The Concerto for organ, strings and percussion by Kay Johannsen, Kantor of the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart, is a valuable addition to the repertoire for organ and orchestra. It is a work composed to appeal to both performer and audience alike - with thrilling rhythmic sections as well as moments of great intimacy. The organ part, for a three manual instrument if possible, is shown to its best advantage in many and varied tonal colors, ranging from the most delicate solo registrations to powerful forte. The organ writing is demanding, but well within the capabilities of experienced organists. Precise registration suggestions are contained in the score. The string orchestra (minimum 4/4/3/3/1) is scored with sophistication, with solos for all instruments. The percussion is for two players - a part for timpani and one for other, readily available percussion instruments. By avoiding the use of wind and brass instruments, the work can also be performed where the tuning of the organ is not ideally suited to modern orchestral pitch.

Composer and organist, Joseph Bonnet (1884-1944) is considered one of the most major French pipe organ players. It is no surprise, therefore, that his Concert Variations for Organ are very well informed. Following his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bonnet took over as concert organist at the institution. Concert Variations for Organ was compiled in 1906, soon after his graduation. The work begins with a helpful index of the organ registrations and performance directions. Concert Variations begins with a virtuosic, cadenza-like theme in E minor. Following this, four variations are heard, all containing contrast in organ sound, tonality and exploited melody and rhythm. For all advanced, aspiring organists, Bonnet's Concert Variations is an essential addition to the repertoire.

Robert Saxton 's Passacaglia On The Name John McCabe for Organ. Commissioned by George Vass for a concert in celebration of the life and work of John McCabe CBE. First performed in Faversham Church, Kent, on 28th June 2015 by Edward Kemp-Luck. Duration: 6 mins ca. A review in the June 2016 edition of Organist's Review calls this piece a beautifully produced work that features the pleasing disorientation of false relations and is as inventive as it is impressive. A similarly glowing review in the August-October edtion of The Organ magazine calls this piece a very impressive short work indeed; brilliantly imagines and written for the instrument...one can only urge thismusic on all recital organists - it is a splendid piece, and would surely make a counterpart to an original McCabe organ work in the same programme - the Johannes-Partita , especially.

The Faber Early Organ Series is among the most comprehensive anthologies of early organ music ever published. In 18 volumes it spans two centuries and six geographical regions, presenting a broad and balanced view of the main forms, styles and composers. Within each geographical region the pieces, most of which are for manuals only, are arranged by date of composition or publication. The presentation is both scholarly and practical; all of the music has been newly edited from the earliest surviving sources according to a systematic editorial method that preserves as many features of the original notation as possible while making it fully accessible to modern players. In every volume, an informative Introduction sets the music in historical context. There are also helpful sections on Ornamentation and Registration, and a Critical Commentary giving detailed information on the sources.

Concerto in One Movement for Organ and Chamber Orchestra (“Alaska”) was written for Madeline Schatz and the Arctic Chammber Orchestra. In one movement, the moods and tempos shift from a broad sustained beginning to a lively and rhythmic section, followed by a quiet, slower middle section. A brief organ cadenza introduces an extended, again lively and rhythmic final section. Although the organ is prevalent almost throughout, there are also important statements and colorations in the orchestra. One may recognize a few borrowed musical references: a rhythmic patter of the Inuit; the first phrase of the “Passion Chorale” from the 16th century composer Hans Leo Hassler; and the traditional Hebrew melody, “Yigdal.”.

Kennebunkport Suite (2016) was written for and is dedicated to Joyce Painter Rice, First Congregational Church, Kennebunkport, Maine, and the church's 1854 E. & G. G. Hook pipe organ (Opus 177). Flor Peeters, born in Belgium in 1903, is one of the most important organists and organ composers of the 20th century. Until his death in 1986, Peeters gave concerts all around the world, held numerous master classes and received several awards and prizes for his achievements as a composer, organist and teacher. In his successful three-volume educational work 'Ars Organi', Peeters combines theoretical knowledge and practical exercises on all aspects of organ playing, starting with basic information on the instrument, manual and pedal exercises, and two-part manual and pedal playing. While Vol. 2 contains exercises on three-part playing, Vol. 3 contains exercises on four and five-part playing as well as studies on demanding trio playing. Hermann Schroeder's abundant oeuvre in the field of chorale-bound organ music is much less known among organists than his free - especially the concertante - organ works, although Hermann Schroeder as an organist felt particularly bound to liturgy and liturgical singing. And according to him, any liturgical organ music should always bear a direct relation to singing. The purpose of the present anthology is to provide the player a representative selection of Schroeder's chorale arrangements. Most of these chorales are relatively short and of medium difficulty at most. The chorale melody can be heard well most of the time so that the pieces are ideal for being used in church services. In the alphabetical index, the beginnings of song titles are accompanied by the corresponding number from Gotteslob (GL) or the Protestant Hymnal for better orientation.

Josef Gabriel Rheinberger dedicated his 9th Organ Sonata (composed in May 1885) to Alexandre Guilmant, the indefatigable concertizing virtuoso who had already given the first Paris performance of Rheinberger's 1st Organ Concerto (in F major, op. 137). With opulent harmonies, conspicuously frequent tempo changes, and chords which are a true delight when played on a Cavaille-Coll organ, the rhapsodic Fantasie at the beginning of the 3rd movement certainly lives up to its name. The Prelude in G major by Nikolaus Bruhns arranged by Rheinberger in 1882 specifically “for concert performance†shows Rheinberger as an editor skilled at “recreating†older works. He added individual voices or chords to the original composition, and occasionally restructured the part-writing – an interesting version for performing on a late 19th-century organ.Separate edition from Supplementary Volume 3 of the Rheinberger Complete Edition.
