind of movement or transition between the interior (the house) and the unknown (the outside, the adventure). Gilles Deleuze speaks of deterritorialization; it is precisely this process that is also used in music as a metaphor. For Deleuze, a melody can act as a ritornello, for example, representing the house, the acquainted. Lar II plays with ritornellos which are developed alternatingly - like breathing- with certain movements to the outside and back again. Musically, the instrument organ opens/introduces as a topos something within a space and focusses on the concept of space as the central point of a continuous musical transition. (Jose M. San Andreas Suite (2017) consists of four movements: The first movement, Carillon (in festo S. Andreae apostoli), is a carillon with an ostinato repeated pattern and an ever-changing series of harmonies. The harmonic intensity builds in the coda to hint at the rich and complex sonorities of bells. Versets on a Melody from Perigord comprises four versets on an old melody, Quel bru fai din lou chiel, which comes from the Perigord (Dordogne) region of France. The title of the third movement, Pastorale mit einem Orgelpunkt, means Pastorale with a pedal point, and the organ's lowest C sounds throughout. The low C is used as a harmonic generating source; the music above thus often explores sounds based on the harmonic series. The fourth movement, Toccata perigourdine, is an energetic toccata.
