In 1996, clarinettist Peter Jenkin, a member of the Sydney Alpha Ensemble, asked several composers in Australia to write one-minute pieces for a concert. Elena Kats-Chernin drew on melodic and harmonic material from her ensemble work ProMotion, written shortly before for the Bang-On-A-Can All-Stars. The result is a miniature slightly inspired by klezmer music, which brings many lively figures to life in just 25 bars, as the title suggests.

The Miniatures suite (1914) consists of five movements: The Evening Star, Valsette, Nocturne, The Game and The Children's March. The Legend from Suite Pastorale (1916) was also originally composed for piano.

When a composer like Enjott Schneider gets down to collecting original texts from lonely hearts columns and setting them to music in their original wording in an entirely unadorned way, irony, mockery and humour are inevitable. This can be experienced in Schneider's 10-minute four-part cycle 'Variationen uber die Liebe' for five-part mixed choir (SMezATB) and piano, a masterful musical caricature of ordinary, banal platitudes. One of the work's highlights certainly is the rousing 'Tango delle abbreviature' which consists mainly of abbreviations. The four rhythmically and harmonically highly demanding miniatures, which demand all kinds of vocal techniques from the singers, are rather destined for professional vocal ensembles.

Bakashot are piyyutim (religious poems) which are sung late at night mostly on Sabbaths and holidays. These poems have many spiritual and mystical influences, and their origin is among the Sephardic Jews before the Expulsion from Spain. The singing of the bakashot was expanded during the 16th Century, particularly by the mystics in Safed, and appears also in the singing of the the maftirim among Turkish Jews. These four miniatures for oboe solo are personal prayers written in the inspiration of the bakashot.Daniel Akiva is a composer, performer, and educator whose performances on guitar and lute have won great acclaim. Mr. Akiva graduated from the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem in 1981, where he studied classical guitar with Haim Asulin and composition with Haim Alexander. In 1987 he completed his studies at the Geneva Conservatorium in Switzerland where he studied lute with Jonathon Rubin and composition with Jean Ballisa. For many years, he headed the Music Department at the WIZO High School for the Arts in Haifa, which he founded in 1986, and served as the Artistic Director of the Guitar Gems Festival from 2006-2019. As part of his work at WIZO High School, he has developed a method for teaching free improvisation that has been incorporated into the music program at the school. Mr. Akiva has appeared in concert as a guitarist and lutist and given master classes in Israel, Europe, Russia, the United States, and Latin America. Daniel Akiva’s compositional output includes works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, choir, voice and guitar, piano, and chamber orchestra. His works have been recorded on twelve CDs, the latest of which, Malchut, was issued by OR-TAV in 2014. A native of Haifa whose family has lived in Israel for over five hundred years, he was steeped in the Sephardic (Jewish-Spanish) tradition from his youth. Much of his compositional output has been devoted to a dialogue with the music of the Sephardic Jews. Daniel Akiva has also maintained a creative dialogue over many years with the poets and writers Amnon Shamash, Rivka Miriam, and Avner Peretz.

1st complete perf: Catherine Gordeladze, The Gasteig, Munich (Winners & Masters Series), 21 April 2007 Ideal for confident young pianists keen to explore cutting-edge new music, the second book of Strides by Morgan Hayes adds five more distinctively original miniatures to the three 'fugitive visions' already published in Strides Book 1. Propulsive rhythm and melody mark out turbid expressive territory in the first two pieces, while the third Stride explores 'glacial' octaves, and the fourth and fifth add new fantasy to a Bach sarabande and a chaconne. Specific technical challenges in each piece test the reflex and stamina of players of Grade 6 standard and above, who will also enjoy the impressive virtuoso impact Strides deliver in performance.

Sonnets is a collection of miniatures for cello and piano. To me, these micro-pieces are sonnets not in the rigorously formalized Elizabethan or Petrarchan senses of the word. Rather, they grow from the term's older, freer roots in the Italian word sonetto, meaning little song or little sound. Each of my five little songs takes as its title and point of inspiration a fragment from a Shakespeare sonnet.- Andrew Norman.

