2nd version: Arrangement for Soli SS and upper strings 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb) Among his compositions, Franz Lachner, the long-serving Music Director of the Court of Munich and Director of the Royal Choir, left behind a considerable number of sacred works, including two settings of the Stabat Mater. The first Stabat Mater, op. 154, from 1856 was limited to a purely vocal ensemble (CV 70.037); the second, op. 168, from 1870 included strings and organ, in which the darker timbre was achieved through the absence of the violins. In its harmonic expression the second composition is especially oriented towards the, at that time, modern style of the North German School centred around Liszt and Wagner, but without ever exceeding a moderate degree of technical difficulty in the voice parts. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4077300.

Premiered by the Eastern Virginia Brass in April 2014 at the Virginia Arts Festival, Ghosts in Grey and Blue is a deep consideration of the cost of the Civil War 150 years before. Hornist Marlene Ford confessed, Every time we went from the Fanfare movement to the Epilogue, I was tearful. I don?t know why but I felt such sadness that I am glad my notes weren?t difficult so I could just sit with the feeling. (John Campbell, Artsong Update).

Between 1717 and 1723 Johann Sebastian Bach composed Six Suites for Violoncello (BWV 1007 BWV 1012). Of these, the first three have been transcribed for bass guitar in this coursebook, which in itself is a considerable amount of work.

The Violin Concerto, written in 1928, is one of Egk's most significant instrumental works. It is indicative of the contemporary climate of innovation as reflected in the development of new genres for chamber orchestra, ensembles and soloists, as for example in Hindemith's chamber music pieces, Weill's Concerto for Violin and Woodwind, Berg's Chamber Concerto, and the Concerto and Capriccio by Stravinsky. The chamber orchestra with 16 players was considered a type of instrumentation appropriately contemporary for variety of uses and was frequently referred to in contemporary literature and discussions on Neo-classicism, Neue Sachlichkeit, functional music, music for radio, etc.

Inspired by the mascot of Falls Church High School in Virginia, this piece depicts the fierceness and speed of the jaguar. The exciting motif in the key of A minor follows the jaguar deep into the Mayan jungles, with mystical hints of the deity it was once believed to be. In ancient Mayan ruins, carvings of the jaguar are still visible today. They tell a story of the powerful cat whose eyes reflected in the night, leading the Maya people to call it the god of terrestrial fire. The music follows the jaguar on a hunt with driving rhythms in the cellos and basses, a brief violin solo, and an energetic melody that runs and leaps like the mighty jaguar, fearless and proud.