The melodies from George Gershwin's (1898-1937) musicals, from 'Porgy and Bess', from orchestral pieces like 'Rhapsody in Blue' or 'An American in Paris', we all know them! But the career of the young musician started as a pianist in a music publishing house where he was to encourage customers to buy music by playing it. Soon he began to compose music himself and caught the attention of the Broadway, which paved the way to his international career. Inspired by Frederic Chopin's 24 Preludes, he began to write his own 'Preludes' for the piano in the mid-1920s: Of the five preludes composed by him, he used two for the violin composition 'Short Story' and presented the other three at a concert on 4 December 1926. These 'Preludes' combine classical moments and jazz elements into an effective whole and can be played individually or as a little jazz sonata (fast - slow - fast). Thanks to the present arrangement, the charming miniatures are now available in a version for solo instrument and piano accompaniment.

These miniatures are aimed at young advanced piano lovers - not only with regard to playing technique, but also to their handling ofmodern harmonies and tonal gestures. An important point of reference for ear and hands clearly is Claude Debussy's piano oeuvre, particularly his Preludes, Etudes and Childrens Corner. Debussy and York Holler's composition even share a modern musical poetry which does not require an extramusical programme. The five pieces are suitable for being performed separately or as many-faceted cycle.

This volume contains contrasting works by Federico Ruiz spanning quite a large and rich period of his compositional output that goes from his early Micro-Suite (1971), to lilting, sweet and rhythmic Venezuelan waltzes passing by the mysterious, intimate, and intense Nocturno (1994) plus pieces originally composed for film, and theatre. Real eclecticism in styles, moods and atmospheres that show Ruizâ??s talents and scope. The Nocturno is a deep, intriguing, substantial piece presenting a satisfying length which moves from different paths of the mind and the heart written in an abstract, chromatic idiom, that does not dissociate itself from the Venezuelan waltz and the joropo. One could perhaps say that there is a deconstruction of the latter. For the interpretation, the composer has suggested to me that it is allowed to have some flexibility in the tempo. Ruiz kindly dedicated it to me, and I have had the pleasure of performing it in many concerts.Although all highly expressive, the Three Venezuelan Waltzes present in this collection as well as the piece titled Aliseo, are works that are close to the colourful Venezuelan folk tradition. Federico Ruiz had given me two of them when we first met: â??Tu Presenciaâ?? (1981) and â??EloÃsaâ?? (1989) and then I attended a performance of the play â??Office Number Oneâ?? by Miguel Otero Silva with a fantastic actor, Elba Escobar in the role of Carmen Rosa and, I just fell in love and was very moved by the incidental music that I later discovered, by reading the programme, had been written by Federico Ruiz. Later that evening, I called him and asked to please make a piano score of the composition, so I could have the desired piece in my hands. That is how â??Carmen Rosaâ? waltz (1987) came to exist in a piano version.â??Eloisaâ?? is another Venezuelan waltz with more jazzy harmonies where precision in the rhythm and elegant playing is also essential, as it is in most of his pieces.â??Tu Presenciaâ?? was dedicated to his mother, Margarita. It is written with the structure of the Venezuelan waltz, which consists of a nostalgic subject that leads to a faster, happier middle section where the typical graceful rhythm is given by the left-hand accompaniment figure of a dotted crotchet followed by a quaver and a crotchet. The craft and magic found in the five movements of the Micro-Suite is based on a dodecaphonic row by Ernst Krenek. They remind us of the idiom of the Second Viennese School. These real miniatures seem to tell short stories. The â??Preludioâ?? is full of humour. I imagine dancing figures given by the jumps all over the keyboard and extreme dynamics; the phrases give the impression of a conversation with many questions and answers. The â??Invenciónâ?? is a kaleidoscopic piece where the hands mirror each other. The â??Passacagliaâ?? is the longest movement, at just over a minute where the prime motif is repeated three times on the bass line. For its construction Federico Ruiz uses as well the retrograde and the retrograde inversion of the twelve-tone series. It must be played expressively with dynamic contrasts between pianissimo and louder events. The â??Scherzoâ?? has repetitive motifs of a minor third in both hands and the â??Finalâ?? displays virtuosic passages for the pianist.Aliseo was originally written for the film â??Aire libreâ? (1995), by Luis Armando Roche. It contains elements of diverse types of Venezuelan joropo. In the film, the character of Aliseo Carvallo is played by the composer himself who performs this piece on a harpsichord to welcome scientists Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland one day at the turn of the 1800â??s, as a sample of the new music from the South American land. It presents the refinement of the late European classical era in fusion with Venezuelan folk music.
